Several dynamic agencies control differential rotation between various regions of a rotating gravitating body such as a planet, namely advection of angular momentum (within fluid regions) and torques due not only to (a) viscous forces, (b) dynamic pressure forces and (c) gravitational forces, but also to (d) Lorentz forces (involving the flow of electric currents in electrically conducting regions), (e) magnetostatic forces (when magnetized material is present) and (f) electrostatic forces (due to the presence of electric charges). Torques due to (a), (b), (c) and (d) have already been treated in the literature, some extensively. It is of general theoretical interest to derive from first principles mathematical expressions for torques due to (e) and (f), even though they turn out to be quantitatively insignificant in the case of the Earth.  相似文献

The TAURUS-2 Fabry–Perot interferometer, mounted on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, has been used to observe the Circinus galaxy. We have mapped the intensity and velocity distribution of the ionized hydrogen in the galaxy using the Balmer series Hα spectral line.
The semiresolved core (observed with a seeing disc of 30 pc) appears amorphous in shape, which is commonly observed in Seyfert 2 galaxies. Its peak coincides with the core position measured in the radio continuum, suggesting that ionized gas surrounds a non-thermal source.
A circumnuclear ring or spiral of radius 220 pc and a rotational velocity of 350 km s−1 (assuming circular motions) surrounds the core. The inclination angle of this feature, i =40°±10°, is less than that of the previously observed radio continuum disc. The velocity channel maps obtained for the Hα ring show that the kinematics resemble those of a rotating ring and the intensity displays a complex structure indicative of several, unresolved, H II regions. We believe the ring to represent a circumnuclear starburst.
Our Hα data also show the presence of the previously detected [O III ] ionization cone to the north-west of the core, measuring more than 400 pc in length. We suggest that the ionization cone lies in a different plane from that of the starburst ring and is directed away from us. Several kinematic components of the core are derived and we calculate an outflow velocity in excess of 150–200 km s−1 for gas above the core of Circinus. We also present evidence for inflowing ionized gas at the centre of Circinus.
The correlation of the Hα and radio continuum features is discussed, as well as the possible presence of a starburst-driven superwind in the Circinus galaxy.  相似文献

The Upper Cretaceous part of the Great Valley Sequence provides a unique opportunity to study deep-marine sedimentation within an arc-trench gap. Facies analysis delineates submarine fan facies similar to those described from other ancient basins. Fan models and facies of Mutti and Ricci-Lucchi allow reconstruction of the following depositional environments: basin plain, outer fan, midfan, inner fan, and slope. Basin plain deposits are characterized by hemipelagic mudstone with randomly interbedded thin sandstone beds exhibiting distal turbidite characteristics. Outer fan deposits are characterized by regularly interbedded sandstone and mudstone, and commonly exhibit thickening-upward (negative) cycles that constitute depositional lobes. The sandstone occurs as proximal to distal turbidites without channeling. Midfan deposits are characterized by the predominance of coarse-grained, thick, channelized sandstone beds that commonly are amalgamated. Thinning-upward (positive) cycles and braided channelization also are common. Inner fan deposits are characterized by major channel-fill complexes (conglomerate, pebbly sandstone, and pebbly mudstone) enclosed in mudstone and siltstone. Positive cycles occur within these channel-fill complexes. Much of the fine-grained material consists of levee (overbank) deposits that are characterized by rhythmically interbedded thin mudstone and irregular sandstone beds with climbing and starved ripples. Slope deposits are characterized by mudstone with little interbedded sandstone; slumping and contortion of bedding is common. Progressions of fan facies associations can be described as retrogradational and progradational suites that correspond, respectively, to onlapping and offlapping relations in the basin. The paleoenvironments, fan facies associations, and tectonic setting of the Late Cretaceous fore-arc basin are similar to those of modern arc—trench systems.  相似文献

Infrared (IR) absorption spectra are presented for olivine (α) and spinel (γ) phases of A2SiO4 (A=Fe, Ni, Co) and Mg2GeO4. IR spectra of β phase (“modified spinel”) Co2SiO4 and of α Mg2SiO4 are also included. These results provide reference spectra for the identification of olivine high-pressure polymorphs. Isostructural and isochemical correlations are used to support a general interpretation of the spectra and to predict the spectrum of γ Mg2SiO4. A γ Mg2GeO4 sample equilibrated at 1,000° C shows evidence of partial inversion, but one equilibrated at 730° C does not. This suggests that partial inversion could occur in silicate spinels at elevated temperatures and pressures, however no evidence of inversion is seen in the ir spectra of the silicates in this study.  相似文献

Fourteen whole-rock samples from three traverses through the contact aureole of the Stillwater Complex were analyzed for Rb, Sr and87Sr/86Sr. Twelve of these samples yielded an age of 2750 ± 45m.y.; (87Sr/86Sr)0 = 0.705 ± 0.003 (2σ). In addition one whole rock and a biotite separate derived from it gave an age of 2544 m.y.; (87Sr/86Sr)0 = 0.714. These data support a minimum age of 2750 m.y. for the intrusion of the complex.  相似文献

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is one of the new techniques which will probably dominate geodesy and geophysics in the near future. Its main advantage lies in the fact that it brings the accuracy of direction measurements to a level previously possible only for range measurements. This closes the gap between powerful range determination techniques such as laser ranging and the much less accurate determination of directions through photographic tracking of artificial earth satellites. The technique is geometric in the sense that the relevant observations are independent of the gravity field of the earth. However, the “orbits” of the observed extragalactic radio sources with respect to an earth-fixed system are dominated and perturbed by the rotation of the earth with respect to inertial frame. This allows the determination of polar motion, precession-nutation and length-of-the-day variations, and the technique becomes also “dynamic” in this respect. The capability of determining the geometry of a network of stations within a short time interval and with a centimeter level accuracy also allows the study of the variation of network geometry with time caused by earth tides and other periodic or secular station drifts. The main objective of the present work is the exploration of the capabilities of VLBI for the recovery of earth rotation and network geometry parameters. For this purpose, a number of characteristic experimental designs based on present and candidate for the near future station locations is chosen. The results from the analysis of simulated observations for each particular design are presented in the paper. The spaceborne laser ranging (or lasering) system provides a method of precise positioning of a large number of points on the earth's surface in a short period of time. That is, a measure of the relative location of geodetic markers from a space platform can maintain horizontal and vertical control to 2 to 5 cm. At this level of control, small earth surface crustal motions should be detectable. Development of a model for the strain field can be constructed. Furthermore, the spaceborne lasering system can survey an area in a very short period of time (one to two weeks) and resurvey the area as required. System design parameters are now being established by NASA for a possible test flight aboard the Shuttle in 1982. These include design specifications of economical corner cubes for ground retroreflectors coupled with the evolution of engineering model to flight model development. If the experiment of the Shuttle proves to be successful, it is hoped to put the laser in a free flight satellite. This paper presents the results of a simulated analysis for this latter case. The system is conceived as an orbiting ranging device with a ground base grid of reflectors or transponders (spacing 10 to 30 km), which are projected to be of low cost (maintenance-free and unattended) and which will permit the saturation of a local area to obtain data useful to monitor crustal movements. The test network includes 75 stations with roughly half of them on either side of the San Andreas fault zone. Critical study comparatively evaluates various observational schemes and statistically analyzed crustal motion recovery. The study considers laser radar as the main ranging system pending final selection from many possible candidates. The satellite orbit is inclined at 110° and slightly eccentric (e=0.04) with orbital altitudes varying from 370 km to 930 km. The results indicate that the geometric mode (simultaneous ranging) with a minimum of five grid and three distant (fundamental) stations and mixed ranging to satellite and airplane seems to be most promising. The fundamental stations are distinguished from the grid station in their location and this location should be “distant” enough from the area of crustal movement so that they can be considered stationary over the time span of the motion involved.
