Vis–NIR spectroscopy is nowadays presented as a possible routine method for soil sample analysis. However, there is still no consensus on which is the best multivariate statistical method to use. We propose to use principal component analysis to complete the spectral data treatment. The soil samples came from a pedological cover made up of red–yellow Latosols: 88 samples of 11 soil profiles on four toposequences were collected; clay, organic matter, silica, iron, aluminum and titanium total contents were determined; the contents of goethite, hematite, gibbsite, and kaolinite were calculated. Diffuse reflectance Vis–NIR spectroscopy at wavelengths from 400 to 2400 nm combined with principal component analysis (PCA) was sufficiently sensitive to discriminate different Latosols. Wavelengths of 700 nm and 2200 to 2300 nm were influenced by content ratios of organic matter and iron oxides (700 nm), and kaolinite and gibbsite absorption (2200 and 2300 nm). The spectral responses were affected not only by the content of these constituents, but also by the composition of the minerals, so that the same class of Latosol may have different or similar spectral responses. The search for suitable sites to install near-surface repositories for low to intermediate level radioactive wastes has increased in the recent years, reflecting both the continuous rise in radioactive materials applications by the society and the increasing awareness of public perception regarding radwaste management. International recommendations towards the application of higher safety standards to low and intermediate level waste disposal sites being developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the European Commission decision that each Member State must safely dispose its own radwaste in its territory, according to national radwaste management plans, has leading to new soundly scientific studies. In Portugal, possible locations for that purpose are under study since 2006, following the pre-requisites indicated by IAEA. One of these sites overlaps a significant portion of an ultramafic massif, corresponding to an allochthonous and metamorphosed ophiolite complex. In the surveyed area of this massif, the prevailing rock type consists of (serpentinised) peridotites, occasionally containing irregular bodies of (amphibolitised) gabbros, over which an irregular/ill-developed regolith exists. The activities of 40K, 137Cs, 210Pb, 226Ra and 232Th measured in samples representing three consecutive levels of the regolith upper portion in 13 stations confirm the heterogeneity put in evidence through in situ γ-ray surveys previously performed. The available dataset also demonstrates that radionuclide contents decrease prominently with depth, becoming closer to the bedrock values (up to ca. 41 Bq kg?1 for 40K in flaser-gabbros and near zero for all the remaining cases) but never reaching them. Therefore, the low/moderate radionuclide activity in the regolith upper portion reflect the contribution of sources that are independent of the lithological background; i.e. they indicate external and miscellaneous contributions to the “soil”-forming components, most of them coming from (dry or wet) atmospheric deposition. The chemical composition of the (serpentinised) peridotites and (amphibolitised) gabbros in the surveyed area, as well as their alteration products included in regolith, is homogeneous enough to be used as a faithful reference in monitoring studies of any kind. In addition, the significant 137Cs activities measured in some top “soil” samples (up to 92 Bq kg?1) strongly suggest that there are mineralogical specificities of the peridotite-derived regolith able to fix that radionuclide. This particular feature reinforces the existing criteria that favour the peridotites of Morais as a suitable host for a near surface repository of low to intermediate level radwaste.  相似文献

In Uruguay commercial granite varieties comprise mafic rocks, granitoids, and syenitoids. There is a long tradition in Uruguay, as well as worldwide, of using dimensional stones in architecture and art, specially granitic ones. Some of the present applications of these dimensional stones are as façade cladding, countertops, and outdoor and indoor floor slabs. The color spectrum of the Uruguayan granitic dimensional stones varies from black to light gray, covering a wide variety of red and pink and minor greenish-gray. The décor of these granitic dimensional stones is mainly determined by their fabric, fundamentally the grain size and the color distribution between the different minerals that compose the rocks. In the present research the most important commercial granites were sampled to analyze their petrography and petrophysical properties. A detailed structural analysis has been performed in several deposits, as well as the application of the software 3D Block Expert for modeling the possible raw block size distribution. Other factors controlling the mining viability of the deposits were also studied (e.g., homogeneity/heterogeneity of color and décor) and the possible reserves were calculated.  相似文献

We examine electron and nuclear recoil backgrounds from radioactivity in the ZEPLIN-III dark matter experiment at Boulby. The rate of low-energy electron recoils in the liquid xenon WIMP target is 0.75 ± 0.05 events/kg/day/keV, which represents a 20-fold improvement over the rate observed during the first science run. Energy and spatial distributions agree with those predicted by component-level Monte Carlo simulations propagating the effects of the radiological contamination measured for materials employed in the experiment. Neutron elastic scattering is predicted to yield 3.05 ± 0.5 nuclear recoils with energy 5-50 keV per year, which translates to an expectation of 0.4 events in a 1 yr dataset in anti-coincidence with the veto detector for realistic signal acceptance. Less obvious background sources are discussed, especially in the context of future experiments. These include contamination of scintillation pulses with Cherenkov light from Compton electrons and from β activity internal to photomultipliers, which can increase the size and lower the apparent time constant of the scintillation response. Another challenge is posed by multiple-scatter γ-rays with one or more vertices in regions that yield no ionisation. If the discrimination power achieved in the first run can be replicated, ZEPLIN-III should reach a sensitivity of ∼1 × 10−8pb · yr to the scalar WIMP-nucleon elastic cross-section, as originally conceived.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

An accurate comprehension of celerity (flood wave speed) dynamics is a key step for understanding flood wave propagation in rivers. We present the results of empirically estimated celerity values in 12 Brazilian rivers, and analyse the behaviour of celerity–discharge relationships (CxQ). Celerity was estimated with a reach-scale (RS) method, based on the peak travel time between stations; and with a local-scale (LS) method, based on the derivative of discharge–cross-section area relationships surveyed at gauging stations. The results indicate that the magnitudes of celerity values obtained by the methods are reasonably comparable, and can rarely be considered constant, varying with river discharge. Three reaches presented differing CxQ relationships at local and reach scales, which suggests that in situ cross-sections at gauging stations should not be extrapolated as representative of the whole reach for flood routing studies, and that CxQ relationship assessments might provide relevant insights for hydrological modelling.  相似文献

This discussion is focused on three aspects of the paper published by Lafuente et al. (Int J Earth Sci, doi: 10.1007/s00531-010-0542-1, 2010) on Concud Fault, constitute the fundamental basis to assess the seismic potential of this capable structure: (1) A slip rate estimated for the Concud Fault based on an erroneous displacement value and a questionable correlation, obviating previously published datings, markedly different to those used by the authors. The wrong displacement value introduces an error of more than 25% in the calculated Quaternary slip rate. (2) A new paleoseismological interpretation of the outcrop of Condud Fault at Los Baños, adding two improperly justified paleoearthquakes to the four events previously inferred. (3) The attribution of faults affecting a young terrace to the most recent recorded earthquake on Concud Fault, ruling out implicitly the likely option of a gravitational origin for them, either landsliding or subsidence due to evaporite dissolution.  相似文献

This paper proposes methods to detect outliers in functional data sets and the task of identifying atypical curves is carried out using the recently proposed kernelized functional spatial depth (KFSD). KFSD is a local depth that can be used to order the curves of a sample from the most to the least central, and since outliers are usually among the least central curves, we present a probabilistic result which allows to select a threshold value for KFSD such that curves with depth values lower than the threshold are detected as outliers. Based on this result, we propose three new outlier detection procedures. The results of a simulation study show that our proposals generally outperform a battery of competitors. We apply our procedures to a real data set consisting in daily curves of emission levels of nitrogen oxides (NO\(_{x}\)) since it is of interest to identify abnormal NO\(_{x}\) levels to take necessary environmental political actions.  相似文献
