Genetic diversity within plant populations can influence plant community structure along environmental gradients. In wetland
habitats, salinity and soil type are factors that can vary along gradients and therefore affect plant growth. To test for
intraspecific growth variation in response to these factors, a greenhouse study was conducted using common plants that occur
in northern Gulf of Mexico brackish and salt marshes. Individual plants of Distichlis spicata, Phragmites australis, Schoenoplectus californicus, and Schoenoplectus robustus were collected from several locations along the coast in Louisiana, USA. Plant identity, based on collection location, was
used as a measure of intraspecific variability. Prepared soil mixtures were organic, silt, or clay, and salinity treatments
were 0 or 18 psu. Significant intraspecific variation in stem number, total stem height, or biomass was found in all species.
Within species, response to soil type varied, but increased salinity significantly decreased growth in all individuals. Findings
indicate that inclusion of multiple genets within species is an important consideration for marsh restoration projects that
include vegetation plantings. This strategy will facilitate establishment of plant communities that have the flexibility to
adapt to changing environmental conditions and, therefore, are capable of persisting over time. 相似文献

The molar volumes of 19 hydrous albitic liquids (1.9 to 6.1 wt% H2Ototal) were determined at one bar and 505–765 K. These volume data were derived from density measurements on hydrous glasses at
298 K, followed by measurements of the thermal expansion of each glass from 298 K to its respective glass transition temperature.
The technique exploits the fact that the volume of a glass is equal to that of the corresponding liquid at the limiting fictive
temperature (T
f′), and that T
f′ can be approximated as the temperature near the onset of the rapid increase in thermal expansion that occurs in the glass
transition interval. The volume data of this study were combined with available volume data for anhydrous, Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2 liquids to derive the partial molar volume (±1) of the H2O component in an albitic melt at ∼565 K and one bar. To extend the determination of to higher temperatures and pressures, the molar volumes of the hydrous albitic liquids determined in this study were combined
with those measured by previous authors at 1023–1223 K and 480–840 MPa, leading to the following fitted values (±1) at 1673

/dP=−3.82 (±0.36)×10−4 cm3/mol-bar. The measured molar volumes of this study and those of previous authors can be recovered with a standard deviation
of 0.5%, which is within the respective experimental errors. There is a significant difference between the values for derived in this study as a function of temperature and pressure and those obtained from an existing polynomial, primarily
caused by the previous absence of accurate density measurements on anhydrous silicate liquids. The coefficients of thermal
expansion (=4.72×10−4/K) and isothermal compressibility (

=1.66×10−5/bar) for the H2O component at 1273 K and 100 MPa, indicate that H2Ototal is the single most expansive and compressible component in silicate liquids. For example, at 1473 K and 70 MPa (conditions
of a mid-ocean ridge crustal magma chamber), the presence of just 0.4 wt% H2O will decrease the density of a basaltic liquid by more than one percent. An equivalent decrease in melt density could be
achieved by increasing the temperature by 175 degrees or the decreasing pressure by 230 MPa. Therefore, even minor quantities
of dissolved water will have a marked effect on the dynamic properties of silicate liquids in the crustal environment.

Submarine mud volcanism is an important pathway for transfer of deep-sourced fluids enriched in hydrocarbons and other elements into the ocean. Numerous mud volcanoes (MVs) have been discovered along oceanic plate margins, and integrated elemental fluxes are potentially significant for oceanic chemical budgets. Here, we present the first detailed study of the spatial variation in fluid and chemical fluxes at the Carlos Ribeiro MV in the Gulf of Cadiz. To this end, we combine analyses of the chemical composition of pore fluids with a 1-D transport-reaction model to quantify fluid fluxes, and fluxes of boron, lithium and methane, across the sediment-seawater interface. The pore fluids are significantly depleted in chloride, but enriched in lithium, boron and hydrocarbons, relative to seawater. Pore water profiles of sulphate, hydrogen sulphide and total alkalinity indicate that anaerobic oxidation of methane occurs at 34-180 cm depth below seafloor. Clay mineral dehydration, and in particular the transformation of smectite to illite, produces pore fluids that are depleted in chloride and potassium. Profiles of boron, lithium and potassium are closely related, which suggests that lithium and boron are released from the sediments during this transformation. Pore fluids are expelled into the water column by advection; fluid flow velocities are 4 cm yr−1 at the apex of the MV but they rapidly decrease to 0.4 cm yr−1 at the periphery. The associated fluxes of boron, lithium and methane vary between 7-301, 0.5-6 and 0-806 mmol m−2 yr−1, respectively. We demonstrate that fluxes of Li and B due to mud volcanism may be important on a global scale, however, release of methane into the overlying water column is suppressed by microbial methanotrophy. 相似文献

There is overwhelming evidence that many local-scale human activities (e.g. fishing) have a deleterious effect on coral reef fish assemblages. Our understanding of how broad social phenomena (e.g. socioeconomic development) affect the diversity and function of coral reef fish assemblages however, is still poor. Here, we use structural equation models to reveal how human population density, socioeconomic development, and market access affect fishing pressure and coral cover to, in turn, explain the diversity and biomass of key functional groups of reef fish assemblages within Solomon Islands. Fishing pressure is predominantly driven by both market access and local population density, and has a clear negative effect on the diversity and function of coral reef fishes. The strong positive effect of market access on fishing pressure makes clear the importance of understanding social-ecological linkages in the context of increasingly connected societies. This study highlights the need to address broad social phenomena rather than focusing on proximate threats such as fishing pressure, to ensure the continued flow of coral reef goods and services in this time of rapid global social and environmental change. 相似文献

Conventional understanding of the nitrogen cycle in marine sediments has changed in recent years with the discovery of an alternative pathway for ammonia oxidation via the reduction of manganese oxides (during anoxic nitrification). In anoxic sediments, the potential for manganese oxides to serve as oxidant for nitrification may be considerable yet previous work on manganese-rich sediments has suggested anoxic nitrification may not be significant. In this study, the potential for anoxic nitrification in a range of sediment types was investigated. Laboratory incubation of sediment from three sites on the Humber Estuary, a microbially diverse environment, showed anoxic accumulation of nitrate, nitrite and dinitrogen gas, with and without the addition of synthetic manganese oxides. Incubation experiments confirmed anoxic nitrification as microbially mediated, with heat-killed controls yielding negative results. The anoxic nitrification reaction significantly depleted ammonia concentrations, and occurred simultaneously with manganese-, iron- and sulphate reduction, and methanogenesis. Taken in conjunction with other studies, results suggest anoxic nitrification may not only be dependent on total manganese concentrations but on manganese dynamics. Anoxic nitrification may be explained as a non-steady state reaction, dependent on the recent stability of a sediment system. Physical perturbation of sediments may cause the redistribution and/or introduction of manganese oxides and promote anoxic nitrification. The significance and persistence of anoxic nitrification is likely to depend on the frequency and magnitude of sediment perturbation, which explains why the reaction varies so widely across studied sites, and why it may not occur in some manganese-rich sediment. 相似文献

The soil conservation campaigns that have been a prominent feature of Jamaican agricultural policy since the 1950s are frequently presented as having failed to ameliorate the problem of soil erosion in hillside agriculture. A case study of a small farming community in the Blue Mountains explores the development of the soil conservation practices currently employed by farmers. The use of trash barriers in carrot farming is described and the origins of this technology and its subsequent adaptation are considered. The study concludes that extension interventions and government policy have influenced the development of current soil conservation practices; practices which have their roots in indigenous techniques. Other factors such as the adaptation of trash barriers to suit local conditions and their importance in soil fertility management also play a role in their widespread use in the study area. The study demonstrates that to understand the process of technical change in farming communities, it is necessary to consider a range of factors, external and internal, technical and social, that have over time influenced farmers' decision making. 相似文献

Coastal areas are among the world's most vulnerable landscapes to impacts related to climate change, including inundation from sea-level rise (SLR), increased exposure to shoreline erosion, and greater frequency and intensity of storms. The status of research on the physical, ecological, and socio-economic effects of vulnerability to SLR and progress toward planning for its consequences varies from region to region worldwide. Here, we synthesize the results of three decades of SLR research and the development of coastal management policies in North Carolina, USA. We identify the major factors responsible for opening new policy ‘windows’ that address SLR, including how stakeholders have developed an increased understanding of the risks, the extent of public dialogue about potential response strategies, and advances in political receptivity to policy change. Research and policy progress in North Carolina continue to provide a model for other regions to help guide and evaluate the development of coastal policies. 相似文献

Despite decades of recognition and worry about diversity, our discipline remains persistently white. That is, it is dominated by white bodies and it continues to conform to norms, practices, and ideologies of whiteness. This is a loss. At best, it limits the possibilities and impact of our work as geographers. At worst, it perpetuates harmful exclusions in our discipline: its working environments, its institutions, and its knowledge production. This remains deeply concerning for many geographers, and there has been important research, commentary, and institutional activity over the years. Yet, research shows us that little meaningful progress has been made. We know that mentoring is one vital part of the journey toward change. As such, we reflect here on our experience developing a research collective built on a transformative mentoring practice. We outline the key challenges, strategies, and tentative successes of the collective in supporting women of color undergraduate, graduate, and faculty geographers, arguing that such feminist formations are a vital part of the path to intellectual racial justice in our field. The petrology of five phenocryst-poor (2–5%) andesites and dacites, all of which were erupted from different short-lived,
monogenetic vents, is compared to that of phenocryst-rich (10–25%) andesites erupted from the adjacent stratovolcano, Volcán
Tequila, in the Mexican arc. Despite differences in phenocryst abundances, these magmas have comparable phase assemblages
(plagioclase + orthopyroxene + titanomagnetite + ilmenite + apatite ± augite ± hornblende), and similarly wide variations
in phenocryst compositions, coupled to complex zoning patterns. For the phenocryst-poor lavas, equilibrium pairs of two Fe–Ti
oxides lead to a narrow range of calculated temperatures for each sample that range from 934 (±24) to 1,073 (±6)°C and oxygen
fugacities that range from +0.1 to +0.7 log units relative to the Ni–NiO buffer. Application of the plagioclase-liquid hygrometer
to each sample at these calculated temperatures leads to maximum melt water concentrations of 4.6–3.1 wt% during plagioclase
crystallization, indicating that the magmas were fluid saturated at depths ≥6.4–4.5 km. There is a wide, continuous range
in the composition of plagioclase (≤44 mol% An) and orthopyroxene (≤16% Mg#) phenocrysts in each sample, which is consistent
with a loss of dissolved water (≤2.8 wt%) from the melt phase during degassing as the magmas ascended rapidly to the surface.
Evidence is presented that shows the effect of dissolved water is to reduce the activity of MgO relative to FeO in the melt
phase, which indicates that degassing will also affect the Mg# of pyroxene phenocrysts, with higher melt water concentrations
favoring Fe-rich pyroxene. Both plagioclase and orthopyroxene commonly display diffusion-limited growth textures (e.g., skeletal
and hopper crystals, large interior melt hollows, and swallow tails), which are consistent with large undercoolings produced
by degassing-induced crystallization. Therefore, degassing is proposed as a possible cause for the phenocryst compositional
diversity documented in the phenocryst-poor andesite and dacite lavas erupted from peripheral vents, including the coexistence
of normally zoned plagioclase and reversely zoned orthopyroxene. Degassing-induced crystallization may also explain some of
the phenocryst complexity in crystal-rich andesites erupted from large stratovolcanoes, including Volcán Tequila. 相似文献
