Abstract— The Haughton impact structure has been the focus of systematic, multi‐disciplinary field and laboratory research activities over the past several years. Regional geological mapping has refined the sedimentary target stratigraphy and constrained the thickness of the sedimentary sequence at the time of impact to ?1880 m. New 40Ar–39Ar dates place the impact event at ?39 Ma, in the late Eocene. Haughton has an apparent crater diameter of ?23 km, with an estimated rim (final crater) diameter of ?16 km. The structure lacks a central topographic peak or peak ring, which is unusual for craters of this size. Geological mapping and sampling reveals that a series of different impactites are present at Haughton. The volumetrically dominant crater‐fill impact melt breccias contain a calcite‐anhydrite‐silicate glass groundmass, all of which have been shown to represent impact‐generated melt phases. These impactites are, therefore, stratigraphically and genetically equivalent to coherent impact melt rocks present in craters developed in crystalline targets. The crater‐fill impactites provided a heat source that drove a post‐impact hydrothermal system. During this time, Haughton would have represented a transient, warm, wet microbial oasis. A subsequent episode of erosion, during which time substantial amounts of impactites were removed, was followed by the deposition of intra‐crater lacustrine sediments of the Haughton Formation during the Miocene. Present‐day intra‐crater lakes and ponds preserve a detailed paleoenvironmental record dating back to the last glaciation in the High Arctic. Modern modification of the landscape is dominated by seasonal regional glacial and niveal melting, and local periglacial processes. The impact processing of target materials improved the opportunities for colonization and has provided several present‐day habitats suitable for microbial life that otherwise do not exist in the surrounding terrain.  相似文献

Abstract— This study serves as a proof‐of‐concept for the technique of using visible‐near infrared (VNIR), short‐wavelength infrared (SWIR), and thermal infrared (TIR) spectroscopic observations to map impact‐exposed subsurface lithologies and stratigraphy on Earth or Mars. The topmost layer, three subsurface layers and undisturbed outcrops of the target sequence exposed just 10 km to the northeast of the 23 km diameter Haughton impact structure (Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada) were mapped as distinct spectral units using Landsat 7 ETM+ (VNIR/SWIR) and ASTER (VNIR/SWIR/TIR) multispectral images. Spectral mapping was accomplished by using standard image contrast‐stretching algorithms. Both spectral matching and deconvolution algorithms were applied to image‐derived ASTER TIR emissivity spectra using spectra from a library of laboratory‐measured spectra of minerals (Arizona State University) and whole‐rocks (Ward's). These identifications were made without the use of a priori knowledge from the field (i.e., a “blind” analysis). The results from this analysis suggest a sequence of dolomitic rock (in the crater rim), limestone (wall), gypsum‐rich carbonate (floor), and limestone again (central uplift). These matched compositions agree with the lithologic units and the pre‐impact stratigraphic sequence as mapped during recent field studies of the Haughton impact structure by Osinski et al. (2005a). Further conformation of the identity of image‐derived spectra was confirmed by matching these spectra with laboratory‐measured spectra of samples collected from Haughton. The results from the “blind” remote sensing methods used here suggest that these techniques can also be used to understand subsurface lithologies on Mars, where ground truth knowledge may not be generally available.  相似文献

GETEMME (Gravity, Einstein??s Theory, and Exploration of the Martian Moons?? Environment), a mission which is being proposed in ESA??s Cosmic Vision program, shall be launched for Mars on a Soyuz Fregat in 2020. The spacecraft will initially rendezvous with Phobos and Deimos in order to carry out a comprehensive mapping and characterization of the two satellites and to deploy passive Laser retro-reflectors on their surfaces. In the second stage of the mission, the spacecraft will be transferred into a lower 1500-km Mars orbit, to carry out routine Laser range measurements to the reflectors on Phobos and Deimos. Also, asynchronous two-way Laser ranging measurements between the spacecraft and stations of the ILRS (International Laser Ranging Service) on Earth are foreseen. An onboard accelerometer will ensure a high accuracy for the spacecraft orbit determination. The inversion of all range and accelerometer data will allow us to determine or improve dramatically on a host of dynamic parameters of the Martian satellite system. From the complex motion and rotation of Phobos and Deimos we will obtain clues on internal structures and the origins of the satellites. Also, crucial data on the time-varying gravity field of Mars related to climate variation and internal structure will be obtained. Ranging measurements will also be essential to improve on several parameters in fundamental physics, such as the Post-Newtonian parameter ?? as well as time-rate changes of the gravitational constant and the Lense-Thirring effect. Measurements by GETEMME will firmly embed Mars and its satellites into the Solar System reference frame.  相似文献

We explore the dependence of the subhalo mass function on the spectral index n of the linear matter power spectrum using scale-free Einstein-de Sitter simulations with   n =−1  and −2.5. We carefully consider finite volume effects that may call into question previous simulations of   n < −2  power spectra. Subhaloes are found using a 6D friends-of-friends algorithm in all haloes originating from high-σ peaks. For   n =−1  , we find that the cumulative subhalo mass function is independent of the parameters used in the subhalo finding algorithm and is consistent with the subhalo mass function found in Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) simulations. In particular, the subhalo mass function is well fit by a power-law with an index of  α=−0.9  , that is the mass function has roughly equal mass in subhaloes per logarithmic interval in subhalo mass. Conversely, for   n =−2.5  , the algorithm parameters affect the subhalo mass function since subhaloes are more triaxial with less well-defined boundaries. We find that the index α is generally larger with  α≳−0.75  . We infer that although the subhalo mass function appears to be independent of n so long as   n ≳−2  , it begins to flatten as   n →−3  . Thus, the common practice of using  α≈−1.0  may greatly overestimate the number of subhaloes at the smallest scales in the CDM hierarchy.  相似文献

This paper is the continuation of a previous work [6] in which we have obtained the set of all possible equilibria of a gyrostat satellite attracted by n points mass by solving two algebraical equations P1=0 and P2=0. It results that there is a maximum of 24 isolated equilibrium orientations for the satellite. Sufficient conditions of stability for these relative equilibria are given.Here we consider only the elementary case n=1. We show that the coefficients of the two algebrical equations depend on four parameters j1, j3, K and v2. The two first parameters depend only on the direction of the internal angular momentum of the rotors, the third being only function of the principal moments of inertia of the satellite and the last parameter is a decreasing function of one of the components of . We show that the two polynomials P1 and P2 are unvariant within two transformations of the parameters j1 and j3. It is then possible to reduce the range of variation of these parameters.For some particular values of the parameters, it is possible to give the minimum number of real roots of equations P1=0 and P2=0. In general cases, a computing program is written to obtain the number of real roots of these equations according to the values of the parameters. We show that among the roots found, few of them corresponds to stable equilibrium orientations.  相似文献

We present a model of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) related to “very massive” stars. In the framework of our model, the GRB phenomenon is a result of helium burning in degenerate conditions in a massive star (≳130 M ), in which the thermal nuclear burning occurs in the deflagration regime and has a pulsating temporal pattern. The shock runs away from the burning (reaction) zone, which leads to the development of a coronal outflow (jet-like) structure. In our scenario the GRB observable prompt fast rise and decay part can be a result of photon propagation through the hot corona (Comptonization photosphere) of the star. On the other hand, the GRB afterglow is a cooling phase of the expanding and outflowing envelope. Presumably, the X-ray part of the GRB emergent spectrum is formed due to upscattering of soft photons of outer layers of the star off hot coronal electrons, and thus it should have a specific shape of the Comptonization spectrum.  相似文献

We consider the motion of a dual spin satellite placed in the gravitational field of n material points, assuming that the satellite has no influence on the motion of these points. The main bodies are located at the libration points of the classical n bodies problem. We investigate the set of relative equilibria of the satellite. As in the elementary case of a gyrostat attracted by a single point, we show that this problem is equivalent to find the extremum of a quadratic function. We obtain all possible equilibria of the satellite by solving two algebraic equations. Sufficient conditions of stability of these relative equilibria are given.  相似文献

A simplified model of the planar Three-Body Problem is considered in which two particles, forming a close binary, orbit a distant point. A small parameter , related to the distance separating the binary and the remaining mass is defined. The time is eliminated from the equations of motion and an angular variable is used instead. A two-variable expansion procedure is used to find an asymptotic solution. The solution obtained is known completely up to the order ten in , and it is valid for almost arbitrary initial conditions. Specification of the initial conditions leads to a solution which is periodic with respect to a modified time variable.
Résumé On considère un modèle simplifé du Problème Plan des Trois Corps, dans lequel deux particules, formant une binaire proche, sont en orbite par rapport à un troisième point éloigné des deux autres. On définit un petit paramètre , lié à la distance séparant la binaire de la particule restante. On élimine le temps des équations du mouvement et on utilise une variable angulaire comme nouvelle variable indépendante. Une méthode de développement à deux échelles est utilisée permettant d'obtenir une solution asymptotique du problème. La solution obtenue est connue complètement jusqu'àl'ordre dix en , et elle est valable pour des conditions initiales très générales. Pour des conditions initiales bien déterminées, on obtient une solution périodique par rapport à une nouvelle variable temporelle.
