Unlike the majority of the water in the flooded mine complex of Butte Montana, which includes the highly acidic Berkeley pit
lake, groundwater in the flooded West Camp underground mine workings has a circum-neutral pH and contains at least 8 μM aqueous
sulfide. This article examines the geochemistry and stable isotope composition of this unusual H2S-rich mine water, and also discusses problems related to the colorimetric analysis of sulfide in waters that contain FeS(aq) cluster compounds. The West Camp mine pool is maintained at a constant elevation by continuous pumping, with discharge water
that contains elevated Mn (90 μM), Fe (16 μM), and As (1.3 μM) but otherwise low metal concentrations. Dissolved inorganic
carbon in the mine water is in chemical and isotopic equilibrium with rhodochrosite in the mineralized veins. The mine water
is under-saturated with mackinawite and amorphous FeS, but is supersaturated with Cu- and Zn-sulfides. However, voltammetry
studies show that much of the dissolved sulfide and ferrous iron are present as FeS(aq) cluster molecules: as a result, the free
concentration of the West Camp water is poorly constrained. Concentrations of dissolved sulfide determined by colorimetry
were lower than gravimetric assays obtained by AgNO3 addition, implying that the FeS(aq) clusters are not completely extracted by the Methylene Blue reagent. In contrast, the clusters are quantitatively extracted
as Ag2S after addition of AgNO3. Isotopic analysis of co-existing aqueous sulfide and sulfate confirms that the sulfide was produced by sulfate-reducing
bacteria (SRB). The H2S-rich mine water is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the extraction well, but is also present in flooded mine shafts
up to 3 km away, and in samples bailed from mine shafts at depths up to 300 m below static water level. This illustrates that
SRB are well established throughout the southwestern portion of the extensive (>15 km3) Butte flooded mine complex. 相似文献

The Jurassic Ferrar dolerite sills of the McMurdo Dry Valleys,Antarctica represent the plumbing system for flood basalt eruptionsassociated with the breakup of Gondwana. Among the Ferrar sills,the 350–450 m thick cumulate-textured Basement Sill isdifferentiated into a Lower Marginal Zone (LMZ) gabbronorite,a thick Lower Zone (LZ) orthopyroxene–plagioclase orthocumulatepyroxenite, a strongly layered mela- to leuco-gabbronorite MiddleZone (MZ), a thick Upper Zone (UZ) gabbronorite with ferrogabbroicpods, and an Upper Marginal Zone (UMZ) gabbronorite. Texturesand mineral compositions in the LZ pyroxenite and MZ–UZgabbronorites are nearly identical, the main distinction beingthe greater relative proportion of plagioclase in the MZ–UZgabbronorites, and of pigeonite in the UZ. Most orthopyroxenein the LZ, MZ and UZ occurs as sub-euhedral, normally zonedprimocrysts, commonly with rounded plagioclase inclusions. Plagioclaseis usually sub-euhedral and normally zoned, but can containsodic cores interpreted to be xenocrystic. Orthopyroxene andfeldspar compositions thoughout the sill are generally fairlyuniform, and resemble the compositions of micro-phenocrystsin the chilled margins. We infer that the sill was filled bya c. 1250°C slurry of orthopyroxene + plagioclase phenocrystsor primocrysts that subsequently unmixed in response to buoyancyforces. The LZ websterite contains numerous anorthosite to gabbronoriteschlieren, veins and pipes (< 2 m diameter), which we interpretas fossil segregation channels. Textures and mineral compositionsin these felsic channels are very similar both to UZ and MZgabbronorites, and to the groundmass separating accumulatedorthopyroxene primocrysts in the LZ and MZ. We infer that plagioclase-charged,hydrous pore melt from the pyroxenite may have segregated, pooledand ascended through these conduits to feed growth of the UZgabbronorite. Detailed mapping shows that the pipes are separatedby about 15 m on average. Calculations suggest that this numberdensity of conduits could have drained the LZ cumulates of theirinterstitial melt + plagioclase in about 8 days. Sequences (eachc. 5–10 m thick) of layered leuco-gabbronorite in theMZ could represent intra-cumulate sills that formed from plagioclase-richslurries ascending in segregation channels. Fe–Ti-richpyroxenitic veins and pods (some pegmatitic) and an unusualcoarse-grained plagioclase facies occur at the contacts betweenmassive leuco-gabbronorite layers in the MZ. Discordant ferro-pegmatitepods and dykes occur throughout the UZ. We interpret these Fe-richpegmatoidal rocks as evolved residual melts expelled from thecompacting gabbronoritic cumulates of the MZ and UZ. ODP Leg 209 Site 1274 mantle peridotites are highly refractory in terms of lack of residual clinopyroxene, olivine Mg# (up
to 0.92) and spinel Cr# (∼0.5), suggesting high degree of partial melting (>20%). Detailed studies of their microstructures
show that they have extensively reacted with a pervading intergranular melt prior to cooling in the lithosphere, leading to
crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene and spinel at the expense of orthopyroxene. The least reacted harzburgites are too
rich in orthopyroxene to be simple residues of low-pressure (spinel field) partial melting. Cu-rich sulfides that precipitated
with the clinopyroxenes indicate that the intergranular melt was generated by no more than 12% melting of a MORB mantle or
by more extensive melting of a clinopyroxene-rich lithology. Rare olivine-rich lherzolitic domains, characterized by relics
of coarse clinopyroxenes intergrown with magmatic sulfides, support the second interpretation. Further, coarse and intergranular
clinopyroxenes are highly depleted in REE, Zr and Ti. A two-stage partial melting/melt–rock reaction history is proposed,
in which initial mantle underwent depletion and refertilization after an earlier high pressure (garnet field) melting event
before upwelling and remelting beneath the present-day ridge. The ultra-depleted compositions were acquired through melt re-equilibration
with residual harzburgites.

We present a geochemical and isotopic study that, consistent with observed field relations, suggest Sangmelima late Archaean
high-K granite was derived by partial melting of older Archaean TTG. The TTG formations are sodic-trondhjemitic, showing calcic
and calc-alkalic trends and are metaluminous to peraluminous. High-K granites in contrast show a potassic calc-alkaline affinity
that spans the calcic, calc-alkalic, alkali-calcic and alkalic compositions. The two rock groups (TTG and high-K granites)
on the other hand are both ferroan and magnesian. They have a similar degree of fractionation for LREE but a different one
for HREE. Nd model ages and Sr/Y ratios define Mesoarchaean and slab-mantle derived magma compositions respectively, with
Nb and Ti anomalies indicating a subduction setting for the TTG. Major and trace element in addition to Sr and Nd isotopic
compositions support field observations that indicate the derivation of the high-K granitic group from the partial melting
of the older TTG equivalent at depth. Geochemical characteristics of the high-K granitic group are therefore inherited features
from the TTG protolith and cannot be used for determining their tectonic setting. The heat budget required for TTG partial
melting is ascribed to the upwelling of the mantle marked by a doleritic event of identical age as the generated high-K granite
melts. The cause of this upwelling is related to linear delamination along mega-shear zones in an intracontinental setting. 相似文献

Damage investigation of girder bridges under the Wenchuan earthquake and corresponding seismic design recommendations 总被引:6,自引:3,他引:6
An investigation of girder bridges on National Highway 213 and the Doujiangyan-Wenchuan expressway after the Wenchuan earthquake showed that typical types of damage included: span collapses due to unseating at expansion joints; shear key failure; and damage of the expansion joint due to the slide-induced large relative displacement between the bottom of the girder and the top of the laminated-rubber bearing. This slide, however, can actually act as a form of isolation for the substructure, and as a result, the piers and foundation of most of the bridges on state route 213 suffered minor damage. The exception was the Baihua Bridge, which suffered severe damage. Corresponding seismic design recommendations are presented based on this investigation. 相似文献

In the field of civil engineering, magnetorheological fluid (MRF) damper-based semi-active control systems have received considerable attention for use in protecting structures from natural hazards such as strong earthquakes and high winds. In this paper, the MRF damper-based semi-active control system is applied to a long-span spatially extended structure and its feasibility is discussed. Meanwhile, a _trust-region method based instantaneous optimal semi-active control algorithm (TIOC) is proposed to improve the performance of the semi-active control system in a multiple damper situation. The proposed TIOC describes the control process as a bounded constraint optimization problem, in which an optimal semi- active control force vector is solved by the trust-region method in every control step to minimize the structural responses. A numerical example of a railway station roof structure installed with MRF-04K dampers is presented. First, a modified Bouc- Wen model is utilized to describe the behavior of the selected MRF-04K damper. Then, two semi-active control systems, including the well-known clipped-optimal controller and the proposed TIOC controller, are considered. Based on the characteristics of the long-span spatially extended structure, the performance of the control system is evaluated under uniform earthquake excitation and travelling-wave excitation with different apparent velocities. The simulation results indicate that the MR fluid damper-based semi-active control systems have the potential to mitigate the responses of full-scale long-span spatially extended structures under earthquake hazards. The superiority of the proposed TIOC controller is demonstrated by comparing its control effectiveness with the clipped-optimal controller for several different cases. 相似文献

The predictive deconvolution algorithm (PD), which is based on second-order statistics, assumes that the primaries and the multiples are implicitly orthogonal. However, the seismic data usually do not satisfy this assumption in practice. Since the seismic data (primaries and multiples) have a non-Gaussian distribution, in this paper we present an improved predictive deconvolution algorithm (IPD) by maximizing the non-Gaussianity of the recovered primaries. In the years 2001–2003, we accomplished the experimental phase of the project CEMES by collecting long-period magnetotelluric
data at positions of eleven permanent geomagnetic observatories situated within few hundreds kilometers along the south-west
margin of the East European Craton. Five teams were engaged in estimating independently the magnetotelluric responses by using
different data processing procedures. The conductance distributions at the depths of the upper mantle have been derived individually
beneath each observatory. By averaging the individual cross-sections, we have designed the final model of the geoelectrical
structure of the upper mantle beneath the CEMES region. The results indicate systematic trends in the deep electrical structure
of the two European tectonic plates and give evidence that the electrical structure of the upper mantle differs between the
East European Craton and the Phanerozoic plate of west Europe, with a separating transition zone that generally coincides

As a partial contribution to the International Polar Year, the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences has
installed on the Polish Polar Station, located in the region of the Hornsund Bay in southern Spitsbergen, the equipment intended

The present experimental investigation focuses on the characteristics of near bed turbulence in a fully rough, uniform open-channel
flow over a gravel-type bed. Due to bed topography small scale heterogeneity, the flow is not uniform locally in the near
bed region and a double averaging methodology is applied over a length scale much larger than the gravel size. The double-averaged
Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) budget derived in the context of the present flow over a gravel bed differs from the TKE budget
written for flow over a vegetation canopy. The non-constant shape of the roughness function measured in our gravel bed leads
to an additional bed-induced production term which is null for vertical roughness elements, such as simplified vegetation
elements.
The experimental estimation of the terms of the TKE budget reveals that the maximum turbulent activity takes place away from
the reference plane, near the roughness crests. However, within the interface sublayer the work of the bed induced velocity
fluctuations against the Reynolds stress is of the same magnitude as the main turbulence production term. Consequently, the
characteristics of the TKE budget have similarities with uniform flows over canopies and strongly differ from uniform flows
over smooth and transitionally rough flows over sedimentlike beds. 相似文献
