The dust layer at an altitude of about 80 km causes the attenuation of the light of the stars during the OAO-2 satellite observations near the horizon. This is compared with absorption due to ozone near to 2400 A in the spectral range, using ozone concentration measured by the OAO-2 satellite.  相似文献

We discuss the effects in ionospheric absorption of particle precipitation observed in the afternoon-early evening sector during substorms with onset in the midnight sector. All events considered here occurred during magnetically disturbed periods, Kp > 3. For many of the substorm events a smooth southward moving absorption bay is seen in the midnight and evening sectors about 1 h preceeding the onset. The magnetic pulsation activity is low during this preceding bay.

After substorm onset near magnetic midnight the precipitation region may expand with a sharp onset at the front towards the West in spatially confined regions at high and low L-values separately with about equal velocities. The observations are consistent with a model of westward expansion of the energetic electron precipitation in two regions, aligned parallel to the auroral oval, at high and low L-values of about L 6 and L 4.8.

The westward expanding absorption activity correlates well with local magnetic variations. In magnetic pulsations PiB events are seen at high latitudes simultaneously with the westward moving onsets while at low latitudes IPDP pulsations are observed during the active part of the absorption events. Later in the substorm event a slowly varying absorption event (SVA) is sometimes observed at the lower L-values, L 3–4.  相似文献

In-situ deformation experiments were performed on partially molten analog materials (norcamphor in the presence of a benzamide–norcamphor melt) undergoing pure shearing at a constant melt fraction of 0.13. Melt in the samples induces a strain-dependent transition from purely dislocation creep to dislocation creep associated with minor intergranular fracturing and grain boundary sliding (GBS). Intergranular fractures drain the melt from initially isotropic melt pockets to grain boundaries. Along such boundaries, grain-boundary migration recrystallization is inhibited, while GBS occurs. Intergranular melt pockets occur along grain boundaries oriented subparallel to the shortening direction, but melt must have migrated parallel to the elongation direction of the samples, as indicated by melt accumulations at both extruding ends of the sample. Intergranular melt pockets parallel to the elongation direction were only rarely observed, because melt was rapidly expelled from these sites. Nevertheless, these grain boundaries are the pathways of melt segregation in the samples.  相似文献

The climate of the 1930s was used as an analog of the climate that might occur in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas (the MINK region) as a consequence of global warming. The analog climate was imposed on the agriculture of the region under technological and economic conditions prevailing in 1984/87 and again under a scenario of conditions that might prevail in 2030. The EPIC model of Williamset al. (1984), modified to allow consideration of the yield enhancing effects of CO2 enrichment, was used to evaluate the impacts of the analog climate on the productivity and water use of some 50 representative farm enterprises. Before farm level adjustments and adaptations to the changed climate, and absent CO2 enrichment (from 350 to 450 ppm), production of corn, sorghum and soybeans was depressed by the analog climate in about the same percent under both current and 2030 conditions. Production of dryland wheat was unaffected. Irrigated wheat production actually increased. Farm level adjustments using low-cost currently available technologies, combined with CO2 enrichment, eliminated about 80% of the negative impact of the analog climate on 1984/87 baseline crop production. The same farm level adjustments, plus new technologies developed in response to the analog climate, when combined with CO2 enrichment, converted the negative impact on 2030 crop production to a small increase. The analog climate would have little direct effect on animal production in MINK. The effect, if any, would be by way of the impact on production of feed-grains and soybeans. Since this impact would be small after on-farm adjustments and CO2 enrichment, animal production in MINK would be little affected by the analog climate.  相似文献

This paper provides a framework for integrated assessment of the impacts of climate change on natural resources and sets the stage for papers that follow in this volume. Integrated assessments are used to organize large quantities of technical information bearing on complex issues (environmental and others) in ways that facilitate application of the information in decision making and policy setting. Any integrated assessment must be based on the best available information. For that reason this paper includes a ‘primer’ on the current (and presumably best available) understanding of the science underlying climatic change. The remainder of the paper describes the component parts of one possible framework for integrated assessment.  相似文献

The increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere should result in a general increase in the net primary productivity of most cultivated species and forest species, assuming no counterproductive climatic changes occur. The photosynthetic rate of C3 plants is most responsive to increasing concentration of CO2 in the ambient air. C4 plants demonstrate a stomatal closure that causes reduced transpiration. In the case of both types of plants, the water use efficiency (photosynthesis/transpiration) is likely to be improved.It has been suggested that photosynthetic production may be limited today more by shortages of water and nutrients than by shortages of carbon dioxide. The author speculates that the inadvertant CO2-fertilization now occurring could, in itself, cause a moderate release from these constraints.Physiological responses to an increased atmospheric CO2 concentration are easily demonstrated in controlled environment studies. Because of the difficulty in maintaining artifically enriched air near the crop against the forces of turbulent transfer, studies in the open field have been inconclusive. The observation of decreased photosynthetic rate in a perennial crop during that part of the growing season when CO2 concentration is naturally low suggests a technique by which it may be possible to infer what will happen in the real world of agricultural fields if a CO2-rich environment, such as is predicted in the coming decades, materializes. Nickel laterites and bauxites, including their proposed parent rocks from the Mesozoic of Greece, have been investigated by means of mineralogical and geochemical methods. The results are discussed in order to recognize the genetic sequence which comprises: pre-lateritic alteration and reworking of ophiolites and associated rocks, lateritic in-situ weathering, reworking and redeposition of the alteration products in an epicontinental transition environment, and post-depositional events affecting the mineralogical and geochemical properties.The ultramafic massifs of the Euboea and Locris area, i.e. the parent rocks of the Ni---Fe deposits, are primarily harzburgites which represent the erosional outliers of a probable “complete” ophiolitic nappe that were transformed to a monomineralic lizarditite. Xenoliths of basic and sedimentary rocks are included in the serpentine matrix of the basal tectonic melange. Lateritic Ni---Fe deposits resting as in-situ alterites on ophiolites or as mechanically reworked laterite detritus, either on serpentinite or karstified limestone, are mainly derived from serpentinites. The ore deposits in the Locris area have been affected by a strong supergene epigenetic overprint, mainly resulting in a downward Ni redistribution and enrichment. A continuous transition from karstic Ni---Fe deposits towards bauxitic material in a southern direction is interpreted as sedimentary admixture of weathering products of different origin.The three bauxite horizons B1, B2 and B3 and their satellite horizons are intercalated in epicontinental shallow-water limestones within an Upper Jurassic to Middle Cretaceous sequence. A karstic surface (unconformity) forms the substratum of these bauxite horizons.Similar to nickel laterites on karst, the detrital parent material was transported from a terrestrial hinterland by widely ramified river systems into a brackish lagoonal or marine environment from a northeastern to southwestern direction. Colloidal matter, fine muds and coarse material were deposited on a karst topography in mechanical traps by successive debris flows during cycles of emersion and marine regressions.Diagenesis resulted in (a) leaching of silica and iron under partly reducing conditions, and (b) recrystallization of iron minerals and neoformation of Al minerals, i.e. boehmite and/or diaspore. During tectonic subsidence and early marine transgression a strong supergene-epigenetic downward mobilization of Fe, Mn and associated elements took place. They were reprecipitated near the footwall in chemical traps.Bauxites of all horizons originate from serpentinites as well as from metamorphic and magmatic rocks. This is indicated by a high content of siderophile elements and lithic components. The sequences of regression and transgression and their erosional, sedimentary and geochemical processes are interpreted as cyclic events.  相似文献

Highlights of the previous papers in this series are reviewed. Methodology developed for the MINK study has improved the ability of impacts analysis to deal with questions of (1) spatial and temporal variability in climate change; (2) CO2-enrichment effects; (3) the reactions of complex enterprises (farms and forests) to climate change and their ability to adjust and adapt; and (4) integrated effects on current and, more particularly, on future regional economies. The methodology also provides for systematic study of adjustment and adaptation opportunities and of the inter-industry linkages that determine what the overall impacts on the regional economy might be. The analysis shows that with a 1930s dust bowl climate the region-wide economic impacts would be small, after adjustments in affected sectors. In this final paper we consider whether synergistic effects among sectoral impacts and more severe climate change scenarios might alter this conclusion. The MINK analysis, as is, leads to the conclusion that a strong research capacity will be required to ensure that technologies facilitating adaptation to climate change will be available when needed. The capacity to deal with climate change also requires an open economy allowing for free trade and movement of people and for institutions that protect unpriced environmental values. More severe climate scenarios and negative synergisms can only strengthen these conclusions.  相似文献

The results of shipboard measurements of the modulation characteristics of 3.2 cm radar signals scattered by a rough sea surface at low grazing angles are reported. The experiments were carried out from on-board a drifting research vessel in the Atlantic trade wind zone at wind speeds of 7–10 m s−1 and coinciding directions of the wind and waves. Azimuthal isotropy of the modulation spectra was observed. It is emphasized that the ‘sea surface-scattered signal’ modified modulation transfer function is somewhat larger for horizontal polarization than for vertical polarization. Translated by V.
