Beyond the present technologies, Laue diffraction lenses are very promising tools in the field of gamma-ray astrophysics. The theoretical concepts of this kind of instruments are based on the Laue diffraction in crystals, discovered almost 100 years ago. Though they are commonly used in crystallography, their application to γ-ray focusing in astrophysics requires some specific developments, e.g. in terms of energy and imaging responses. The present article describes the physics of X-ray diffraction in crystals. In the context of the Darwin model of mosaic crystals, some peculiar aspects, relevant to the astrophysical observation, are discussed. The evaluation and optimization of diffraction efficiency are discussed, especially with rigards to the crystal’s mosaicity and thickness, its spatial extent and deviations to the “ideally imperfect” Darwin model.

Abstract— Magmatic sulfide mineralogy has been studied in 2 olivine‐phyric shergottites (DaG 476 and SaU 005) and 4 basaltic shergottites (Zagami, Shergotty, Los Angeles, and NWA 480). Modal abundances of magmatic sulfides, as estimated by image analysis on thin section, are high (0.16 to 0.53 area percent) and correlate positively with abundances of Fe‐Ti oxides. Sulfides are mesostasis minerals, being mostly interstitial grains or locally enclosed in post‐cumulus melt inclusions (e.g., SaU 005) in olivine. Sulfides in shergottites are composed of major pyrrhotite containing pentlandite exsolutions associated with minor amounts of Cu sulfides (chalcopyrite and/or cubanite). Hot desert finds (e.g., DaG 476) show abundant fracture‐filling iron (oxy)hydroxides of probable terrestrial origin. Unaltered sulfides show metal‐rich hexagonal pyrrhotite compositions with metal/sulfur (M/S) ratio ranging between 0.936 ± 0.005 and 0.962 ± 0.01. This compositional range corresponds to the two‐phase structural domain 2C + nC of the Fe‐S system; however, the high‐temperature disordered hexagonal 1C pyrrhotite structure would be in better agreement with magnetic properties of shergottites. Ni contents in pyrrhotite increase from Los Angeles (<0.05 at%) to Shergotty, Zagami, and NWA 480 (0.2–0.5 at%), and DaG 476 and SaU 005 (up to 3 at%). The higher Ni values of pyrrhotite in olivine‐phyric shergottites correlate with the abundance of pentlandite exsolutions, both reflecting more primitive Ni‐rich sulfide liquids where abundant olivine crystallized. This result and the strong correlation between sulfide abundances and Fe‐Ti oxides argue for a primary magmatic origin of these sulfides. Although they reproduce the trend of magmatic oxygen fugacity conditions determined from Fe‐Ti oxide pairs, observed pyrrhotite compositions are systematically more metal‐deficient compared to those calculated from the Fe‐S‐O system. This suggests post‐magmatic oxidation during cooling on Mars, followed by terrestrial weathering for hot desert finds. 相似文献

Conclusion The problem of correctly estimating the true mean of a time series of observations is not a simple one. Data normalization must be done with care, and no general recipe can be found that applies to all pH data series — or, for that matter, to any other variable of limnological interest. It depends on the type of variable and on the sampling scale (temporal or spatial), among other factors; each case has to be subjected anew to the search of the best normalizing transformation. Then, when estimating the confidence interval of the mean from a few observations only, the autocorrelation properties of the series must imperatively be taken into account. F. E. analysis of field consolidation curves obtained with the modified borehole shear device (BHSD)
A modified version of the bore hole sheat device (BHSD) was used to obtain field consolidation curves in a soft sensitive clay. The Porewater pressure dissipation was monitored at the centre of one of the shear plates. This paper describes briefly the in situ device employed and demonstrates the basic features of the linearelastic F. E. program ‘SOL’. A detailed study is made to simulate the field behaviour with the finite element approach. Comparisons are made between the field and analytical consolidation behaviour. Difficulties in predicting the value of the coefficient of consolidation of a sensitive clay using the BHSD consolidation curves are discussed. 相似文献

Assessment of above ground forest biomass (AGB) is essential in carbon modelling studies to provide mitigation strategies as demonstrated by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Several researchers have demonstrated the use of remote sensing data in spatial AGB estimation, in terms of spectral and radar backscatter based approaches at a landscape scale with several known limitations. However, these methods lacked the predictive ability at high biomass ranges due to saturation. The current study addresses the problem of saturation at high biomass ranges using canopy textural metric from high resolution optical data. Fourier transform based textural ordination (FOTO) technique, which involves deriving radial spectrum information via 2D fast Fourier transform and ordination through principal component analysis was used for characterizing the textural properties of forest canopies. In the current study, plot level estimated AGB from 15 (1 ha) plots was used to relate with texture derived information from very high resolution datasets (viz., IKONOS and Cartosat-1). In addition to the estimation of high biomass ranges, one of the prime objective of the current study is to understand the effects of spatial resolution on deriving textural-AGB relationship from 2.5 m IRS Cartosat data (Cartosat-A, viewing angle = ?5°) to that of IKONOS imagery with near nadir view. Further, since texture is impacted by several illumination geometry issues, the effect of viewing geometry on the relationship was evaluated using Cartosat-F (Viewing angle = 26°) imagery. The results show that the FOTO method using stereo Cartosat (A and F) images at 2.5 m resolution are able to perform well in characterizing high AGB values since the texture-biomass relationship is only subjected to 18 % relative error to that of 15 % in case of IKONOS and could aid in reduction of uncertainty in AGB estimation at a large landscape levels. 相似文献

Basin‐wide correlation of Messinian units and Plio‐Quaternary chronostratigraphic markers (5.3 Ma, 2.6 Ma, 0.9 Ma and 0.45 Ma), the mapping of total sediment thickness and the determination of overall sedimentary volumes enabled us to provide a high‐resolution quantitative history of sediment volumes for the last 6 Ma along the Gulf of Lions margin. The results point to (i) a dramatic increase in terrigenous sediment input during the Messinian Salinity Crisis. This increased sedimentation reflects enhanced regional fluvial erosion related to the dramatic fall of Mediterranean base‐level. Stronger weathering due to a regional wetter climate probably also increased erosional fluxes. (ii) A sediment input three times higher during the Plio‐Quaternary compared to the Miocene seems in agreement with published measurements from World's ocean. However, the timing of this increase being uncertain, it implies that the trigger(s) also remain(s) uncertain. (iii) A decrease in detrital volume around 2.6 Ma is attributed to a regional change in the drainage pattern of rivers in the northwestern Alps. (iv) This study also highlights the Mid‐Pleistocene Revolution around 0.9 Ma, which resulted in an almost doubling of sediment input in the Provencal Basin. 相似文献

Sixty samples were collected in June 1996 at regular intervals within the Seine estuary in France in order to study the arsenic (As) behavior in response to climatic and hydrologic conditions leading to major events in chlorophyll activity, anoxia, turbidity, and salinity. It was determined that arsenate (As5, 15–23 nM) is still the dominant chemical form of dissolved As in the upper, estuary. A concentration of up to 37 nM was observed in the high turbidity zone at the freshwater-seawater interface, presumably a result of pumping and remineralization of plankton particles that develop at salinities >10. The formation of arsenite (As3) was related to two processes: anoxia in the upper estuary and primary production in the superoxygenated, lower estuary. Dimethyl arsenic (DMA) concentrations (0 to 2.2 nM) were not directly correlated with chlorophyll content, but rather with oxygenation rates. Monomethyl arsenic (MMA) concentrations were low. Dissolved organoarsenic concentrations refractory to the formation of volatile hydrides showed high concentrations in the river estuary (1 to 6 nM), and their degradation was probably the cause of DMA and MMA and ultimately of the recycling of dissolved inorganic As. The remineralization of particulate arsenic (AsP) in the high turbidity zone at the freshwater-seawater interface, was apparent once AsP concentrations were normalized with respect to aluminium. This remineralization process, even though it does not exclude the possibility of intra-estuarine As inputs, could account for a major part of the high dissolved total As concentration observed in this specific zone, both in the Seine and other estuaries. 相似文献

High‐resolution swath bathymetry data collected in fjord‐lakes Pentecôte, Walker and Pasteur (eastern Québec, Canada) allowed imaging in great detail the deltas of four rivers in order to understand the factors controlling the formation and downslope evolution of bedforms present on their slopes. The morphometry and morphology of 199 bedforms reflect the behaviour of sediment density flows. The shape of the bedforms, mostly crescentic, and the relationships between their morphological properties indicate that they were formed by supercritical density flows and that they are cyclic steps. The crescentic shape suggests an upslope migration while the aspect ratios and increasing wavelengths with distance from the shore (and decreasing slopes) are compatible with a cyclic step origin. At the rollover point, the acceleration of the density flows on steep slopes produces tightly spaced hydraulic jumps and favours short wavelength and symmetrical bedforms. Further downslope, decreasing slopes and increasing specific discharge increase the wavelength and asymmetry of the bedforms. The wavelength and asymmetry are increased because density flows require longer distances to become supercritical again on lower slopes after each successive hydraulic jump. Bedform morphometry and morphology are used to reconstruct density flow behaviour downslope. Froude numbers are high near the rollover point and gradually decrease downslope as the slope becomes gentler. Conversely, the specific discharge and flow depth are low near the rollover point and gradually increase downslope as the flow either erodes sediments or becomes more dilute due to sediment deposition and water entrainment. The supercritical density flows are believed to be triggered mainly by hyperpycnal flows but some evidence of delta‐front slope failures is also observed. The differences in delta morphology and bedform development between the four deltas are linked to basin morphology and watershed hydrology, but also mainly to the fjord heritage of the lakes that allowed the focusing of sediment at the delta front. 相似文献
