Abstract— We report the results of a mineralogical and O‐isotopic study of 362 chondrules disaggregated from the Bo Xian chondrite. The range of mineral compositions (Fa = 0.8–31.2%, mean = 23.5%, mode = 27–28%) are consistent with a reclassification of this meteorite from LL4 to LL3.9. Chondrule diameters range from 0.20 to 3.40 mm (mean = 0.74 mm) in the disaggregated population. A lower mean diameter (0.64 mm) calculated from thin‐section measurements partly reflects the high proportion of chondrule fragments. The chondrule size distribution, which is approximately log‐normal, is consistent with size‐sorting mechanisms. This sorting could be linked to the fragmentation of many chondrules on the parent body. However, in detail, the variation in diameter of different chondrule types and a hiatus in the size distribution at 0.6 mm indicate that there may have been complex controls perhaps partly being determined by the chondrule formation mechanism. Seven percent of the sectioned chondrules (102) contain chemically fractionated mineral assemblages: cristobalite‐bearing and Al‐rich. This significant degree of chemical heterogeneity probably resulted from both igneous and volatility controls. Oxygen‐isotopic compositions were determined on mineral separates and 16 of the sectioned chondrules. Three separate isotopic exchange events have been identified. The dominant one is a low‐temperature hydrous gas‐solid exchange event between 16O‐rich solid and 16O‐poor gas reservoirs that lay along a slope 1.0 line on three‐isotope plots. Partial equilibration with the gas by feldspar and cristobalite, which exchanged more rapidly than olivine or pyroxene, led to formation of a slope 0.77 mixing line for Bo Xian and other LL chondrites. Mineralogy is the dominant control on the extent of this exchange; no relationship between isotopic composition and chondrule texture or size was identified. The feldspar separate and cristobalite‐rich chondrules have the most 16O‐poor compositions. Subsequently, thermal metamorphism in the parent body led to partial isotopic equilibration between the different mineral phases. A third exchange event, predating the other two events, is probably shown by one of the Al‐rich chondrules. This has an 16O‐rich composition, lying below the terrestrial fractionation line. Another Al‐rich chondrule has a normal ordinary chondrite isotopic composition. It is not clear whether the isotopic fractionation recorded in some Al‐rich chondrules can be achieved by the dominant gas‐solid exchange. Instead, the precursor O to the mineral phases may have become 16O‐rich during an earlier phase of mass‐independent fractionation.  相似文献

Accretion rates were measured in fringe and basin mangrove forests in river and tidally dominated sites in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico, and a basin mangrove forest in Rookery Bay, Florida, USA. Accretion rates were determined using the radionuclides210Pb and137Cs. Consolidation-corrected accretion rates for the Rookery Bay cores, ranged from 1.4 to 1.7 mm yr?1, with an average rate of 1.6 mm yr?1. Rates at the Mexico sites ranged from 1.0 to 4.4 mm yr?1, with an average of 2.4 mm yr?1. Determination of rates in these mangrove forests was greatly affected by the consolidation corrections which decreased the apparent accretion rate by over 50% in one case. Accretion rates at basin sites compare favorably with a reported 1.4 to 1.6 mm yr?1 rate of sea-level rise, indicating little or no subsidence at inland locations. Accretion rates in fringe sites are generally greater than basin sites, indicating greater subsidence rates in these sediments over longer time intervals.  相似文献

The coarsening kinetics of exsolution lamellae have been determined for an initial composition of 0.541 CaMgSi2O6–0.459 Mg2Si2O6 (Di54.1) at 1300 °, 1200 ° and 1100 ° C. Portions of this material were annealed for varying lengths of time, and the average wavelength () was obtained from measurements made by utilizing transmission electron microscopy (TEM). All experiments were conducted within the (001) coherent spinodal for this system (McCallister and Yund, 1977), and the lamellae are coherent up to and including the largest wavelength observed, 1054 Å.At all three temperatures mentioned previously the data are consistent with the following relationship: The activation energy for the process, as determined from the respective kinetic constants (k), is 99±2 Kcal/mol. This value is similar to that found for Ca self diffusion in pseudo-wollastonite and wollastonite, and suggests the possibility that the diffusion of Ca may be controlling the rate of coarsening.A comparison of exsolution microstructures in the synthetic samples with those observed in clinopyroxenes found in kimberlites and with similar Ca/Ca + Mg indicates that the latter cooled rapidly to the effective quench temperature.  相似文献

High‐resolution seismic imaging and coring in Lago Fagnano, located along a plate boundary in Tierra del Fuego, have revealed a dated sequence of Holocene mass‐wasting events. These structures are interpreted as sediment mobilizations resulting from loading of the slope‐adjacent lake floor during mass‐flow deposition. More than 19 mass‐flow deposits have been identified, combining results from 800 km of gridded seismic profiles used to site sediment cores. Successions of up to 6‐m thick mass‐flow deposits, pond atop the basin floor and spread eastward and westward following the main axis of the eastern sub‐basin of Lago Fagnano. We developed an age model, on the basis of information from previous studies and from new AMS‐14C ages on cored sediments, which allows us to establish a well‐constrained chronologic mass‐wasting event‐catalogue covering the last ~12 000 years. Simultaneously triggered, basin‐wide lateral slope failure and the formation of multiple debris flow and postulated megaturbidite deposits are interpreted as the fingerprint of paleo‐seismic activity along the Magallanes‐Fagnano transform fault that runs along the entire lake basin. The slope failures and megaturbidites are interpreted as recording large earthquakes occurring along the transform fault since the early Holocene. The results from this study provide new data about the frequency and possible magnitude of Holocene earthquakes in Tierra del Fuego, which can be applied in the context of seismic hazard assessment in southernmost Patagonia.  相似文献

P-mode oscillations in the Sun and stars are excited stochastically by Reynolds stress and entropy fluctuations produced by convection in their outer envelopes. The excitation rate of radial oscillations of stars near the main sequence from K to F and a subgiant K IV star have been calculated from numerical simulations of their surface convection zones. P-mode excitation increases with increasing effective temperature (until envelope convection ceases in the F stars) and also increases with decreasing gravity. The frequency of the maximum excitation decreases with decreasing surface gravity.  相似文献

The coexistence of chemical potential gradients of solute species in a hydrothermal solution, and a temperature gradient imposed by a heat source may lead to complex coupled transport of matter and heat. If the geological material is permeable to solutes, thermal diffusion (Soret effect) may constitute an important transport mechanism that could redistribute ionic species in the fluid phase. An attempt is made to explain, by stability theory, the non-steady-state behaviour of the system and the temperature oscillations within a thin convective layer adjacent to the walls of the heat source.  相似文献
