Electron impact excitation rates for Fexxi, calculated with theR-matrix code, are used to determine theoretical electron density sensitive emission line ratios involving transitions in the 121–146 wavelength range. The observed ratios for a solar flare, obtained with a grazing spectrometer on board the OSO-5 satellite, imply electron densities which are consistent, with discrepancies that do not exceed 0.3 dex. In addition, the derived values ofN e are similar to those estimated for the high temperature regions of other solar flares. This provides experimental support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the line ratio calculations.  相似文献

Two hypotheses have previously been proposed for the source of elevated radon in ground water of southwestern Ohio: (1) penecontemporaneous uranium at the Silurian-Ordovician unconformity, and/or (2) parent radionuclides transported from fragments of uranium-rich Ohio Shale within the glacial drift above the aquifer. To further test the first hypothesis, vertical profiles of dissolved radon in ground water and uranium in rock cores were obtained at two locations immediately underlain by the Silurian/Ordovician unconformity. Radon concentrations exceeding 1000 pCi/l occurred in zones where the bedrock had uranium concentrations greater than 1.5 ppm. Radon concentrations of less than 500 pCi/l occurred in zones where the rock had uranium concentrations below 0.25 ppm. A log-linear regression model between uranium and radon had a correlation coefficient of 0.82. Three aspects of the results support the hypothesis that the source is transported, although not necessarily from fragments of Ohio Shale. First, the high uranium-radon zones did not occur consistently or exclusively at the Silurian/Ordovician unconformity. Second, the high uranium-radon zones are correlated to fracture zones having a higher hydraulic conductivity and thus appear to be related to the zones of greater flow and transport. Third, the amount of uranium-radon disequilibrium increases exponentially with increasing hydraulic conductivity. The hypothesis of a penecontemporaneous source, not supported by our study, arose when previous investigators conducted regional surveys of domestic wells and springs and found a correspondence between elevated radon and the location of the Silurian-Ordovician unconformity. The observations of the previous investigators can be explained by the fact that the basal Silurian is in some places a horizon of higher hydraulic conductivity that facilitates transport. The two most probable external sources of uranium would be uranium-containing detritus in the glacial drift or uranium-containing phosphate fertilizers spread on the surface. Given that the uranium was transported into the aquifer during the Holocene, it could not have generated enough radium in the time elapsed since entering the aquifer to produce the radon levels that were measured. This observation indicates that radium was cotransported with uranium into the zones of high radon.  相似文献

Oxygen-isotope compositions have been measured for whole-rock and mineral samples of host and hydrothermally altered rocks from three massive sulfide deposits, Centennial (CL), Spruce Point (SP), and Anderson Lake (AL), in the Flin Flon — Snow Lake belt, Manitoba. Wholerock 18O values of felsic metavolcanic, host rocks (+8.5 to +16.1) are higher than those of altered rocks from the three deposits. The 18O values of altered rocks are lower in the chlorite zone and muscovite zone-I (CL=+ 5.3; SP=+5.4 to +8.3; AL= +3.7 to +5.9) than in the gradational zone (CL= +9.9 to +11.7; SP= +8.4 to +9.8; AL= + 6.6 to +7.7). Muscovite schist (Muscovite Zone-II) enveloping the Anderson Lake ore body has 18O values of +7.2 to +8.3. Quartz, biotite, muscovite, and chlorite separated from the altered rocks have lower 18O values compared to the same minerals separated from the host rocks. However, isotopic fractionation between mineral-pairs is generally similar in both host and altered rocks.It is interpreted that differences in the oxygen-isotope compositions of the altered and host rocks were produced prior to metamorphism, during hydrothermal alteration related to ore-deposition. Isotopic homogenization during metamorphism occurred on a grain-to-grain scale, over no more than a few meters. The whole-rock 18O values did not change significantly during metamorphism. The generally lower 18O values of altered rocks, the Cu-rich nature of the ore and the occurrence of the muscovite zone-II at Anderson Lake are consistent with the presence of higher temperature hydrothermal fluids at Anderson Lake than at the Centennial and Spruce Point deposits.  相似文献

Shear echoes with various types of structures like surface layer with smooth top, short spiky top, tall spiky top and stratified layers have been seen on the monostatic system operating at the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. In this paper effects of surface wind speed on the formation of these structures have been considered. The data used for the purpose pertains to the period May 1977 to April 1982. It has been seen that most of the shear echo structures are formed under stable conditions with surface wind speed less than or equal to 2.5 m s−1, however, the tall spiky surface based layer structures of height more than 150 m have been seen to occur significantly in the presence of higher surface wind speeds, suggesting that strong surface winds may be responsible for turbulence in the vertical plane to more depth.  相似文献

The isotopic composition of Sr has been measured in brine samples from the Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas; 87Sr86Sr ratios range from 0.7071 to 0.7101. With one exception, the 32 Smackover brines contain Sr which is significantly more radiogenic than the Sr in Late Jurassic sea water, indicating sizable Sr contributions from detrital sources. Isotopic analyses of core samples from rock units associated with the brines and regional stratigraphic relationships suggest that the radiogenic Sr was released from detrital minerals in Bossier shale to interstitial fluids expelled from the underlying Louann Salt in the North Louisiana salt basin. These fluids migrated through the Bossier Formation updip to the South Arkansas shelf, where they entered the upper Smackover carbonate grainstone. The radiogenic fluids mixed with Sr-rich interstitial marine waters that had the isotopic composition of Late Jurassic sea water; mixing in variable proportions resulted in the random distribution pattern of variable 87Sr86Sr ratios that is observed in Smackover brines within the 5000 km2 study area. Isotopic analyses of nonskeletal carbonate grains and coexisting coarse calcspar cement from the upper Smackover grainstone imply that the grains were diagenetically stabilized in the presence of interstitial marine waters, whereas the calcspar cement is a relatively late diagenetic phase precipitated after the arrival of radiogenic fluids.  相似文献

Black Butte is an early Miocene basaltic volcanic neck that forms a prominent landmark as the highest peak of the Gravelly Range, southwestern Montana. The intrusion cuts mid-Cenozoic and older sedimentary rocks near the eastern margin of the Overthrust Belt.

After erosional removal of the Late Cretaceous Frontier Formation, quartzite-rich detritus from ultimate sources probably far to the west was deposited in the area and now forms a diamicton that rests on striated bedrock. This unit, previously interpreted as a till and as a mudflow deposit, probably represents Upper Cretaceous or lower Tertiary, syntectonic alluvial-fan sediments. These were deposited after the Gravelly Arch had begun to rise and were deformed during overthrusting from the west or possibly during mass movement as the basal part of a landslide.

Scattered cobbles of hard quartzite in the diamicton are crushed. If this crushing occurred within aggregates of coarse clasts that were momentarity in point contact with one another, it does notrequire either overthrusting or mass movement of extremely thick depositional overburden. But if a major thrust sheet did move over the diamicton, the leading edge of the Overthrust Belt must extend considerably further east of where it is currently recognized in this area.

Volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks were deposited in the area throughout much or all of Oligocene time. These include tuffaceous mudstone as much as 265 m thick that contains vertebrate fossils of Chadronian through Whitneyan age. The KAr age of biotite in an airfall tuff within this section at nearby Lion Mountain is 31.4 Ma, and the KAr age of an alkaline basaltic flow at the top of the Lion Mountain section is 30.8 Ma. These tuffaceous rocks and basalt on Lion Mountain correlate with volcaniclastics in Wyoming and as far east as Nebraska and the Dakotas.

Eruptions at Black Butte, dated previously at 22.9 Ma, begun with phreatomagmatic explosions that deposited tuff across an irregular topographic surface cut in the section of tuffaceous mudstone into which the Black Butte plug was emplaced. The alkali basalt magma differentiated to yield the relatively rare rock typetephritic phonolite during fractional crystallization and segregation in situ of potassic late liquids.

Lava flows from Black Butte and the nearby Lion Mountain volcanic center may have covered much of this part of the Gravelly Range but have been mostly removed owing to erodability of the thick blanket of mudstone on which they rested.

Removal of mudstone that contained the Black Butte intrusion involved massive slumping. Mass movement of the diamicton beneath the mudstone is occurring today as an earthflow down the west-dipping structural and topographic slope of the range.  相似文献

The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted under the Paris Agreement propose a country’s contribution to global mitigation efforts and domestic adaptation initiatives. This paper provides a systematic analysis of NDCs submitted by South Asian nations, in order to assess how far their commitments might deliver meaningful contributions to the global 2°C target and to sustainable broad-based adaptation benefits. Though agriculture-related emissions are prominent in emission profiles of South Asian countries, their emission reduction commitments are less likely to include agriculture, partly because of a concern over food security. We find that income-enhancing mitigation technologies that do not jeopardize food security may significantly augment the region’s mitigation potential. In the case of adaptation, analysis shows that the greatest effort will be directed towards protecting the cornerstones of the ‘green revolution’ for ensuring food security. Development of efficient and climate-resilient agricultural value chains and integrated farming bodies will be important to ensuring adaptation investment. Potentially useful models of landscape level climate resilience actions and ecosystem-based adaptation are also presented, along with estimates of the aggregate costs of agricultural adaptation. Countries in the region propose different mixes of domestic and foreign, and public and private, adaptation finance to meet the substantial gaps.

Key policy insights

  • Though substantial potential for mitigation of agricultural emissions exists in South Asia, governments in the region do not commit to agricultural emissions reductions in their NDCs.

  • Large-scale adoption of income-enhancing technologies is the key to realizing agricultural mitigation potential in South Asia, whilst maintaining food security.

  • Increasing resilience and profitability through structural changes, value chain interventions, and landscape-level actions may provide strong options to build adaptive capacity and enhance food security.

  • Both private finance (autonomous adaptation) and international financial transfers will be required to close the substantial adaptation finance gap

Uttarakhand geothermal area, located in the central belt of the Himalayan geothermal province, is one of the important high temperature geothermal fields in India. In this study, the chemical characteristics of the thermal waters are investigated to identify the main geochemical processes affecting the composition of thermal waters during its ascent toward the surface as well as to determine the subsurface temperature of the feeding reservoir. The thermal waters are mainly Ca–Mg–HCO3 type with moderate silica and TDS concentrations. Mineral saturation states calculated from PHREEQC geochemical code indicate that thermal waters are supersaturated with respect to calcite, dolomite, aragonite, chalcedony, quartz (SI > 0), and undersaturated with respect to gypsum, anhydrite, and amorphous silica (SI < 0). XRD study of the spring deposit samples fairly corroborates the predicted mineral saturation state of the thermal waters. Stable isotopes (δ18O, δ2H) data confirm the meteoric origin of the thermal waters with no oxygen-18 shift. The mixing phenomenon between thermal water with shallow ground water is substantiated using tritium (3H) and chemical data. The extent of dilution is quantified using tritium content of thermal springs and non-thermal waters. Classical geothermometers, mixing model, and multicomponent fluid geothermometry modeling (GeoT) have been applied to estimate the subsurface reservoir temperature. Among different classical geothermometers, only quartz geothermometer provide somewhat reliable estimation (96–140 °C) of the reservoir temperature. GeoT modeling results suggest that thermal waters have attained simultaneous equilibrium with respect to minerals like calcite, quartz, chalcedony, brucite, tridymite, cristobalite, talc, at the temperature 130 ± 5 °C which is in good agreement with the result obtained from the mixing model.  相似文献

Tritium concentrations in river and stream waters from different locations can be compared by normalizing them using the ratio of tritium concentrations in precipitation and surface water (Cp/Cs) in the study area. This study uses these ratios in a hydrological residence time context to make regional‐ and global‐scale comparisons about river basin dynamics. Prior to the advent of nuclear weapons testing, the Cp/Cs ratio was greater than or equal to 1 everywhere because of the decay of tritium in the watershed after it was deposited by precipitation. After an initial increase in the ratios during the bomb peak, the ratio dropped to less than 1 for most surface waters in the following years. This post‐bomb change in the ratio is due to the retention of the bomb‐pulse water in watersheds on timescales that are long relative to the residence time of tritium in the atmosphere. Ratios were calculated for over 6500 measurements of tritium in river and stream waters compiled by the International Atomic Energy Agency. These measurements span the post‐nuclear era (1940s to present) and include many long‐term datasets, which make it possible to examine residence times of waters in watersheds on a global basis. Plotting Cp/Cs versus time shows that ratios tended to reach a minimum in approximately one to two decades after the bomb peak for most locations. This result suggests that changes affecting quantity and quality of river flows need to be assessed on a multi‐decadal timescale. These long lag times have significant implications for assessing climate or land‐use change impacts on a large number of river systems around the world. The continuing value of tritium in studying surface water systems for both the Southern and Northern Hemisphere is also demonstrated. Published 2014.
