The power-law discs are a family of infinitesimally thin, axisymmetric stellar discs of infinite extent. The rotation curve can be rising, falling or flat. The self-consistent power-law discs are scale-free, so that all physical quantities vary as a power of radius. They possess simple equilibrium distribution functions depending on the two classical integrals, energy and angular momentum. While maintaining the scale-free equilibrium force law, the power-law discs can be transformed into cut-out discs by preventing stars close to the origin (and sometimes also at large radii) from participating in any disturbance. This paper derives the homogeneous Fredholm integral equation for the in-plane normal modes in the self-consistent and the cut-out power-law discs. This is done by linearizing the collisionless Boltzmann equation to find the response density corresponding to any imposed density and potential. The normal modes — that is, the self-consistent modes of oscillation — are found by requiring the imposed density to equal the response density. In practice, this scheme is implemented in Fourier space, by decomposing both imposed and response densities in logarithmic spirals. The Fredholm integral equation then relates the transform of the imposed density to the transform of the response density. Numerical strategies to solve the integral equation and to isolate the growth rates and the pattern speeds of the normal modes are discussed. 相似文献

We propose a dynamical mechanism that can plausibly explain the origin of the broad prograde equatorial winds observed on Jupiter and Saturn, and examine the feasibility of this mechanism using two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation models. The idea is based on combining a narrow Gaussian jet peaking at the equator, which is induced by the momentum transfer from an upward propagating equatorial Kelvin-wave, and a pair of off-equatorial jets due to a meridional-vertical circulation similar to the tropical Hadley circulation on Earth. We employ for this feasibility study a 2D mechanistic mean-flow model which incorporates the influence of prescribed waves, and a 3D general circulation model, based on the generalised primitive equations of atmospheric motion. We then confirm that the dynamical models of both kinds can successfully reproduce theoretically expected flows of a reasonable magnitude, and that when two mechanisms are combined, a broad super-rotating jet is produced with off-equatorial maxima in zonal velocity for both Jupiter and Saturn, approximately in accordance with observations. 相似文献

The Solar Eclipse Corona Imaging System (SECIS) was used to record high-cadence observations of the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of 1999 August 11. During the 2 min 23.5 s of totality, 6364 images were recorded simultaneously in each of the two channels: a white light channel, and the Fe xiv (5303 Å) 'green line' channel ( T ∼2 MK) . A high-resolution microwave spectrometer has been developed by converting the Owens Valley solar interferometer to frequency-agile operation. The system uses 27 m antennas equipped with phase-locked receivers which can change their observing frequency in 25 or 50 ms. Microwave spectra between 1 and 18 GHz are obtained in a few seconds by successive observations at up to 86 discrete frequencies. At each frequency the data are equivalent to the total power from each antenna and the interferometric amplitude and phase. All data are fully calibrated with respect to cosmic sources.The instrument was motivated by the need for better microwave spectral resolution for the study of plasma parameters, non-thermal electrons and coronal magnetic field strengths in solar flares and active regions. Many difficulties inherent in analyzing cyclical successions in terms of an idealized cycle and, to a lesser extent, in terms of the modal cycle and composite sequence can be overcome by structuring data in terms of probabilities of upward transitions from one lithology to another. The matrix derived from the first version indicates the following preferred upward succession of lithologies: coal, mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, seatclay, silty and sandy rooty beds, coal. A version of the Chi-square test strongly rejects the hypothesis that the lithologies were deposited in random order. The second matrix is used as computer input forTestmark, Stochex, andMarchain programs, the last of which stimulates a realistic vertical succession.
