Xenolith assimilation has been simulated with experiments involving melting wax spheres into hot water and aqueous solutions
and characterised by a theoretical analysis. Both the cases of neutrally buoyant stationary spheres and spheres sinking through
the hot host fluid are examined. Melt generated on a sphere's surface flows (compositional convection) in two regimes; as
a sheet over one hemisphere and then detaching as finger plumes from the other. Positional variations in the melting rate
are dominantly controlled by differences in the melt layer thickness which influence the thermal gradient and heat flux across
the layer. The theoretical model predicts melt layer thicknesses and the heat flux from the surrounding fluid. Calculated
melting rates agree well with experimental measurements. Partial melting of non-eutectic compositions produces a layer of
crystal-melt mush at the xenolith's surface. The theoretical analysis is extended to account for variation in rheological
properties across the mush layer. When stoped into typical magmas, xenoliths of common continental crust lithologies are predicted
to melt at rates in the order of 2 mm/hour. Thicknesses of the mobile mush layer around xenoliths are predicted to be typically
a few centimetres. Relatively mafic lithologies can melt quicker than silicic compositions because, although they are typically
more refractory, their lower melt viscosities result in thinner mush layers and so higher heat fluxes. Especially quick melting
of water-saturated lithologies occurs as a consequence of both the reduction in melting temperatures and melt viscosities.
Due to hot ambient conditions in the lower continental crust the assimilation of xenoliths into underplated basaltic magma
can be very rapid. For granulites and mafic-granulites the predicted melting rates are up to 17 mm/hour. Fast rates of melting
and efficient mixing of melt into the host magma indicate that assimilation of xenoliths will have a significant influence
on the compositional and thermal evolution of magmas.

Corundums from basalt fields, particularly in Australia and Asia, include a dominant blue-green-yellow zoned “magmatic” suite
(BGY suite) and subsidiary vari-coloured “metamorphic” suites. The BGY corundums have distinctive trace element contents (up
to 0.04 wt% Ga2O3 and low Cr/Ga and Ti/Ga ratios <1). Different melt origins for BGY corundums are considered here from their inclusion and
intergrowth mineralogy, petrologic associations and tectonic setting. Analysed primary inclusion minerals (over 100 inclusions)
cover typical feldspars, zircon and Nb-Ta oxides and also include hercynite-magnetite, gahnospinel, rutile-ilmenite solid
solution, calcic plagioclase, Ni-rich pyrrhotite, thorite and low-Si and Fe-rich glassy inclusions. This widens a previous
inclusion survey; New England, East Australia corundums contain the most diverse inclusion suite known from basalt fields
(20 phases). Zircon inclusion, intergrowth and megacryst rare earth element data show similar patterns, except for Eu which
shows variable depletion. Temperature estimates from magnetite exsolution, feldspar compositions and fluid inclusion homogenization
suggest that some corundums crystallized between 685–900 °C. Overlap of inclusion Nb, Ta oxide compositions with new comparative
data from niobium-yttrium-fluorine enriched granitic pegmatites favour a silicate melt origin for the corundums. The feasibility
of crystallizing corundum from low-volume initial melting of amphibole-bearing mantle assemblages was tested using the MELTS
program on amphibole-pyroxenite xenolith chemistry from basalts. Corundum appears in the calculations at 720–880 °C and 0.7–1.1 GPa
with residual feldspathic assemblages that match mineral compositions found in corundums and their related xenoliths. A model
that generates melts from amphibole-bearing lithospheric mantle during magmatic plume activity is proposed for BGY corundum
formation.

This paper presents the results of a detailed structural analysis of the northern Nijar and southern Vera basins with special emphasis on the evolution of the regional stress field and the associated timing of movement of the Serrata, Gafarillos and Palomares strike-slip fault zones. These major fault zones control the Neogene deformation of the SE Internal Betic Cordilleras in Spain. Detailed stress analysis on Neogene sediments of the Vera and Nijar basins shows a strike-slip regime with NW–SE-oriented subhorizontal maximum principal stress (σ1) during Tortonian and earliest Messinian times. Under the influence of this stress field, dextral displacement along the N090E-trending Gafarillos fault zone resulted in deformation of the sediments of the southern Sorbas and northeastern Nijar basins. During the early Messinian a clock-wise rotation of the stress field occurred. Stress analysis in rocks with late–early Messinian up to Quaternary ages in the Nijar and Vera basins indicates a strike-slip regime with N–S-oriented subhorizontal maximum principal stress (σ1). Under the influence of this stress field the main activity along the N010E-striking Palomares strike-slip fault zone took place, resulting in deformation of the Neogene sediments of the southeastern Vera basin and culminating in a maximum sinistral displacement of more than 20 km. At the same time the stress field was not suitably oriented to exert a large shear component on the Gafarillos fault zone, which activity ended after the earliest Messinian. Fault and outcrop patterns of syntectonic Neogene sediments in the Vera basin show that displacement along the Palomares fault zone decreased at the end of the Middle Miocene although minor displacement phases may still have occurred during the Late Miocene and possibly even Pliocene. From the Middle Miocene onward, deformation in the Nijar basin was controlled by sinistral displacement along the N040E-trending Serrata strike-slip fault zone. 相似文献

The effects of the passage of a spiral arm through the disc of the giant Virgo Sc galaxy NGC 4321 are investigated with Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images in two colours. Concentrating on a portion of the southern spiral arm of NGC 4321, we have applied a new program to solve for the star formation histories in the arm and interarm regions separately. The observational uncertainties and the variable crowding across the spiral arm are taken into account using the results of artificial star tests. In the interarm regions the data are consistent with a constant star formation rate for the last 50 Myr while the stars in the arm region show a star formation rate four times larger than in the interarm regions in the last 5 Myr. 相似文献

Observations of 167 small, shallow landslides spanning a 22-year period on extensively logged slopes of Quaternary terraces
in the lower Skagit and Baker Valleys, Washington, shows that there is a relationship between the common slope failures in
this area and the slope angle, stratigraphy, and logging practices. Landslide frequency increases upvalley, as do mean annual
precipitation and the frequency of perched water tables.
Debris slides are most common, occur on steep slopes (>50%) composed of sand and gravel, and are most abundant in areas previously
logged by the clear—cut method. Debris flows occur on shallower slopes (>30%) where the stratigraphy leads to perched water
tables. Debris flows larger than 600 m2 in area appear to be unrelated to logging practices. Slump flows, described here for the first time, occur on similar slope
angles and stratigraphic situations as debris flows. They differ mainly by the presence of semiconsolidated material, usually
till, at the slide head. Where till is breached—commonly along road cuts—water infiltration is increased, saturating underlying
fine-grained deposits, which then fail by debris flowage. Secondary slumping of till happens when the slope steepens during
debris flow failure.
Small landslides surrounding Lake Shannon may contribute up to 80% of the total particulate matter yield to the fluvial system
at present, increasing lake sedimentation by a rate of 5 mm/yr. 相似文献

Rb-Sr and Pb/Pb whole rock isochrons on the Qôrqut Granite Complex yield ages of and 2580 ± 80 Myr respectively. A model relating initial Sr and Pb isotopic compositions of the Qôrqut granites to the Sr and Pb isotopic compositions of the Amîtsoq gneisses (ca. 3700 Myr) and Nûk gneisses (ca. 2900 Myr) at 2550 Myr ago, as well as Sr and Pb contents of the gneiss units, suggests that between 40 and 50% of the Qôrqut granite magma was generated by partial melting of Amîtsoq gneisses, and the remainder by partial melting of Nûk gneisses. 相似文献

Dispensing Chemists represent an important component in the organization of primary medical care in the United Kingdom, as well as providing a basic retail service. Over the past 30 years, the number of dispensing chemists' shops in Scotland has fallen by 40%, a withdrawal of services which has important spatial welfare implications. In this paper the locational dynamics of pharmaceutical retailing are examined, and the pattern of change between 1950 and 1980 is described. It is shown that the major trend, at both regional and intra-urban levels, is centralization. This trend is only weakly related to patterns in population change. Rather, it is the product of a general restructuring of retailing, reinforced by changes in the structure of the health care delivery system. 相似文献

In Asia, the intensity and style of active tectonics appears to depend on the age of the last orogenic activity. The shields have remained essentially undeformed during the India-Eurasian collision, but Paleozoic and Mesozoic orogenic belts apparently have been reactivated by this collision, with a suggestion of greater reactivation and more diffuse deformation of the younger belts. If the greater observed heat flow in regions of more recent orogenic activity reflects, at least in part, a greater heat flow from the mantle beneath the younger belts, then the temperatures in the mantle beneath the younger belts should be higher than beneath older belts and shields. Because of the strong dependence on temperature of the creep strength of minerals, particularly of olivine, the crust and mantle beneath the hotter, younger belts should be much weaker than those beneath older belts. This difference in temperature, and consequent difference in strength, may be the cause of the greater reactivation of younger belts. 相似文献

The behaviour and form of, and bedload sediment transport through, a 3.5 m wide forest stream have been monitored for nearly three years. Bedload transport is highly episodic and spatially variable, and is controlled less by water discharge than by sediment availability. Organic debris in the channel creates temporary base levels and sites at which coarse sediment may remain stored for long periods; collapse or disruption of log and debris jams makes sediment available for transport in only a small proportion of the runoff events that are actually competent to move the material. Even then, sediment travels only a short distance before being redeposited, frequently behind debris accumulations further downstream. Rates of sediment transport during a given runoff event can vary markedly over short distances along the stream, again depending on whether sediment was made available for transport by log jam collapse upstream. Organic debris is therefore a major constraint on the application of physical laws and theories to explaining sediment movement in, and the morphology of, this stream. 相似文献

Some results of induced polarisation surveys carried out for the exploration of sulphide mineralisation in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat, employing both frequency-domain and time-domain techniques, are presented. A few typical examples of I.P. results along with borehole sections and results of conventional geophysical surveys have been incorporated.
