To examine algae populations, three expeditions (in March 2001, April 2002 and February 2003) were conducted in the Guba Chupa (Chupa Estuary; north-western White Sea), and one cruise was carried out in the open part of the White Sea in April 2003 and in the northern part of the Barents Sea in July 2001. Sea ice algae and phytoplankton composition and abundance and the content of sediment traps under the land-fast ice in the White Sea and annual and multi-year pack ice in the Barents Sea were investigated. The community in land-fast sea ice was dominated by pennate diatoms and its composition was more closely related to that of the underlying sediments than was the community of the pack ice, which was dominated by flagellates, dinoflagellates and centric diatoms. Algae were far more abundant in land-fast ice: motile benthic and ice-benthic species found favourable conditions in the ice. The pack ice community was more closely related to that of the surrounding water. It originated from plankton incorporation during sea ice formation and during seawater flood events. An additional source for ice colonization may be multi-year ice. Algae may be released from the ice during brine drainage or sea ice melting. Many sea ice algae developed spores before the ice melt. These algae were observed in the above-bottom sediment traps all year around. Three possible fates of ice algae can be distinguished: 1) suspension in the water column, 2) sinking to the bottom and 3) ingestion by herbivores in the ice, at the ice-water interface or in the water column.  相似文献

The recently advanced approach of wavelet transform is applied to the analysis of wave data measured in the nearshore areas of the Great Lakes. The conventional spectrum analysis of wave time series in the frequency domain can be readily generalized to the frequency and time domain using the wavelet transform. The traditional Fourier transform approach has not been able to directly assess the time localized nature of wave groups. With the application of wavelet transformation, the relatively unexplored wave grouping characteristics come to light as the predominant feature of wave processes.  相似文献

An estimation of the volume of light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) is often required during site assessment, remedial design, or litigation. LNAPL volume can be estimated by a strictly empirical approach whereby core samples, distributed throughout the vertical and lateral extent of LNAPL, are analyzed for LNAPL content, and these data are then integrated to compute a volume. Alternatively, if the LNAPL has obtained vertical equilibrium, the thickness of LNAPL in monitoring wells can be used to calculate of LNAPL in monitoring wells can be used to calculate LNAPL volume at the well locations if appropriate soil and LNAPL properties can be estimated.
A method is described for estimating key soil and LNAPL properties by nonlinear regression of vertical profiles of LNAPL saturation. The methods is relatively fast, cost effective, and amenable to quantitative analysis of uncertainty. Optionally, the method allows statistical determination of best-fit values for the Van Genuchten capillary parameters (n, αoil-water and αoil-air), residual water saturation and ANAPL density. The sensitivity of the method was investigated by fitting field LNAPL saturation profiles and then determining the variation in misfit (mean square residual) as a function of parameter value for each parameter. Using field data from a sandy aquifer, the fitting statistics were found to be highly sensitive to LNAPL density, αoil-water and αoil-air moderately sensitive to the Van Genuchten n value, and weakly sensitive to residual water saturation. The regression analysis also provides information that can be used to estimate uncertainty in the estimated parameters, which can then be used to estimate uncertainty in calculated values of specific volume.  相似文献

The availability of airborne LiDAR data provides a new opportunity to overcome some of the problems associated with traditional, field‐based, geomorphological mapping such as restrictions on access and constraints of time or cost. The combination of airborne LiDAR data and GIS technology facilitates the rapid production of geomorphological maps of floodplain environments; however, unfiltered LiDAR data, which include vegetation and buildings, are currently more suitable for geomorphological mapping than data that have been filtered to remove these features. Classification of LiDAR data according to elevation in a GIS enables the user to identify and delineate geomorphological features in a manner similar to field mapping, but it is necessary to use a range of classification intervals in order to map the various types of feature that occur within a single reach. Comparison of a LiDAR‐derived geomorphological map with an independently produced field geomorphological map showed a high degree of similarity between the results of the two methods, although ground‐truthing is essential in cases where a high degree of accuracy is required. Ground‐truthing of a LiDAR‐derived geomorphological map showed that around 80% of features mapped using both methods were identified from the LiDAR data, suggesting that the method is suitable for applications such as production of base maps for use in field mapping and selection of sites for detailed investigation. This study presents the modelling of 2-D and 3-D wide-angle seismic data acquired on the complex, volcanic passive margin of the Vøring Plateau, off Norway. Three wide-angle seismic profiles were shot and recorded simultaneously by 21 Ocean Bottom Seismometers, yielding a comprehensive 3-D data set, in addition to the three in-line profiles. Coincident multi-channel seismic profiles are used to better constrain the modelling, but the Mesozoic and deeper structures are poorly imaged due to the presence of flood basalts and sills. Velocity modelling reveals an unexpectedly large 30 km basement high hidden below the flood basalt. When interpreted as a 2-D structure, this basement high produces a modelled gravity anomaly in disagreement with the observed gravity. However, both the gravity and the seismic data suggest that the structure varies in all three directions. The modelling of the entire 3-D set of travel times leads to a coherent velocity structure that confirms the basement high; it also shows that the abrupt transition to the slower Cretaceous basin coincides in position and orientation with the fault system forming the Rån Ridge. The positive gravity anomaly over the Rån Ridge originates from the focussed and coincident elevation of the high velocity lower crust and pre-Cretaceous basement. Although the Moho is not constrained by the seismic data, the gravity modelled from the 3-D velocity model shows a better fit along the profiles. This study illustrates the interest of a 3-D acquisition of wide-angle seismic over complex structures and the benefit of the subsequent integrated interpretation of the seismic and gravity data.  相似文献

Linear and second-order surface wave interactions with floating and bottom-mounted bodies of realistic geometry are simulated in the time domain by a three-dimensional Rankine panel method. The fundamental stability analysis governing the propagation of transient wave disturbances on a panel mesh distributed on the free surface is carried out from first principles. The radiation condition is enforced by a dissipative beach selected to coincide with an outer annulus of panels. The fundamental physics governing the wave energy absorption is presented and the beach attributes are selected and validated for the linear and second-order problems. Computations are presented of the linear and sum-frequency second-order forces on a single and multiple truncated circular cylinders, and very good agreement is found with benchmark computations. The accuracy and efficiency of this method render it a promising candidate for the study of complex nonlinear wave induced phenomena upon offshore platforms, like springing and ringing.  相似文献

We reformulate the original model of Hatchell and Bourne and Røste, Stovas and Landrø that couples fractional velocity change to subsurface strain via a fundamental constant R. The new model combines elastic compressibility of a dual‐porosity system for a sand–shale mixture with horizontal planes of inter‐granular weakness. The majority of observed R‐factor magnitudes from post‐stack 4D seismic data in both the reservoir and overburden can thus be explained. R is predicted to depend strongly on lithology and also initial strain state. The model is also extended to predict the observed angle‐dependence of time‐lapse time‐shifts from pre‐stack data. An expression for the gradient of time‐shift with incidence angle is obtained in terms of the background VP/VS, and also the ratio of tangential to normal compliances BT/BN representing loss or creation of inter‐granular coupling. If accurately estimated from data, this compliance ratio can be used as an additional parameter to assess the post‐production state of the overburden. It is concluded that whilst R remains the over‐arching parameter controlling the magnitude of time‐shifts measured from 4D seismic data, BT/BN is a subtler parameter that may also prove of future value.  相似文献
