Ground-based observations of Venus were made with a 5-cm drive Michelson interferometer during December 1970 and December 1973. The thermal emission spectrum of the central portion of the apparent disk was recorded from 450–1250 cm?1 with an apodized spectral resolution of 0.25 cm?1. All statistically significant sharp line absorption features in the spectrum have been identified with gaseous CO2. Comparison between the observed spectrum and a synthetic spectrum computed from a model atmosphere, assuming gaseous CO2 and a sulfuric acid haze as opacity sources, indicates good agreement. A broad diffuse absorption feature associated with the sulfuric acid haze is evident in the 870- to 930 cm?1 region. With the exception of the rotational lines of the 927-cm?1 CO2 band, the above feature appears as a continuum down to 0.25 cm?1 resolution. In the 750- to 1250-cm?1 range, the spectrum exhibits moderate thermal contrast with maximum brightness temperatures of 234–238°K occurring near 825 cm?1. These temperatures are in general agreement with previous measurements.  相似文献

A theory which is almost fully analytic is used to investigate Jupiter's cooling rate. We find that a simple model of contraction with adiabatic interior structure gives a total cooling time to the present which is in good agreement with the age of the solar system. The interplay between the surface condition and the cooling rate is exhibited and discussed. The current rate of change of the effective temperature is calculated to be ?1°K/0.145×109 yr. Discrepancies with fully numerical investigations of the Jovian age and cooling rate are noted.  相似文献

Auroral ion velocity distributions for a polarization collision model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We have calculated the effect that convection electric fields have on the velocity distribution of auroral ions at the altitudes where the plasma is weakly-ionized and where the various ion-neutral collision frequencies are much smaller than the ion cyclotron frequencies, i.e. between about 130 and 300 km. The appropriate Boltzmann equation has been solved by expanding the ion velocity distribution function in a generalized orthogonal polynomial series about a bi-Maxwellian weight factor. We have retained enough terms in the series expansion to enable us to obtain reliable quantitative results for electric field strengths as large as 90 mV m?1. Although we have considered a range of ion-neutral scattering mechanisms, our main emphasis has been devoted to the long-range polarization interaction. In general, we have found that to lowest order the ion velocity distribution is better represented by a two-temperature or bi-Maxwellian distribution than by a one-temperature Maxwellian, with there being different ion temperatures parallel and perpendicular to the geomagnetic field. However, the departures from this zeroth-order bi-Maxwellian distribution become significant when the ion drift velocity approaches (or exceeds) the neutral thermal speed.  相似文献

Knudsen cell-quadrupole mass spectrometry has been used to quantitatively determine the composition of the vapor phase produced by heating samples of the Holbrook chondrite to 1300 °C. Maximum observed vapor pressures (atm) of metals are 10?5.3 ± 0.3 Na, 10?5.8 ± 0.3 K, 10?5.3 ± 0.3 Fe, and 10?6.6 ± 0.3 Ni at 1200 °C. S2 (with minor SO2), H2O, and CO2 were also observed in the high-temperature gas phase. Release of intrinsically derived volatiles produced abundant vesicles in the heated sample residues. Some possible implications for chondrite evolution are briefly discussed  相似文献

Four new irons are described; Buenaventura (IIIB) from Chihuahua, Mexico: mass 114 kg; Denver City (anomalous) from Texas, USA: mass 26.1 kg; Kinsella (IIIB) from Alberta, Canada: mass 3.7 kg; and Tacoma (IA) from Washington, USA: mass 17 g. Denver City is unique, i.e., not related to any other known iron. Tacoma is the smallest iron meteorite recorded. We have solved the coupled momentum and continuity equations for NO+, O2+, and O+ions in the E- and F-regions of the ionosphere. This theoretical model has enabled us to examine the relative importance of various processes that affect molecular ion densities. We find that transport processes are not important during the day; the molecular ions are in chemical equilibrium at all altitudes. At night, however, both diffusion and vertical drifts induced by winds or electric fields are important in determining molecular ion densities below about 200 km. Molecular ion densities are insensitive to the O+ density distribution and so are little affected by decay of the nocturnal F-region or by processes, such as a protonospheric flux, that retard this decay. The O+ density profile, on the other hand, is insensitive to molecular ion densities, although the O+ diffusion equation is formally coupled to molecular ion densities by the polarization electrostatic field. Nitric oxide plays an important role in determining the NO+ to O2+ ratio in the E-region, particularly at night. Nocturnal sources of ionization are required to maintain the E-region through the night. Vertical velocities induced by expansion and contraction of the neutral atmosphere are too small to affect ion densities at any altitude.  相似文献

Facies analyses of Pleistocene deposits from southern coastal Tanzania (Lindi District) document that sediments formed in a wetland evolving on a coastal terrace in the Lindi Fracture Zone foreland. The exposed succession shows a marked sedimentary change from tidal to terrestrial facies. 14C analyses on gastropod shells indicate the emergence of the Lindi coast at ∼ 44 14C ka BP. Emergence and subsequent elevation of terraces to 21 m above present-day sea level was linked to the falling eustatic sea level prior to the last glacial maximum, and to a periodic elevation due to extensional tectonic episodes in the eastern branch of the East African Rift System (EARS). Since ∼ 44 14C ka BP tectonic uplift at the coast was 80-110 m, comparable to that in the extreme uplift areas of the EARS.  相似文献

1H NMR spectra of humic (HA) and fulvic (FA) acids and their oxidative degradation products are reported. The HA shows the presence of -(CH2)n - CH3 (n > 6) chemical fragments belonging to n-alkanes and/or n-fatty acids physically adsorbed onto the macromolecule structure. These fragments are absent in the FA fraction. Both humic fractions reveal the presence of similar amounts of aromatic protons which partly undergo exchange phenomena. The importance of this experimental observation is discussed. Oxidative degradation seems to cause partial cleavage of aromatic rings, more pronounced in the FA than in the HA. The degraded FA shows a higher total acidity and a higher phenolic OH content than the degraded HA. Both degraded fractions display some sharp singlet signals at 1.9 and 3.9 ppm arising from protons belonging to repetitive chemical fragments probably formed during the oxidation reaction. Tentative assignments of these signals are given. A general analysis of the HA and FA degraded spectra seems to indicate that the chemical fragments which undergo peracetic oxidation are substantially similar. The extent of oxidation of the two humic fractions is different. The HA degradation products reveal the presence of oligomeric structures, whereas the degraded FA appears less resistant to the oxidizing agent.  相似文献

Three natural lawsonites from Syke Rock, Mendocino Co., Reed Ranch, Marin Co., and Blake Gardens, Sonoma Co., all from the Coast Range Region in California, were studied by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction. The samples contain about 0.6, 1.0, and 1.4 wt% of total iron oxide, respectively. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra are consistent with the assumption that high-spin Fe3+ substitutes for Al in the octahedrally coordinated site. The Mössbauer spectrum of lawsonite from Syke Rock exhibits a second doublet with 57Fe hyperfine parameters typical for octahedrally coordinated high-spin Fe2+. Electronic structure calculations in the local spin density approximation yield quadrupole splittings for Fe3+ in quantitative agreement with experiment indicating, however, that substitution of Al by Fe3+ must be accompanied by local distortion around the octahedral site. Model calculations also reproduce the room temperature hyperfine parameters of ferrous high-spin iron assuming the substitution of Ca by Fe2+. However, it cannot be excluded that Fe2+ may occupy a more asymmetric site within the microstructural cavity occupied by Ca and a H2O molecule.  相似文献
