The sorption of yttrium and the rare earth elements (YREEs) by amorphous ferric hydroxide at low ionic strength (0.01 M ≤ I ≤ 0.09 M) was investigated over a wide range of pH (3.9 ≤ pH ≤ 7.1). YREE distribution coefficients, defined as iKFe = [MSi]T / (MT[Fe3+]S), where [MSi]T is the concentration of YREE sorbed by the precipitate, MT is the total YREE concentration in solution, and [Fe3+]S is the concentration of precipitated iron, are weakly dependent on ionic strength but strongly dependent on pH. For each YREE, the pH dependence of log iKFe is highly linear over the investigated pH range. The slopes of log iKFe versus pH regressions range between 1.43 ± 0.04 for La and 1.55 ± 0.03 for Lu. Distribution coefficients are well described by an equation of the form iKFe = (Sβ1[H+]− 1 + Sβ2[H+]− 2) / (SK1[H+] + 1), where Sβn are stability constants for YREE sorption by surface hydroxyl groups and SK1 is a ferric hydroxide surface protonation constant. Best-fit estimates of Sβn for each YREE were obtained with log SK1 = 4.76. Distribution coefficient predictions, using this two-site surface complexation model, accurately describe the log iKFe patterns obtained in the present study, as well as distribution coefficient patterns obtained in previous studies at near-neutral pH. Modeled log iKFe results were used to predict YREE sorption patterns appropriate to the open ocean by accounting for YREE solution complexation with the major inorganic YREE ligands in seawater. The predicted log iKFe′ pattern for seawater, while distinctly different from log iKFe observations in synthetic solutions at low ionic strength, is in good agreement with results for natural seawater obtained by others.  相似文献

The problems associated with the erosion of cohesive sediment in the marine environment are well recognized. However, the mechanisms of controlling erosion are not well understood. The research to be presented was directed at characterizing the erosion resistance of cohesive sediment through the application of rate process and double layer theories. Additionally, relationships between erodability and temperature, salinity, pore water content and erosional shear stress were studied.A total of 50 tests were conducted in a refrigerated water tunnel. These included tests in which temperature was incremented at constant erosional shear stress and tests within which the erosional stress was varied at constant temperature.The material tested was a remoulded illitic-silt (Grundite). Tests were performed at constant pH and at five different water contents ranging from 40 to 80%. For each water content, samples were tested at five different salinities varying from 0 to 10% NaCl.Results are as follows: (1) the erosional response of cohesive sediments can be described with rate process and double layer throries, (2) the magnitude of experimental activation energies suggest solid-to-solid bonding and are essentially independent of salinity and water content, (3) experimental flow volumes were essentially invariant with water content, but decreased with salinity in accordance with the double layer theory, which suggest that the dominant interparticle forces in surface cohesive erosion are physico-chemical rather than mechanical.  相似文献

Within public lands across the United States, “natural” environments are given boundaries, subject to regulation, and managed for various uses. However, the effective and judicious management of these socionatural spaces for the greater good of both long-term sustainability and the mutual benefit of disparate stakeholders remains a challenge. One such stakeholder group includes forest-dependent communities, specifically, harvesters and producers of nontimber forest products (NTFPs). Relying on a case study of honey producers in rural northwest Florida, this article demonstrates how competing notions of forest management create tensions between local resource users and resource managers. NTFP research engages in timely discussions of diverse economic practices, resource politics, and issues of contested land use and access within a post-industrial context.  相似文献

Megacities are extreme manifestations of urban complexity that present aid agencies with major disaster assessment challenges. Geographers can contribute to improving megacity disaster assessments by: 1) defining megacity disasters; 2) improving socioeconomic measures of disaster to allow for clearer differentiation of effects among different population sub-groups; 3) specifying criteria for identifying thresholds of disaster and trends in the status of disaster-affected populations; and 4) developing credible data collection and analysis methods appropriate for complex urban environments. Concerns about the environmental impacts of mariculture have grown in recent years in response to the rapid expansion of the industry. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is the main product of shellfish mariculture in the Northeast Atlantic and Baltic Sea, with approximately one third of the harvest cultured using suspended longlines within sheltered marine areas. The main aim of this study was to examine the interactions, and assess the impacts (if any) of mussel suspension culture on the seabird and seal community, employing a simultaneous study of culture and control sites. The study spanned a 20-month period (from November 2001 to August 2003) and encompassed six sites in Bantry Bay (Southwest Ireland).There was no significant difference in species richness between mussel and control sites. Similarly, species diversity did not significantly differ between the mussel and control sites although control sites were generally more diverse than mussel sites, the latter particularly dominated by large numbers of Laridae.Significantly higher numbers of Phalacrocoracidae, Laridae and Alcidae were recorded in mussel sites than in control sites. However, no significant difference was found between Gaviidae or common seal (Phoca vitulina) numbers in mussel and control sites. Seasonal patterns of abundance were similar in mussel and control sites, with peak numbers of most species groups occurring in spring.Mussel suspension culture does not appear to have an adverse effect on the abundance of seabirds or common seals in this area. The safe perching platforms provided by suspension culture floats, combined with a number of other factors, contribute to an increased abundance of a number of seabird species, particularly Laridae. The possible interactions between vertebrate predators and mussel suspension aquaculture are discussed and possible explanations for the increased seabird abundance observed in these areas are offered.  相似文献

The Kaipara Harbour in New Zealand is one of the largest estuarine systems in the world, containing significant areas of subtidal seagrass habitat (Zostera muelleri). Light availability at the maximum depth limit for Z. muelleri was measured at 2.10 (0.19 SEM) and 4.91 (0.53 SEM) mol photons m?2 d?1 during the winter and summer monitoring periods, respectively. The primary drivers of benthic light availability were found to be surface light availability, the timing of the low tide and water clarity. Core sampling analysis suggested that biomass of seagrass growing at the maximum depth limit was low, indicative of light limitation. The results of this study suggest that the subtidal distribution of seagrass in the Kaipara Harbour is light-limited and that reductions in water clarity due to changes in land use are likely to result in significant reductions in the extent and productivity of subtidal seagrass habitat.  相似文献
