Zusammenfassung Die spektralanalytisch untersuchten Kügelchen der Tiefsee sind durch ihren Nickelgehalt als meteoritisch ausgewiesen.Bei den meisten Funden aus Bohrkernen muß eine technische Entstehung vor allem bei höheren Mangangehalten vermutet werden, so daß von einer Art Uhr, die die Sedimentationsgeschwindigkeit anzeigt, noch nicht gesprochen werden kann.Herrn Professor Dr. Dr. h. c.C. On the application of turbulence theory to the determination of marine evaporation

Summary Simultaneous measurements of wind, air temperature, and humidity profiles as well as of evaporation, presented byTakahashi (1958), were compared with relevant formulae suggested by turbulence theory. Satisfactory agreement could be achieved if, near the sea surface, the influence of molecular diffusion and, at higher levels, the effect of thermal stratification on the profiles were taken into account in addition to a suitable reduction of the value of evaporation obtained by means of a floating pan.The chief results of this report have been presented on 27th April 1962 to the Tenth Yearly Meeting of theSocietà Italiana di Geofisica e Meteorologia (Genova: 26–28 April 1962).

Neue ZnS-Polytypen (9R, 12R und 21R) in mesozoischen Sedimenten NW-Deutschlands

Summary Argillaceous sediments of jurassic and lower cretaceous age in NW-Germany contain in several localities authigenous ZnS-polytypes. The crystals with a maximum height of 2 mm exhibit hexagonal-pyramidal and trigonal-pyramidal habit.With X-ray rotation and precession technique the following polytypes could be identified: Sphalerite (3 R = 3 C) 211, 411, 6H 9R, 12R, 15R and 21R.The 9 R-, 12 R- and 21 R-polytypes have not until now been described elsewhere.The structures of the new polytypes were determined as 9R=(21), 12R=(13) and 21R=(3112).Oriented intergrowths of R- and H-polytypes were frequently observed. From the intergrowth-phenomena arguments for the environmental conditions of formation can be deducted.[/p]     

Untersuehungen an den Sedimenten der Tongrube von Willershausen

Zusammenfassung Nach der Profilaufnahme sind die Sedimente der Tongrube der Ziegelei von Willershausen in zwei Gruppen einzuteilen : A. Die unteren hellen Schichten, B. die oberen dunklen Schichten.Die unteren hellen Schichten bestehen aus Sandsteinen, Sanden, tonigen Sanden und Grobtonen, welche Quarz, Feldspäte und Glimmer als Hauptminerale und in geringeren Mengen Illit, Chlorit und manchmal Montmorillonit füren. Als Schwerminerale dieser Sande und Sandsteine treten der Häufigkeit nach Apatit, Zirkon, Granat, Anatas, Rutil, Turmalin und Opakminerale auf.Die oberen dunklen Schichten bestehen hauptsächlich aus mm-rhythmisch geschichteten Tonen mit Einschaltung einzelner Mergelbänke und toniger Sandschichten. Dioktaedrischer Illit ist das häufigste Tonmineral, dann folgen Chlorit und in geringeren Mengen in feinen Fraktionen Montmorillonit. Die Chlorit-Reflexe verschwinden bereits bei Erhitzung auf 450° C. Chemisch handelt es sich um die dem Pennin naheliegenden Diabantite.Die Unterschiede in Beschaffenheit und Menge der Quarze, Feldspäte und Glimmer, die unterschiedliche Verteilung der Schwerminerale sprechen dafür, daß die hellen Schichten wahrscheinlich zum Mesozoikum, vielleicht zum Buntsandstein gehören.Von der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Georg-August-Universität zu Göttingen genehmigte Dissertation.     

Structure and petrology of an alpine peridotite on Cypress Island,Washington, U.S.A

A study of the structural petrology of a peridotite exposed on Cypress Island in Skagit Co., Washington, U.S.A. has been carried out. The Cypress peridotite is, by virtue of its composition, structure and associations, typical of ultramafics of the alpine type. It contains relict layering and accumulative textures which show it to have originated by crystal settling from a magma of unknown initial composition. Parallelism of lineations and b-axes of folds in the layering with well-developed [100]-maxima in the fabrics of olivine crystals is considered to have arisen through a penetrative deformation of the mass accompanied by plastic flow or recrystallization of the olivine. An indication of the minimum temperature of the deformation is provided by cross-cutting veins of pyroxenite which have not participated in the folding. The most satisfactory interpretation of the overall fabric of the peridotite is that it was deformed, possibly during intrusion, as a crystal mush, and that filter pressing due to compaction of the solid particles by plastic flow or recrystallization removed all but a small percentage of the magmatic fraction which then crystallized following cessation of the movements.     

La pénétration de l'air froid dans une vallée alpine

Résumé Les observations de deux stations situées à l'entrée de la vallée du Rhône et à l'intérieur de celle-ci permettent de déterminer dans une certaine mesure comment l'air froid pénètre dans cette longue vallée des Alpes suisses. L'accès se fait beaucoup plus souvent par-dessus les montagnes de l'Ouest ou du Nord que par le chenal de la vallée seulement.

Summary The observations of two stations at the entrance and in the interior of the Rhône valley allow to a certain degree to determine how cold air penetrates this long extended valley of the Swiss Alps. The influx of air takes much more frequently place over the mountains in the West and North than through the trough of the valley.

Zusammenfassung Die Beobachtungen von zwei Stationen, die am Eingang und im Inneren des Rhonetals gelegen sind, erlauben einigermaßen festzustellen, wie die Kaltluft in dieses langgestreckte Tal der Schweizeralpen eindringt. Dabei erfolgt der Luftzustrom viel häufiger über die Berge im W und N als ausschließlich durch die Talrinne.
