Published gravity data on active volcanoes generally reflecteither the low density scoriaceous/pumiceous deposits that are localized within ring-fracture collapse depressions, such as the calderas of mature silicic volcanoes,or the high density frozen magma conduits that occur beneath basaltic shields and cones. The intensive gravity surveys reported here over three complex andesite volcanoes reveal features of both types. Their multi-component gravity fields have crater-centred positive anomalies (1–2 km diameter) surrounded by broader zones of negative gravity with similar amplitudes but greater width (5–10 km). The former are thought to reflect sub-crater magma pipes ofnormal density (ca. 2.5–2.6 Mg m−3) surrounded by pyroclastic scoria, ashes and occasional lava flows of muchlower net density (1.8–2.4 Mg m−3) which, in turn, account for the negative anomalous zones because the deeper, more consolidated and older parts of these andesite volcano edifices have more normal densities (2.3–2.6 Mg m−3).The low density materials are particularly interesting because they appear to have filled topographic depressions to depths of several hundred metres, especially where old caldera-like structures have been postulated from the steep gravity gradients over perimeter ring faults. A model is developed whereby short periods of caldera collapse, associated with intermittent, large high level magma bodies, are interspersed by normal crater-like activity with narrow sub-surface magma pipes. Dominantly pyroclastic activity from summit craters generates the materials that gradually fill earlier-formed topographic depressions. This study demonstrates the unique value of detailed gravity surveys, combined with surface geological information, for modelling and understanding the evolution of active volcano summit regions.  相似文献

The 35 × 20 km Cerro Galán resurgent caldera is the largest post-Miocene caldera so far identified in the Andes. The Cerro Galán complex developed on a late pre-Cambrian to late Palaeozoic basement of gneisses, amphibolites, mica schists and deformed phyllites and quartzites. The basement was uplifted in the early Miocene along large north-south reverse faults, producing a horst-and-graben topography. Volcanism began in the area prior to 15 Ma with the formation of several andesite to dacite composite volcanoes. The Cerro Galán complex developed along two prominent north-south regional faults about 20 km apart. Dacitic to rhyodacitic magma ascended along these faults and caused at least nine ignimbrite eruptions in the period 7-4 Ma (K-Ar determinations). These ignimbrites are named the Toconquis Ignimbrite Formation. They are characterised by the presence of basal plinian deposits, many individual flow units and proximal co-ignimbrite lag breccias. The ignimbrites also have moderate to high macroscopic pumice and lithic contents and moderate to low crystal contents. Compositionally banded pumice occurs near the top of some units. Many of the Toconquis eruptions occurred from vents along a north-south line on the western rim of the young caldera. However, two of the ignimbrites erupted from vents on the eastern margin. Lava extrusions occurred contemporaneously along these north-south lines. The total D.R.E. volume of Toconquis ignimbrite exceeds 500 km3.Following a 2-Ma dormant period a single major eruption of rhyodacitic magma formed the 1000-km3 Cerro Galán ignimbrite and the caldera. The ignimbrite (age 2.1 Ma on Rb-Sr determination) forms a 30–200-m-thick outflow sheet extending up to 100 km in all directions from the caldera rim. At least 1.4 km of welded intracaldera ignimbrite also accumulated. The ignimbrite is a pumice-poor, crystal-rich deposit which contains few lithic clasts. No basal plinian deposit has been identified and proximal lag breccias are absent. The composition of pumice clasts is a very uniform rhyodacite which has a higher SiO2 content but a lower K2O content than the Toconquis ignimbrites. Preliminary data indicate no evidence for compositional zonation in the magma chamber. The eruption is considered to have been caused by the catastrophic foundering of a cauldron block into the magma chamber.Post-caldera extrusions occurred shortly after eruption along both the northern extension of the eastern boundary fault and the western caldera margin. Resurgence also occurred, doming up the intracaldera ignimbrite and sedimentary fill to form the central mountain range. Resurgent doming was centred along the eastern fault and resulted in radial tilting of the ignimbrite and overlying lake sediments.  相似文献

A potash trachyte (containing 13% K2O) crops out within the Malvernian (Pre-cambrian) calc-alkaline igneous complex. The Bleikvassli Zn-Pb deposit is located in the Uppermost Allochthon of the northern Norwegian Caledonides and is enclosed in amphibolite facies, multiply deformed supracrustal rocks. The stratiform orebody occurs stratigraphically above a sequence of gneiss and amphibolite and below a thick carbonate unit. The orebody, spatially associated with a footwall microcline gneiss that contains as much as 12wt K2O, occurs in the lower part of the Mine Sequence which also comprises (kyanite-) mica schist and quartzo-feldspathic to siliceous rocks. The host rock lithology and the metal content of the Bleikvassli orebody are consistent with a SEDEX origin of the deposit. Field relationships and chemistry suggest that the microcline gneiss represents a potassic alteration of pelitic sediments related to the ore-forming process. A 464 ± 22 Ma Rb-Sr isochron for the microcline gneiss is interpreted to be a metamorphic age resulting from resetting of the Rb-Sr isotopic system during the Caledonian orogeny. The U-Pb in the whole rock shows evidence of recent mobilization of uranium and a partial or total resetting of the system during peak metamorphism. As with most SEDEX deposits, the lead isotope composition of the Bleikvassli ore plots close to the orogen growth curve. The geological setting of the ore and the lead — isotope compositions of the galenas indicate a Cambrian age of mineralization. However, the slope of the lead isotope data indicate an age of about 1000 Ma, which is also a maximum age of ore deposition. The lead isotope data for the galena, in conjunction with the compositions of the microcline gneiss during peak metamorphism, support a model whereby the microcline rock was formed as an alteration product by the ore forming fluid and the initial lead isotope composition of the microcline rock was similar to that of the galenas during ore deposition.  相似文献

The Hadley Centre climate model HadCM3 simulates a stable thermohaline circulation driven by deep water formation in the Norwegian and Labrador Seas without the need for flux adjustments. It has however been suggested that this result is the fortuitous consequence of the local use of the Roussenov convection scheme in this region, and that the model simulation may depend sensitively on this parameterisation. Here we investigate the sensitivity of the thermohaline circulation (THC) to the model’s treatment of the overflows from the Nordic Seas for both pre-industrial and increasing greenhouse gas forcings. We find that although the density structure in the Labrador Sea does depend upon the specifics of how the overflows are modelled, the global thermohaline circulation and climate responses are not sensitive to these details. This result gives credibility to previously published modelling studies on the response of the thermohaline circulation to anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing, and implies that research may profitably be focussed on the large scale transports, where models are known to disagree.  相似文献

The Caradoc volcanic rocks of the Lleyn Peninsula represent a major episode of rhyolite-dominated eruption (total volume up to 560 km3) within the Southern British Caledonides. New geochemical data reveal the original chemical characteristics of the basic, intermediate, and acid lavas. The basalts are interpreted as having predominantly within-plate character and are associated with intermediate lavas (trachybasalts) and high-Zr, originally peralkaline, trachytes, and rhyolites. A low-Zr, originally high-K, subalkalic group of rhyolites, and a basalt with transitional island arc tholeiite-MORB characteristics are unrelated to these lavas. The volcanic rocks are interpreted to have been erupted onto a complex, rapidly evolving, active continental margin dominated by crustal tension.  相似文献

The geological features of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks comprising the Precambrian of England and Wales suggest formation in one or more Precambrian orogenic cycles. They are now interpreted in terms of plate tectonics. Evidence for Late Proterozoic plate subduction in the Mona Complex of Anglesey is suggested by the association of pillow lavas, cherts, high P/T metamorphic rocks and by the occurrence of gabbros and serpentinites with similar features to rocks believed to comprise the oceanic crust. Precambrian rocks in England and South Wales include calc-alkaline plutonic complexes (Malvern and Johnston Complexes), calc-alkaline lavas (Uriconian and Charnian) and basic and intermediate intrusions of tholeiitic affinity (dykes in the plutonic complexes and granophyric diorites in Charnwood Forest). The features of these rocks indicate formation in a continental margin setting and this is consistent with features of the Rushton Schist and Primrose Hill “gneiss” which suggest that they predate the Late Proterozoic orogenic activity. This evidence is consistent with plate tectonic models involving oceanic plate subduction below the Mona Complex from an ocean to the northwest, or from a small ocean basin southeast of the complex. The Warren House lavas show some affinities to ocean floor basalts and are problematic with regard to the Precambrian history of the area.  相似文献

Time series measurements from an array of temperature miniloggers in a line at constant depth along the sloping boundary of a lake are used to describe the ‘internal surf zone” where internal waves interact with the sloping boundary. More small positive temperature time derivatives are recorded than negative, but there are more large negative values than positive, giving the overall distribution of temperature time derivatives a small negative skewness. This is consistent with the internal wave dynamics; fronts form during the up-slope phase of the motion, bringing cold water up the slope, and the return flow may become unstable, leading to small advecting billows and weak warm fronts. The data are analysed to detect ‘events’, periods in which the temperature derivatives exceed a set threshold. The speed and distance travelled by ‘events’ are described. The motion along the slope may be a consequence of (a) instabilities advected by the flow (b) internal waves propagating along-slope or (c) internal waves approaching the slope from oblique directions. The propagation of several of the observed ‘events’ can only be explained by (c), evidence that the internal surf zone has some, but possibly not all, the characteristics of the conventional ‘surface wave’ surf zone, with waves steepening as they approach the slope at oblique angles.  相似文献
