During the last earthquake that occurred in Chlef (El Asnam 1980, Algeria), a significant decrease in the shear strength has caused major damages to several civil and hydraulic structures (earth dams, embankments, bridges, slopes and buildings), especially for the saturated sandy soil of the areas near Chlef valley. This paper presents a laboratory study of drained compression triaxial tests conducted on sandy soil reinforced with horizontal layers of geotextile, in order to study the influence of geotextile layer characteristics both on shear stress–strain and on volumetric change–strain. Tests were carried out on medium and dense sand. The experimental programme includes some drained compression tests performed on reinforced sand samples, for different values of the geotextile layers number (N g), of confining pressure (\( \sigma_{\text{c}}^{\prime } \)) and relative density (D r). The test results have shown that the contribution of the geotextile at low values of the axial strain (ε 1) is negligible, for higher values of (ε 1); geotextile induces a quasi-linear increase in the deviator stress (q) and leads to an increase in the volume contractiveness within the reinforced samples. A negligible influence of geotextile layers number (N g) on the stress–strain behaviour and the volumetric change has been shown, when normalized with N g. The results indicate that the contribution of geotextile to the stress–strain mobilization increases with increasing confining pressure, while its contribution to the volume contraction decreases with the increase in the confining pressure.  相似文献

During the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake (Mw=7.4) in Turkey, coastal failures and sea inundation were observed and were particularly concentrated along the margins of Izmit Bay and Lake Sapanca, in pull-apart basins created by stepovers in the fault rupture. Geotechnical site characterization, geologic mapping, liquefaction evaluation, and slope stability analysis were carried out to identify the principal contributing factors of the coastal failures. Results from this study indicate that both liquefaction and tectonic subsidence contributed to the failures and sea inundation within the pull-apart basins. Most of the liquefaction sites were situated at the prograding nose of active delta fans, where the presence of steep slopes coupled with the loose sediments found within young active delta fan deposits resulted in liquefaction-induced slope failures and sea inundation. Liquefaction in other coastal deposits outside the actively prograding delta fans caused limited lateral spreading and only minor sea inundation. Outside the delta fans, where soils were not liquefiable, tectonic subsidence associated with normal faulting was the cause of the observed sea inundation. Generally, tectonic subsidence caused the most severe sea inundation. Based on these observations, the identification of regions susceptible to both tectonic subsidence and liquefaction are important when evaluating seismic hazards.  相似文献

This article summarizes an exploratory study carried out to investigate the significance of various geomorphic features on the formation of observed knickpoints along the upper Indus River in northern Pakistan. These features include bedrock lithology, active faults, sediment flux from tributary channels, and landslide dams which have blocked the main channel. The knickpoints and their related geomorphic parameters (channel profile, concavity, drainage area and normalized steepness index, etc.) were extracted from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Models (GDEMs) with 30 m resolution using ArcGIS, River Tools, and Matlab software. A total of 251 major and minor knickpoints were extracted from the longitudinal profile along a ~ 750 km reach upstream of Tarbela Reservoir. The identified knickpoints and their respective normalized steepness index (ksn values) were compared with bedrock lithology, mapped faults, regional landslide/rockslide inventory, and the locations of historic landslide dams. The analyses revealed that the knickpoints do not correlate with the bedrock lithology except where major unit boundaries coexist with mapped faults, especially in reaches criss-crossed by active thrust faults in the Nanga Parbat Haramosh (NPHM) region. Neither did the river’s major confluences exhibit any notable knickpoints, but the correlations between knickpoints, mapped landslides, and historic rockslide avalanche dams accounted for approximately 75% of the observed knickpoints, a surprising finding. These observations suggest that more detailed studies aided by high resolution data should be undertaken to further explore the characteristics of knickpoints triggered by tectonic uplift, local fault offset, bedrock erodibility, and landslide/rockslide dams.  相似文献

The problem of escape of planetary atmospheres is discussed taking into account the effects of planet's rotation and planet's orbital momentum. The expressions for the rates of loss of mass and angular momentum per unit area and the total rates of loss of mass and angular momentum for the whole planetary surface are obtained. These expressions are, then, applied to study the escape of the constituents of the atmospheres of Mars and Venus. Biomechanical properties and morphological characteristics of stems of eight species of submerged aquatic plants were studied to analyse (1) differences between river and lake specimens, (2) seasonal differences between winter/spring and summer/autumn specimens, and (3) change of biomechanical properties and morphological characteristics along the stems. The data show that river macrophytes display not only characteristic biomechanical traits and morphological characteristics specific to their hydraulic habitats, but also distinctive temporal changes due to seasonally varying water temperature, flow velocity, and growth phase. Furthermore, the data reveal differences between lake and river specimens that could be explained by wind exposure of the lake sampling sites and the species-specific flow requirements of the river macrophytes. Biomechanical properties and morphological characteristics varied along the stem with larger cross-sections and a higher resistance against tension and bending forces at the bottom compared to the top parts, being similar for both lake and river specimens. The acquired and analysed stem biomechanical and morphological data contribute to the plant biomechanics database to underpin a wide range of studies in aquatic ecology, river and wetland management.  相似文献

Glyphosate is globally a widely used herbicide, yet there is little information on their toxicity to marine fishes. Java medaka, a small tropical fish native to coastal areas in several Southeast Asian countries, is viewed as a suitable candidate for toxicity test and thus was used for this study. Java medaka adults were cultured in the laboratory and the fertilized eggs of the F2 generation were exposed to different concentrations of glyphosate-based herbicide (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm) until they hatched. The survival and hatching rates of the embryos, changes in the heart rate and morphological impairments were recorded. Generally, survival and hatching percentage decreased as glyphosate concentration increased. Absence of pectoral fin(s) and cornea, permanently bent tail, irregular shaped abdomen, and cell disruption in the fin, head and abdomen are among the common teratogenic effects observed. Furthermore, risk factor also increased with the increased in glyphosate concentrations.  相似文献

The k-ε turbulence model which relates the eddy viscosity to turbulent kinetic energy, k, and to the rate of its dissipation, ε, and determines the distribution of these two quantities from modeled transport equations, is employed in calculating the vertical structure of wave-induced turbulent flows in two-dimensional estuaries. The empirical constants in this model are given the standard values cited in the literature and used successfully for calculating a large variety of steady flows; they are not tuned to the oscillating flows. The free surface elevation and the eddy-viscosity distribution are also calculated as a part of the solution. First, calculations performed for oscillatory laminar flows are compared with analytic solutions to ensure the proper performance of the numerical scheme. The turbulent flow in a laboratory-estuary model with one end closed, and in the Humber Estuary is simulated with the numerical model, and the results are compared with the corresponding flume and field measurements. The influence of frequency and roughness is thereby investigated. The results indicate that the time and space variation of the velocity field and the phase lag between the surface slope and the horizontal velocity can be predicted satisfactorily in wave-induced turbulent flows.  相似文献
