Silver determinations in the sea-water around Monaco were carried out using a procedure consisting of preconcentration of silver with lead sulfide, followed by dithizone extraction and spectrophotometric mono-colour measurement of silver-dithizonate. The average concentration of silver in the surface sea-water around Monaco was found to be 0.14Μg Ag/l. It was also concluded that observed variations of silver content in seawater were not related to the fresh water run-off from the neighbouring coast. This suggests that the variations have to be attributed to some other factor or a combination of factors. On the basis of the observed values of the silver content of the Var River water, an upper limit of silver supply by fresh waters into the sea-area around Monaco is estimated to be 2.3Μg Ag per liter of fresh water. Considering the mixing of the fresh water with sea-water, an increase of up to 0.09Μg Ag/l in the sea-water might be expected. The fact that the increase of silver in the sea-water was not observed in connection with the fresh-water mixing suggests that some effective removal process of silver may be in operation at the immediate vicinity of the injection of fresh-water into the sea.  相似文献

Rainfall is characterized by high variability both in space and time. Despite continuous technological progress, the available instruments that are used to measure rainfall across several spatio-temporal scales remain inaccurate. To remedy this situation, scaling relationships of spatial rainfall offer the potential to link the observed or predicted precipitation quantities at one scale to those of interest at other scales. This paper focuses on the estimation of the spatial rainfall scaling functions. Standard scaling analysis constructed by means of the ordinary least squares method often violates such basic assumptions implicit in its use and interpretation as homoschedasticity, independence, and normality of the errors. Consequently, the authors consider alternative regression frameworks i.e. bootstrapping regression, semi parametric linear model, and multilevel normal linear model to show how these different approaches exert a significant impact on the multifractal analysis of radar rainfall. In addition, the uncertainties associated with the construction of the scaling function due solely to the regression procedure are quantified. The radar data come from the polarimetric C-band weather radar located in Rome, Italy, and the scaling properties are computed for a square domain centred on the radar site with a side length of 128 km and a finest resolution of 1 km2.  相似文献

Initial investigations of Holocene carbonate sediment from Hawes Water, Northwest England, yielded lower numbers of chironomid head capsules than anticipated. Standard techniques used to prepare sediment for chironomid analysis were ineffective in breaking up the coarse crystalline sediment structure sufficiently. This led to large amounts of sediment being retained and increased sample processing times. The low yield of head capsules also meant that more sediment was needed to produce adequate numbers of head capsules for analysis. The use of ultra-sound as part of the sediment processing was investigated. This technique reduced the amount of sediment left for sorting and yielded significantly more head capsules which were of equivalent structural condition and cleaner than those produced by conventional methods. The technique was extended to clay samples where similar results were obtained although shorter treatment times are recommended. The proportion of Tanytarsini and Tanypodinae heads increased significantly in carbonate and clay samples, respectively; both sediment types showed a significant decline in the proportion of Chironomini. The results indicate that ultra-sonic preparation of samples will yield a more accurate representation of chironomid assemblages in sediments leading to greater sensitivity and reliability in analysing past environmental conditions.  相似文献

The interactions between plants and herbivores are key determinants of community structure world wide. Their role is particularly important in lowland tropical rain forests where rates of herbivory are higher, plants are better defended chemically and physically, and herbivores have specialized diets. In contrast to the temperate zone, most of the herbivory in the tropics occurs on ephemeral young leaves (>70%), which requires herbivores to have finely tuned host-finding abilities. As a consequence of these tight ecological and evolutionary linkages, the interplay between plants and herbivores in the tropics may be more susceptible to perturbations of climate change.Increases in global temperature, atmospheric CO2, and the length of the dry season are all likely to have ramifications for plant/herbivore interactions in the tropics. Here I extrapolate from our current and incomplete understanding of the mechanisms regulating plant/herbivore interactions and present a scenario for possible trends under a changing climate. Although elevated CO2 tends to enhance plant growth rates, the larger effects of increased drought stress will probably result in lower growth. In atmospheres experimentally enriched in CO2, the nutritional quality of leaves declines substantially due to a dilution of nitrogen by 10-30%. This response is buffered in plant species associated with nitrogen fixers. Elevated CO2 should also cause a slight decrease in nitrogen-based defenses (e.g., alkaloids) and a slight increase in carbon-based defenses (e.g., tannins). The most dramatic and robust predicted effect of climate change is on rates of herbivory. Lower foliar nitrogen due to CO2 fertilization of plants causes an increase in consumption per herbivore by as much as 40%, and unusually severe drought appears to cause herbivore populations to explode. In areas where elevated CO2 is combined with drying, rates of herbivory may rise 2-4 fold. The frequency of insect outbreaks is also expected to increase. Higher herbivory should further reduce plant growth rates, perhaps favoring plant species that are well-defended or fix nitrogen. The predicted increase in the number of herbivores is primarily due to relaxed pressure from predators and parasitoids. Elevated temperatures may increase herbivore developmental times, affording them partial escape from discovery by natural enemies, and drought appears to decimate parasitoid populations. The expected decline in parasitoid numbers may be due to direct effects of dry season drought or to the relative scarcity of herbivores during that period. As a consequence, the relative abundance of species will change, and overall biodiversity should decline.  相似文献

We describe the world's largest synthesis radio telescope, the Very Large Array (VLA), and how it can be used to complement observations with the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the Yohkoh solar spacecraft. The VLA provides images with high spatial and temporal resolution, often across the visible solar disk. The VLA also detects nonthermal radiation that is not observed with SOHO and Yohkoh, and provides estimates for the coronal magnetic field strengths that are not directly measured by these spacecraft. The VLA data can be combined with SOHO CDS, SOHO EIT, or Yohkoh SXT observations to provide new insights to the compact, variable sources, called blinkers and bright points, in the solar transition region or low corona. A new 400 cm VLA system provides images of nonthermal burst activity associated with Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), and may detect thermal emission from CMEs, that can be compared with SOHO's LASCO and EIT instruments to obtain new information about the origin and evolution of CMEs.  相似文献

Mechanisms of compaction of quartz sand at diagenetic conditions   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The relative contribution of cracking, grain rearrangement, and pressure solution during experimental compaction of quartz sand at diagenetic conditions was determined through electron and optical microscopy and image analysis. Aggregates of St. Peter sand (255±60 μm diameter grain size and porosity of approximately 34%) were subjected to creep compaction at effective pressures of 15, 34.5, 70, and 105 MPa, temperatures of 22 and 150°C, nominally dry or water-saturated (pore fluid pressure of 12.5 MPa) conditions, and for times up to one year. All aggregates displayed transient, decelerating creep, and volume strain rates as low as 2×10−10 s−1 were achieved. The intensity of fracturing and degree of fragmentation increase with volume strain and have the same dependence on volume strain at all conditions tested, indicating that impingement fracturing and grain rearrangement were the main mechanisms of compaction throughout the creep phase. The increase in fracture density and decrease in acoustic emission rate at long times under wet conditions reflect an increase in the contribution of subcritical cracking. No quantitative evidence of significant pressure solution was found, even for long-term creep at 150°C and water-saturated conditions. Comparison of our findings to previous work suggests that pressure solution could become significant at temperatures or times somewhat greater than investigated here.  相似文献

In two limno-corrals loaded with heavy metals the density of tubificid worms and chironomid larvae was higher than in the control. The better oxygen conditions observed in the heavy metal loaded corrals might explain this discrepancy. The higher oxygen concentration at the sediment-water interface was due to lower organic sedimentation, consequence of the primary production reduced by heavy metals. In all limno-corrals, the tubificid populations consisted ofTubifex tubifex. The size structure of tubificid populations in the heavy metal loaded corrals indicated a delayed reproduction compared to the control.  相似文献

The δC13 and δO18 values of skeletons of shallow water, ahermatypic scleractinian corals from Jamaica show an excellent correlation over a wide range of isotopic composition. Within individual specimens there are large differences in the isotopic composition of separate skeletal elements. Some of these ahermatypes are enriched in O18 relative to equilibrium precipitates of calcium carbonate from Jamaican sea water. Therefore our data do not support a two-reservoir mixing model for calcification if one of these reservoirs consists of dissolved marine (inorganic) bicarbonate. As some of these ahermatypic species are enriched in both C13 and O18 relative to hermatypic corals from the same reefs, calcification models based on withdrawal of metabolic CO2 by photosynthesizing zooxanthellae must also be modified.  相似文献

The Very Large Array (VLA) and the RATAN 600 were used to observe a solar active region on two consecutive days around the time of a partial solar eclipse in July 1990. VLA synthesis maps at 2.0, 3.5, and 6.2 cm wavelength reveal bright (T b = 0.2 – 2.2 × 106 K), compact ( = 10–40) sources above the penumbra of the leading sunspot while maps at 20 cm wavelength reveal an extended ( 4.5) looplike structure (T b 106 K) between the dominant spots. Total flux and brightness temperature spectra of both components were obtained by the RATAN at nine wavelengths between 1.7 and 21 cm. The relatively-flat spectrum of the extended emission is attributed to the optically thin thermal brems Strahlung of electrons trapped in a magnetic loop at coronal temperatures. Step-spectrum sunspot-associated emission is attributed to thermal gyroresonance radiation at different heights along the leg of a loop joining regions of opposite magnetic polarity. Comparisons with predicted distributions of gyroresonance radiation indicate that the compact sunspot-associated sources lie at heights of h = 2500–17500 km above the photosphere. Although potential fields of sufficient strength appear to exist at coronal heights, differences n the observed and predicted brightness distributions suggest some role for non-potential fields or for an inhomogeneous distribution of electron density or temperature above the sunspot.  相似文献
