Outcomes of tidal evolution for orbits with arbitrary inclination

Tides raised by a satellite on a rotating planet dissipate energy and result in an exchange of angular momentum between the orbit and the spin. A set of diagrams is constructed which shows the evolution of the angular momentum vectors. The results are applied to possible histories of the Uranus system.     

THE ELLICOTT METEORITE

Two individual specimens (total weight 15.7 kg) of a new medium octahedrite were found near Ellicott, El Paso County, Colorado. The find is only 1.2 km from the find (in 1890) of the Franceville medium octahedrite. Ellicott and Franceville are distinct meteorites, the latter exhibiting pronounced differences in shock features, kamacite band width, and Ni, Ga, Ge, and Ir contents. Ellicott is a group IA iron while Franceville is in group IIIA.     

Least squares best-fit circles (with applications to Mohr''s diagram)

Procedures are outlined for the selection of a least squares best-fit circle to data points defined by rectangular Cartesian coordinates. Equations are derived to allow fitting of circles centered on the x-axis as well as off-axis Mohr circles. These procedures are applicable to the estimation of second-order tensors such as stress and strain by means of Mohr's diagram.     

Observations of the infrared triplet of singly ionized calcium

Observations are presented of the Caii infrared triplet (8498 Å, 8542 Å, and 8662 Å) at three positions on the solar disk to make possible direct analyses of the lines and comparisons with theoretical computations. The source functions for the two strongest lines (8542 Å and 8662 Å) are equal at those heights corresponding to the wings of the lines (¦¦ > 0.4 Å) but not to those of the cores. We suggest that the apparent source function inequality in the cores is due to limb darkening caused by inhomogeneities in the chromosphere.Of the National Bureau of Standards and University of Colorado.     

PRAGMATISM vs RIGOUR: A Debate on the Resolution Of Disparate Analytical Data on Four Canadian Iron - Formation Reference Samples

The analytical data received in an inter-laboratory study of four Canadian reference samples were treated by two different methods in order to arrive at "usable values" for the concentration of each constituent. The first method ("Select Laboratories"), proposed by S. Abbey (S.A.), is based on the fact that some laboratories consistently produce better results than others. S.A. suggests an approach which permits isolation of results from such laboratories, calculation of a mean or a median of such results and use of one or the other as the concentration of a constituent. That approach involves a degree of subjectivity and S.A. attempts to demonstrate the validity of his approach by means of several tests applied to the results obtained for the four samples.
