Abstract

We analyzed the relationship between an index of Great Lakes winter severity (winters 1950–1998) and atmospheric circulation characteristics. Classification and Regression Tree analysis methods allowed us to develop a simple characterization of warm, normal and cold winters in terms of teleconnection indices and their combinations. Results are presented in the form of decision trees. The single most important classifier for warm winters was the Polar/Eurasian index (POL). A majority of warm winters (12 out of 15) occurred when this index was substantially positive (POL > 0.23). There were no cold winters when this condition was in place. Warm winters are associated with a positive phase of the Western Pacific pattern and El Niño events in the equatorial Pacific. The association between cold winters and La Niña events was much weaker. Thus, the effect of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on severity of winters in the Great Lakes basin is not symmetric. The structure of the relationship between the index of winter severity and teleconnection indices is more complex for cold winters than for warm winters. It takes two or more indices to successfully classify cold winters. In general, warm winters are characterized by a predominantly zonal type of atmospheric circulation over the Northern Hemisphere (type W1). Within this type of circulation it is possible to distinguish two sub‐types, W2 and W3. Sub‐type W2 is characterized by a high‐pressure cell over North America, which is accompanied by enhanced cyclonic activity over the eastern North Pacific. Due to a broad southerly “anomalous” flow, surface air temperatures (SATs) are above normal almost everywhere over the continent. During the W3 sub‐type, the polar jet stream over North America, instead of forming a typical ridge‐trough pattern, is almost entirely zonal, thus effectively blocking an advection of cold Arctic air to the south. Cold winters tend to occur when the atmospheric circulation is more meridional (type C1). As with warm winters, there are two sub‐types of circulation, C2 and C3. In the case of C2, the jet stream loops southward over the western part of North America, but its northern excursion over the eastern part is suppressed. In this situation, the probability of a cold winter is higher for Lake Superior than for the lower Great Lakes. Sub‐type C3 is characterized by an amplification of the climatological ridge over the Rockies and the trough over the East Coast. The strongest negative SAT anomalies are located south of the Great Lakes basin, so that the probability of a cold winter is higher for the lower Great Lakes than for Lake Superior.  相似文献

Sediments in Lower Murray Lake, northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut Canada (81°21′ N, 69°32′ W) contain annual laminations (varves) that provide a record of sediment accumulation through the past 5000+ years. Annual mass accumulation was estimated based on measurements of varve thickness and sediment bulk density. Comparison of Lower Murray Lake mass accumulation with instrumental climate data, long-term records of climatic forcing mechanisms and other regional paleoclimate records suggests that lake sedimentation is positively correlated with regional melt season temperatures driven by radiative forcing. The temperature reconstruction suggests that recent temperatures are ~2.6°C higher than minimum temperatures observed during the Little Ice Age, maximum temperatures during the past 5200 years exceeded modern values by ~0.6°C, and that minimum temperatures observed approximately 2900 varve years BC were ~3.5°C colder than recent conditions. Recent temperatures were the warmest since the fourteenth century, but similar conditions existed intermittently during the period spanning ~4000–1000 varve years ago. A highly stable pattern of sedimentation throughout the period of record supports the use of annual mass accumulation in Lower Murray Lake as a reliable proxy indicator of local climatic conditions in the past.

Summary. The flow of the mantle near subducted lithosphere applies a force (dynamic load) to the slab which has a normal component as well as a shear component. In addition, the greater density of the slab compared to the surrounding mantle results in a downward force (negative buoyancy) which also has a component normal to the slab. Because the slab is long compared to its thickness, the stresses in the slab due to the normal components of the loads are accurately estimated from the bending moment. We have used previous estimates of the loads to compute the bending moment in the slab as a function of distance down the slab. Our results indicate that the loads applied to the slab are large compared to its strength; bending moments due to normal loads will not be transmitted over the length of the slab. Instead, the slab will deflect so that the normal loads are balanced locally.  相似文献

Annually-laminated clastic sediments preserve a high resolution proxy record of paleoclimate, provided that allochthonous sedimentation represents a response to meteorological forcing of watershed sediment transfer. Here, we demonstrate this linkage, and illustrate a calibration process using the most recent 40 years of a varve record from Lake C2 (82°50 N; 78°00 W), three years of field measurements, and meteorological data for 1951–92 from nearby AES weather station Alert. Field measurements were used to correlate proxies of the energy available for snowmelt (e.g. air temperature) and daily suspended sediment discharge (SSQ). Our calibration was extended through use of weather data from Alert. Both mean daily air temperature at Echo, and daily SSQ, were well correlated with air temperature at 600 m above Alert, as obtained from the 1200 Z (0800 LST) rawinsonde sounding. Accordingly, we used pooled 1990 and 1992 Alert 600 m data to predict the lagged daily sediment discharge into Lake C2 (adj. r 2=0.43). Daily values were summed each year in order to produce an annual series of predicted sediment transfer to the lake. The original varve chronology was based on eight sediment cores recovered from the deep basin of the lake (>80 m). Although low-frequency fluctuations of the varve and predicted SSQ series agree, slight tuning of the varve record optimizes the correlation between them. Adjustments were based on examination of weather data for specific years, reexamination of sediment core thin sections, and by aligning fluctuations in the two series which closely matched. Although the original chronology is reasonably well correlated with 600 m temperatures at Alert (for JJA mean, r=0.41, significant at 0.01), the adjusted chronology is both better correlated and contains a more precise climate signal (r=0.54 for July mean, significant at 0.01). This is the first calibrated varve record produced from Arctic lake sediments, and demonstrates that varves from Lake C2 contain a paleoclimatic record. We believe the post-facto manipulations required to produce the adjusted varve chronology are reasonable given the uncertainties inherent in varve counting, and the lack of any independent corroborating chronostratigraphic markers. This is the ninth in a series of papers published in this issue on the Taconite Inlet Lakes Project. These papers were collected by Dr R. S. Bradley.  相似文献

Previous theoretical and laboratory studies of mechanically driven fluids in general rotation relative to an inertial frame have shown that there is a special class of flows for which the (Eulerian) flow field u(r, t) relative to the rotating frame of reference is unaffected by gyroscopic (Coriolis) forces, and therefore remains the same for all values of the rotation vector Ω. (Here t denotes time and r the position of a general point R in a reference frame attached to the rotating apparatus.) Such flows occur when (a) Ω is independent of time t; (b) u(r, t) is independent of the coordinate z (say) parallel to Ω, (c) the fluid has constant density and is therefore ‘barotropic’ (i.e. no density variations on horizontal surfaces) and (d) the topology of the cross-section of the (cylindrical) container, in planes z = constant, is such that the bounding surfaces can support the concomitant field of (kinematic) pressure P1 satisfying P1 + 2 Ω × U = 0 Condition (d) is equivalent to the requirement that any fluid sources or siks within the system be multipole in character, but not monopole. In the present study the ‘baroclinic’ case is treated, where buoyancy forces due to the action of gravity (and centripetal forces) on horizontal density variations have to be taken into account. These include investigations of flows due entirely to buoyancy forces, such as thermal convection in fluids in rotating cylindrical containers of various shapes and topological characteristics subject to horizontal temperature gradients. The implications for the impressed temperature field of the mathematical requirements that the fields of kinematic pressure P1 and density (where denotes the mean density) be everywhere single-valued are guiding such investigations and facilitating the interpretation of their findings. The investigations include laboratory studies, reported elsewhere, of convection in a rotating fluid annulus with a circular cross-section blocked by a radial barrier, where it is found inter alia that advective heat transfer is virtually independent of |Ω| over a wide range of conditions. They also include (as yet unpublished) studies of thermal convection in rotating systems with topologically triply connected cross-sections which can be rendered doubly or simply connected by the insertation of suitable barriers.  相似文献

Crater morphology and size play a major role in determining whether wind-blown streaks emanating from craters or dark splotches within craters will form. Both bright and dark streaks emanate almost exclusively from bowl-shaped craters. Dark splotches are found mainly in flat-floored craters, especially those that are deep and have high rim relief. Trends of dark splotches in the northern to southern midlatitudes closely follow those of bright streaks, suggesting both were formed by similar winds. In the high southern latitudes, on the other hand, dark splotch trends closely follow those of dark streaks.Qualitative models of streak and splotch formation have been derived from these data and results of Sagan et al. (1972, 1973). Bright streaks probably form by trapping and simultaneous streaming of bright dust downwind. Dark splotched craters in regions with bright streaks usually have upwind bright patches, suggesting these features form by dumping of bright dust over crater rims with some minor redistribution of dark materials toward the downwind sides of craters. Data are consistent with dark streaks forming by erosion or nondeposition of bright material or by trapping of dark material. Dark splotches in these regions are probably mainly the result of trapping of dark sand in the downwind sides of crater floors. Craters with dark splotches and dark streaks are usually rimless and shallow. This is consistent with ponded dark sands easily washing over crater walls and extending downwind.Plots of streak length versus crater diameter suggest a complex history of streak formation for most regions.Bright streak trends and latitudinal distributions are consistent with return flow of dust to the southern hemisphere. Some dark streaks may be direct relics of passing sand and dust storms. Trends of dark streaks and splotches away from the south pole are consistent with the spreading of a debris mantle from the polar regions toward the equator.  相似文献

A computer data bank containing information on crater sizes, locations, and morphologies for all craters visible on Mariner 9 wide-angle mapping photography was used to construct a crater morphologic classification. Four general classes were constructed that can be interpreted to represent increasing degrees of crater degradation. Fresh class craters are nearly unmodified and consist of deep bowl-shaped craters and deep, flat-floored craters with terraced walls. The slightly modified class consists of deep flat-floored craters that usually have raised rims, but lack the terracing, central peaks, and hummocky floors indicative of unmodified impact crater morphology. Craters in the modified class are rimless and shallow and those in the ghost class are rimless and extremely shallow. Retention ages for fresh (i.e. unmodified) class craters on equatorial cratered terrain range from millions to billions of years, depending on the impact flux history used. If the trend is toward billions of years, then present degradation rates on Mars are low relative to earlier history and most craters in the degraded classes were probably modified in an early (>3.3 b.y.?) period.  相似文献

We identify the Balmer 9 and 11 lines of He ii at 959 Å and 942 Å in solar spectra. These lines are produced mainly by recombination following photoionization of He ii by coronal XUV radiation. From analysis of the line intensities, we confirm the theoretical model of Avrett et al. (1976), who found that an appreciable amount of He++ is present at temperatures of 1–2 × 104 K and that the anomalously strong He ii 304 line is produced primarily by collisional excitation. We also confirm the suggestion of Kohl (1977) that the photoionization-recombination process is more important in active regions than in the quiet Sun, and we find that the 304 line is produced largely by recombination in solar flares.  相似文献
