Lateglacial buried soil horizons, which occur widely in sandy aeolian sequences of northern central Europe, were analysed in order to evaluate their regional pedostratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental potential. Data on stratigraphy, sedimentology, pedology, geochronology and palaeobotany from 29 palaeosol-bearing profiles at terrestrial sites are presented. Greyish Ahb and Eb horizons occur, as well as brownish Bwb and BwAhb horizons. They are 5–30 cm thick, showing similar pedological properties except colour, and they frequently bear charcoal typically from pine. Soil classification results in Albic Arenosols (Dystric) and Brunic Arenosols (Dystric) representing palaeosols of the Usselo and Finow types, respectively. Radiocarbon dating of the palaeosols reveals a dominance of Allerød ages followed by Younger Dryas and Preboreal ages. Most luminescence ages on overlying aeolian sands date into the Allerød–Younger Dryas interval. Mapping of all Usselo and Finow soil occurrences ( n =96) in northern central Europe known so far reveals a nearly closed Finow soil province between Usselo soil areas in NW Germany and central Poland, mainly situated in NE Germany. Most Usselo soils compiled contain charcoal, indicating widespread and repeated fires. Recent claims that the Usselo soil represents an event layer from rapid aeolian sedimentation caused by an extraterrestrial impact is rejected. Instead, both Usselo and Finow soils can be assumed to be pedostratigraphical marker horizons in northern central Europe and beyond.  相似文献

The marine Quaternary of Vendsyssel has been studied in a series of new boreholes in the area, and the climatic development is discussed on the basis of foraminiferal assemblages and stable isotopes. The foraminiferal zones are correlated with previously published records from northern Denmark, and the spatial local and regional distribution is discussed in details based on the new evidence. The new data show that the marine sedimentation in Vendsyssel was not continuous from the Late Saalian to the Middle Weichselian, as previously thought. For example, there is indication of a hiatus at our key site, Åsted Vest in the central part of Vendsyssel, at the transition between regional foraminiferal zones N4 and N3, i.e. at the Late Saalian (MIS 6) – Eemian (MIS 5e) transition. The hitherto most complete Early Weichselian succession (zone N2) in Vendsyssel is presented from Åsted Vest. Deposits from the Early Weichselian sea‐level lowstands (MIS 5d and 5b) may, however, be missing in parts of the area. Two major breaks in the marine deposition during the Middle Weichselian represent glacial advances into northern Denmark. The first event occurred just after deposition of the regional foraminiferal zone N2 (late MIS 4), and the second event in the middle part of zone N1 (early MIS 3). Zone N1 is succeeded by a series of non‐marine units deposited during the sea‐level lowstand of the Weichselian maximum glaciation (late MIS 3 and MIS 2), including deeply incised tunnel valleys, which have been refilled with non‐marine sediments during the Late Weichselian. Vendsyssel was inundated by the sea again during the Late Weichselian, at c. 18 kyr BP. Subsequently, the marine conditions were gradually changed by forced regression caused by local isostatic uplift, and around the Weichselian–Holocene transition most of Vendsyssel was above sea level. A continuous deposition across the Late Weichselian–Holocene boundary only occurred at relatively deep sites such as Skagen. The environmental and climatic indications for Vendsyssel are in accordance with the global sea‐level curve, and the Quaternary record is correlated with the oxygen isotope record from the NorthGRIP ice core, as well as the marine isotope stages.  相似文献

The successful application of modern observing techniques for Leonid storm observations show that meteor (shower) detections will have a bright future if the field will pursue difficult but important questions. How to forecast a satellite threatening meteor storm? What happens to the organic matter in meteors and can this be an important source of prebiotic molecules? What range of variations in composition and morphology exists among cometary grains and what does this tell us about the origin of the solar system? What long-period comets approach Earth orbit and can meteoroid streams provide early warning for giant impacts? What are the sources of interstellar and interplanetary grains? Just to mention a few. To answer these questions will need new technologies and facilities, some of which are being developed for other use. This may include NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared and sub-millimeter Astronomy (SOFIA). In addition, big-science space missions can drive the field if meteor detections are an integral part. Special events, such as meteor outbursts and the “artificial meteor” from the reentry of sample return capsules from interplanetary space, can mobilize observing and theoretical efforts. These and other future opportunities are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The dynamics of daily weather types according to Schüepp's classification in the Alpine region is investigated by means of seasonal Markov chain models. A logit model is employed for the transition probabilities of the Markov chain. The parameters follow from a maximum likelihood estimation. A 1st‐ and a 2nd‐order Markov chain model are compared and found to yield very similar results. Model predictions are compared with counted frequencies of seasonally‐averaged joint probabilities for the occurrence of weather types at subsequent days, monthly‐averaged probabilities of a change of the weather type from one to the next day, and daily averages of the probabilities of occurrence of the different weather types. All these predictions coincide with the observations within the statistical limits. The only large deviations occur in the tails of the lengths distributions of uninterrupted episodes of the two most frequent weather types.  相似文献

Dispersal patterns of indicator rocks in central Gaspésie reveal that glacial debris is entrained in a basal debris-rich zone of shearing where clast diffusion takes place. The Grand-Volume Till forms a thin till sheet over the high plateaus of Gaspésie Peninsula and resulted from a succession of two Wisconsinan ice flows of distinct orientations (SSE and NE). The lithological composition of this till determined by pebble counts and the three-dimensional dispersal patterns of indicator rocks in it suggest that debris transport occurred principally by simple shear deformation of glacial debris. In addition, the intermixing of clasts at the intersection of two lithologically distinct dispersal trains of SSE and NE orientations, respectively, suggests that extensive mixing takes place during shearing. Physical interactions among the clasts lead to both upward and downward movements which cause the clasts to diffuse across the zone of shearing. This process of shear-diffusion results in continuous incorporation and mixing of the newly encountered rock types during glacial transport.  相似文献

Rarely-preserved features indicative of clast lodgement are exceptionally well preserved near Peoria, Illinois, on the contact surface between Illinoian till and underlying glacifluvial sand due to synsedimentary cementation of the substrate contact. Features preserved on the cemented contact surface record a history of particle transport, lodgement by ploughing into a deformable substrate, and subsequent overriding by abrasive debris-rich ice. Linear grooves and frontal sediment prows suggest that clasts embedded in the glacier sole ploughed through the soft, deformable bed. Increasing form resistance by the enlargement of sediment prows that developed on the lee side of clasts and deeper penetration of the clasts into the substrate eventually exceeded the force exerted on the clasts by ice flow, and the clasts lodged. Subsequently, clasts were abraded on their up-ice flanks and plucked on their down-ice flanks, resulting in stoss-lee morphology. These features offer direct information on the nature of the interface between aglacier and a soft, deformable substrate such as characterized large areas of former ice sheets.  相似文献
