Accurate chronologies are essential for linking palaeoclimate archives. Carbon‐14 wiggle‐match dating was used to produce an accurate chronology for part of an early Holocene peat sequence from the Borchert (The Netherlands). Following the Younger Dryas–Preboreal transition, two climatic shifts could be inferred. Around 11 400 cal. yr BP the expansion of birch (Betula) forest was interrupted by a dry continental phase with dominantly open grassland vegetation, coeval with the PBO (Preboreal Oscillation), as observed in the GRIP ice core. At 11 250 cal. yr BP a sudden shift to a humid climate occurred. This second change appears to be contemporaneous with: (i) a sharp increase of atmospheric 14C; (ii) a temporary decline of atmospheric CO2; and (iii) an increase in the GRIP 10Be flux. The close correspondence with excursions of cosmogenic nuclides points to a decline in solar activity, which may have forced the changes in climate and vegetation at around 11 250 cal. yr BP. An analytical model for the constant-head pumping test is developed for a partially penetrating well that has a finite thickness skin, and intersects a single vertical fracture. In the model, the fracture is fully confined and flow occurs only in the fracture. The model is developed using Laplace transform and finite Fourier transform methods. The model is to be used for analysing well test data from vertically fractured media and for verifying numerical models. Dimensionless curves are used to study the effects of a finite thickness skin and a partially penetrating wellbore. In the presence of a finite thickness skin, or a partially penetrating wellbore, a typical flow response for the constant-head pumping test has three distinct periods of flow corresponding to small-, intermediate- and large-time. Small- and large-time approximations are presented for the model. For tests where the wellbore is fully penetrating, or the partial penetration ratio is known, these approximations can be used to analyse field data.

I analyze a quiet-Sun magnetogram with an orthogonal wavelet transform, which allows me to define an entropy measure. The entropy measure of the magnetogram as a function of spatial scale obeys a scaling law, which leads to a fractal dimension ofD f = 1.7. Furthermore, the entropy scaling law is directly related to the intermittency of magnetic features, which increases for decreasing spatial scales, as expected for a turbulent signal. In this context, the scaling law parameter can be interpreted as a fractional reduction in volume from one step of the turbulent cascade to the next.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.

We study a model of extended radio sources (ERS), in particular, extragalactic jets and radio lobes, which are inhomogeneous and where noncompressive Alfvén and surface Alfvén waves (and not shocks and magnetosonic waves) are primarily excited. We assume that a negligible thermal population exists (i.e., the ion density at the low-energy cut-off of the power law distribution is greater than the ion density of the thermal population, if present). Due to internal instabilities and/or the interaction of the ERS with the ambient medium, surface Alfvén waves (SAW) are created. We show that even very small amplitude SAW are mode converted to kinetic Alfvén waves (KAW) which produce large moving accelerating potentials , parallel to the magnetic field. Neglecting nonlinear perturbations, and for typical physical parameters of ERS, we obtaine1 MeV. Wesuggest that these potentials are important in acceleration (e.g., injection energy) and reacceleration of electrons in ERS. We show that energy losses by synchrotron radiation can be compensated by reacceleration by KAW. The relation between KAW acceleration, and previously studied cyclotron-resonance acceleration by Alfvén waves, is discussed.

Two outbursts and a minimum phase of the dwarf nova CN Orionis have been observed spectroscopically. One outburst was covered almost completely. The outburst spectra show periodic variations of the absorption lines which are interpreted with the formation of an elliptic disc during outburst stage. During decline from outburst a narrow emission line appears in the core of the broad H absorption line. The balmer decrement in the outburst phase is much steeper than in the minimum phase. This implies that during the outburst the emission line region is located more outward in the disk. The semi amplitude of the radial velocity curve was determined to K1=152 km/s±10 km/s. Using the photometric orbital period and an assumption about the inclination angle the approximate system parameters could be derived.Based on observations colleted at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile and at Mount Stromlo Observatory, Canberra, Australia.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. R. D. Graetz 《Climatic change》1991,18(2-3):147-173
The potential feedback on global atmospheric and climate change of climate-driven changes in terrestrial vegetation is examined by systematically relating the surface exchanges of energy, mass and momentum to two dimensions of vegetation, structure and taxonomy, such that the significance of climate driven changes in these characteristics can be assessed. A detailed quantitative understanding of this feedback is an important prerequisite to realistic and dynamic representations of the Earth's surface within general circulation and biological models (GCMs and GBMs). Without realistic representations of terrestrial vegetation within these models, any forecasts of future climates by these models must be suspect.Several general conclusions are drawn. The first is that the indirect feedbacks, those associated with the clouds and aerosols of the planetary boundary layer, appear to be very powerful but as yet their behaviour and connections with the underlying surface are both poorly understood and captured within GCMs.The physical structure of vegetation, the disposition of biomass in 3-D, is the characteristic that most strongly influences the exchange of momentum (via aerodynamic roughness) and solar radiation (via albedo). Vegetation structure and species composition determine the most important of the mass exchanges, evapotranspiration. Of all of the surface exchanges, the parameterization of evapotranspiration (E ) and the simulation of the water balance over time is the most critical.Lastly, the problems of scaling and spatial heterogeneity, the sub-grid variability of the modellers, looms as a difficult, but not insoluble, problem. It remains a critical problem however, and the detailed parameterization of the various big leaf models stands in absurd contrast to the simplistic generalization of the spatial heterogeneity of terrestrial landscapes.Plant ecologists can contribute to the task of improving the representation of vegetated landscapes within GCMs. There is need to simply and unify the way in which vegetation can be grouped at landscape scales. A classification that is based on function rather than phylogeny is required. The definition of Vegetation Functional Types (VFTs) would expedite research on both the impact of, and feedback on, climate change.

Synthetic spinel harzburgite and lherzolite assemblages were equilibrated between 1040 and 1300° C and 0.3 to 2.7 GPa, under controlled oxygen fugacity (f O 2). f O 2 was buffered with conventional and open double-capsule techniques, using the Fe−FeO, WC-WO2-C, Ni−NiO, and Fe3O4−Fe2O3 buffers, and graphite, olivine, and PdAg alloys as sample containers. Experiments were carried out in a piston-cylinder apparatus under fluid-excess conditions. Within the P-T-X range of the experiments, the redox ratio Fe3+/ΣFe in spinel is a linear function of f O 2 (0.02 at IW, 0.1 at WCO, 0.25 at NNO, and 0.75 at MH). It is independent of temperature at given Δlog(f O 2), but decreases slightly with increasing Cr content in spinel. The Fe3+/ΣFe ratio falls with increasing pressure at given Δlog(f O 2), consistent with a pressure correction based on partial molar volume data. At a specific temperature, degree of melting and bulk composition, the Cr/(Cr+Al) ratio of a spinel rises with increasing f O 2. A linear least-squares fit to the experimental data gives the semi-empirical oxygen barometer in terms of divergence from the fayalite-magnetite-quartz (FMQ) buffer:

Denudation and vertical crustal movements are linked through the isostatic equation for conservation of lithospheric mass. Recent empirical results from a wide range of sources are presented on the rates of these processes. Denudation alone can cause non-tectonic (isostatic) surface uplift of the right magnitude predicted by theory. A case is made, following Ahnert, for a single linear relationship (although with much scatter) between denudation rate and mean drainage basin relief for large basins. Some recent determinations of denudational time constants have neglected to include tectonic and isostatic terms which oppose the reduction of relief by denudation. Application of diffusional transport models to determine the rate of sediment deposition are severely limited by inherent one-dimensionality and neglect of suspended and washload contributions. Basin infill sequences may be used to determine past sediment transfer coefficients from a hinterland, but problems arise in the apportionment of the various hinterland fluxes that occur in »real-world« three dimensional basins. Sediment yields in smaller half-graben and growth fold basins must reflect the magnitude of drainage basins and the complex local controls upon sediment yields. Examples are given from extensional basins in the Western USA and Greece. The »length« of tectonic relief produced in tilt blocks and growth folds will control the area of drainage basin developed (through the fractal form of Hack's Law) and hence the magnitude of deposition in sedimentary basins adjoining tectonic uplands.

In spite of the voluminous basaltic volcanism on the island of Hawaii, rhyolite is not produced. Iceland, on the other hand, exhibits common rhyolitic volcanism amounting to some 10–12% of its surface rocks. This contrast is investigated using the fundamental igneous processes exhibited by sheet-like Hawaiian lava lakes and Shonkin Sag laccolith in Montana. Highly differentiated, residual melts normally reside within inwardly advancing solidification fronts and are generally inaccessible to eruptive processes. Only when a large initial phenocryst population is present, from which a thick basal cumulate can rapidly form, is it possible to supply highly differentiated melt into the active (i.e., eruptable) portion of the magma chamber. Although there is protracted control of differentiation at Hawaii by settling of olivine, further differentiation occurs within the solidification fronts. Only by repeated transport and holding is it possible to differentiate beyond the critical composition of the leading edge of the solidification front ( 7% MgO and 51.5% SiO2). Crystal size distributions (CSDs) for Hawaii and Shonkin Sag are used to demonstrate the inferred physical and chemical processes of solidification, including the kinetics of crystallization.A ubiquitous feature of these basaltic bodies is the formation of coarse veins and segregations of refined melt and granophyres within the upper solidification front. It is this fundamental bimodal feature which is the key to understanding Icelandic silicic volcanism.Rhyolites in Iceland occur mainly as a bimodal population with basalts associated with central volcanoes. Rhyolites, granophyres, and felsites are common, with the intrusions often being layered. Ash flows and true granite-like intrusions are rare. The voluminous silicic lavas at Torfajokull central volcano contain disequilibrium phenocryst assemblages. This, and the disagreement in oxygen isotopic values between rhyolites and basalts, reflects extensive partial melting of the heterogeneous basaltic crust of Iceland to produce these rhyolites. Relatively small, chemically distinct, and spatially intimate silicic bodies are formed by concentrating granophyric segregations from earlier cycles of solidification. This process is also reflected in the layered granophyric instrusion of Slaufrudalur in eastern Iceland. Slaufrudalur is an unvented subterranean caldera, equivalent in igneous processes and style to the subaerial Torfajokull caldera.Hawaii is dominated by fractional crystallization due to crystal settling and does not produce rhyolite. Iceland's tectonics allow continual and extensive reprocessing of thin, hot basaltic crust which produces rhyolite by concentrating original silicic segregations and veins and by partially melting intermediate extrusives, which have subsided deep into the crust.
