Starbursts are systems with very high star formation rate per unit area. They are the preferred place where massive stars form; the main source of thermal and mechanical heating in the interstellar medium, and the factory where the heavy elements form. Thus, starbursts play an important role in the origin and evolution of galaxies. The similarities between the physical properties of local starbursts and high-z star-forming galaxies, highlight the cosmological relevance of starbursts. On the other hand, nearby starbursts are laboratories where to study violent star formation processes and their interaction with the interstellar and intergalactic media, in detail and deeply. Starbursts are bright at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths, as they are in the far-infrared, due to the ‘picket-fence’ interstellar dust distribution. After the pioneering IUE program, high spatial and spectral resolution UV observations of local starburst galaxies, mainly taken with HST and FUSE, have made relevant contributions to the following issues: The determination of the initial mass function (IMF) in violent star forming systems in low and high metallicity environments, and in dense (e.g. in stellar clusters) and diffuse environments: A Salpeter IMF with high-mass stars constrains well the UV properties. The modes of star formation: Starburst clusters are an important mode of star formation. Super-stellar clusters have properties similar to globular clusters. The role of starbursts in AGN: Nuclear starbursts can dominate the UV light in Seyfert 2 galaxies, having bolometric luminosities similar to the estimated bolometric luminosities of the obscured AGN. The interaction between massive stars and the interstellar and intergalactic media: Outflows in cold, warm and coronal phases leave their imprints on the UV interstellar lines. Outflows of a few hundred km s?1 are ubiquitous phenomena in starbursts. These metal-rich outflows and the ionizing radiation can travel to the halo of galaxies and reach the intergalactic medium. The contribution of starbursts to the reionization of the universe: In the local universe, the fraction of ionizing photons that escape from galaxies and reach the intergalactic medium is of a few percent. However, in high-z star-forming galaxies, the results are more controversial. Despite the very significant progress over the past two decades in our understanding of the starburst phenomenon through the study of the physical processes revealed at satellite UV wavelengths, there are important problems that still need to be solved. High-spatial resolution UV observations of nearby starbursts are crucial to further progress in understanding the violent star formation processes in galaxies, the interaction between the stellar clusters and the interstellar medium, and the variation of the IMF. High-spatial resolution spectra are also needed to isolate the light from the center to the disk in UV luminous galaxies at z = 0.1–0.3 found by GALEX. Thus, a new UV mission furnished with an intermediate spectral resolution long-slit spectrograph with high spatial resolution and high UV sensitivity is required to further progress in the study of starburst galaxies and their impact on the evolution of galaxies. 相似文献

Spatially-explicit estimation of aboveground biomass(AGB) plays an important role to generate action policies focused in climate change mitigation,since carbon(C) retained in the biomass is vital for regulating Earth’s temperature.This work estimates AGB using both chlorophyll(red,near infrared) and moisture(middle infrared) based normalized vegetation indices constructed with MCD43A4 MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) and MOD44B vegetation continuous fields(VCF) data.The study area is located in San Luis Potosí,Mexico,a region that comprises a part of the upper limit of the intertropical zone.AGB estimations were made using both individual tree data from the National Forest Inventory of Mexico and allometric equations reported in scientific literature.Linear and nonlinear(expo-nential) models were fitted to find their predictive potential when using satellite spectral data as explanatory variables.Highly-significant correlations(p = 0.01) were found between all the explaining variables tested.NDVI62,linked to chlorophyll content and moisture stress,showed the highest correlation.The best model(nonlinear) showed an index of fit(Pseudo-r2) equal to 0.77 and a root mean square error equal to 26.00 Mg/ha using NDVI62 and VCF as explanatory variables.Validation correlation coefficients were similar for both models:lin-ear(r = 0.87**) and nonlinear(r = 0.86**). 相似文献

Previous wetland vegetation records from Easter Island showing deforestation and Polynesian agriculture are limited to cores
that rely on pollen, with a single cultigen pollen type identified: Urticaceae/Moraceae, possibly Broussonetia
payrifera (paper mulberry). Here we redress this by also using phytolith and starch analyses on four lake sediment cores on a ~350-m
transect along the southwest edge of Rano Kau, focusing on in-washed basal clayey layers. We also use a new method, Fourier
transform infrared spectroscopy, to positively identify degraded starch collected from sedimentary deposits. The cores are
the first samples recovered from an area in the lake that (a) lies below the relict village of Orongo, (b) is near a section
of the crater believed to be most accessible from the Pacific coast, and (c) is far from the northern crater rim and receives
high solar radiation, a likely benefit for crops of tropical origin. Pollen and phytoliths are abundant in the clayey layers
and sparse in overlying layers of organic lake detritus and living rhizomes. Mixing of core deposits as a result of human
activity has disordered the radiocarbon sequence, precluding development of an reliable chronology. Containing microfossils
of several introduced cultigens, the clayey layers represent gardened terraces that have slumped into the lake. The data indicate
large-scale deforestation and a mixed-crop production system including Broussonetia
papyrifera, Colocasia
esculenta (taro), Dioscorea
alata (greater yam), Ipomoea
batatas (sweet potato), Lagenaria
siceraria (bottle gourd) and Musa (banana) sp. The data show (a) the potential for using the combined analyses to provide direct evidence of Polynesian horticulture
on Easter Island and (b) that the island’s wetlands potentially hold extensive horticultural records. The study highlights
the concept of ‘transported landscapes,’ whereby colonising people replace indigenous forests with artificial, imported agricultural

The Turiec Basin (TB) of Slovakia formed in the Miocene when the West Carpathians escaped from the Alpine region. The 1,250-m-thick
sedimentary Neogene fill of the basin preserved fossil leaves as well as endemic bivalves, gastropods, and ostracodes. The
paleolimnologic changes recorded in the TB infill were derived from the most abundant fossils, the ostracodes. Five contemporaneous
ostracode assemblages within the Late Miocene lacustrine system were distinguished through statistical analysis. These assemblages
have low species similarity, between 2.1 and 24.1%, and are recognized by shape differences among the Candoninae. The ostracode
assemblages, mollusca fossils, and Sr-isotope ratios suggest a low-salinity environment at the beginning of the Late Miocene,
during a brief connection with the Central Paratethys. When the connection ceased, the basin became an isolated freshwater
lake, with five zones differentiated ecologically and bathymetrically using the ostracode assemblages. Taxonomic comparison
of the faunas of the TB and the freshwater to brackish Neogene basins of Europe demonstrates the endemic character of the
TB ostracode fauna. The biologic characteristics of the ostracode families, along with the geology of the lake basin, suggest
that the longevity of the Late Miocene lake probably exceeded 1 Ma. 相似文献

Geochemical records of bivalve shells have been increasingly studied in the last decade to obtain information on climate conditions.
In this paper we present stable isotope compositions of living and prehistoric shells of freshwater mussels (Unionidae) and
their relationships with climate conditions in a shallow lake environment of Lake Balaton, West-Central Hungary. Physical
conditions and stable oxygen isotope compositions of lake water samples were monitored where living bivalves were collected.
Comparisons between seasonal variations in ambient temperature, water composition and within-shell isotopic variations indicate
that the shells of Unio pictorum do reflect local changes at high resolution and thus can be used to study past conditions. Additionally, shells covering
the last two decades were gathered at several locations along the lake in order to determine spatial and temporal variations
in the shells’ isotopic compositions as a function of weather conditions. As an application, prehistoric shells collected
in archaeological excavations were analysed in order to study past environmental variations. Climate variations during the
Late Copper Age (5460–4870 cal. yr BP) have been assumed on the basis of geomorphological and archaeozoological observations
at the site Balatonkeresztúr-Réti-dűlő (south of Lake Balaton), that suggested increasing humidity as a cause of changes in
settlement location and domestic livestock husbandry. Stable carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of prehistoric bivalve
shells were analyzed from excavations representing five archaeological subphases (Boleráz subphase, 5460–5310 cal. yr BP;
two transitional subphases around 5310 cal. yr BP; Early Classic subphase, 5310–5060 cal. yr BP; Late Classic subphase, 5040–4870 cal.
yr BP). The analyses revealed significant negative C and O isotope shifts in the transitional subphases relative to the earlier
and later subphases. The isotopic variations indicate that the local climate became relatively wet and possibly cold around
5310 cal. yr BP, then it returned to drier (and likely warmer) conditions during the Classic subphases. This interpretation
is in agreement with previous studies on climate changes related to the “5.3 ky event” in the European continental area and
the North Atlantic Region, indicating an Atlantic influence in the Carpathian Basin. 相似文献

The Pipanaco Basin, in the southern margin of the Andean Puna plateau at ca. 28°SL, is one of the largest and highest intermontane basins within the northernmost Argentine broken foreland. With a surface elevation >1000 m above sea level, this basin represents a strategic location to understand the subsidence and subsequent uplift history of high‐elevation depositional surfaces within the distal Andean foreland. However, the stratigraphic record of the Pipanaco Basin is almost entirely within the subsurface, and no geophysical surveys have been conducted in the region. A high‐resolution gravity study has been designed to understand the subsurface basin geometry. This study, together with stratigraphic correlations and flexural and backstripping analysis, suggests that the region was dominated by a regional subsidence episode of ca. 2 km during the Miocene‐Pliocene, followed by basement thrusting and ca. 1–1.5 km of sediment filling within restricted intermontane basin between the Pliocene‐Pleistocene. Based on the present‐day position of the basement top as well as the Neogene‐Present sediment thicknesses across the Sierras Pampeanas, which show slight variations along strike, sediment aggradation is not the most suitable process to account for the increase in the topographic level of the high‐elevation, close‐drainage basins of Argentina. The close correlation between the depth to basement and the mean surface elevations recorded in different swaths indicates that deep‐seated geodynamic process affected the northern Sierras Pampeanas. Seismic tomography, as well as a preliminary comparison between the isostatic and seismic Moho, suggests a buoyant lithosphere beneath the northern Sierras Pampeanas, which might have driven the long‐wavelength rise of this part of the broken foreland after the major phase of deposition in these Andean basins. 相似文献

Elevation gradients of European climate change in the regional climate model COSMO-CLM 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A transient climate scenario experiment of the regional climate model COSMO-CLM is analyzed to assess the elevation dependency
of 21st century European climate change. A focus is put on near-surface conditions. Model evaluation reveals that COSMO-CLM
is able to approximately reproduce the observed altitudinal variation of 2 m temperature and precipitation in most regions
and most seasons. The analysis of climate change signals suggests that 21st century climate change might considerably depend
on elevation. Over most parts of Europe and in most seasons, near-surface warming significantly increases with elevation.
This is consistent with the simulated changes of the free-tropospheric air temperature, but can only be fully explained by
taking into account regional-scale processes involving the land surface. In winter and spring, the anomalous high-elevation
warming is typically connected to a decrease in the number of snow days and the snow-albedo feedback. Further factors are
changes in cloud cover and soil moisture and the proximity of low-elevation regions to the sea. The amplified warming at high
elevations becomes apparent during the first half of the 21st century and results in a general decrease of near-surface lapse
rates. It does not imply an early detection potential of large-scale temperature changes. For precipitation, only few consistent
signals arise. In many regions precipitation changes show a pronounced elevation dependency but the details strongly depend
on the season and the region under consideration. There is a tendency towards a larger relative decrease of summer precipitation
at low elevations, but there are exceptions to this as well. 相似文献

It has been suggested that climate change might modify the occurrence rate of large storms and their magnitude, due to a higher availability of energy in the atmosphere-ocean system. Forecasting physical models are commonly used to assess the effects. No one expects the physical model forecasts for one specific day to be accurate; we consider them to be good if they adequately describe the statistical characteristics of the climate. The Peak-Over-Threshold (POT) method is a common way to statistically treat the occurrence and magnitude of hazardous events: here, occurrence is modelled as a Poisson process and magnitude over a given threshold is assumed to follow a Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD). We restrict our attention to Weibull-related GPDs, which exhibit an upper bound, to comply with the fact that any physical process has a finite upper limit. This contribution uses this framework to model time series of log-significant wave-height constructed joining quasi-collocated hindcast data and buoy measurements. Two of the POT model parameters (inhomogeneous Poisson rate and logarithm of the GPD shape parameter are considered to be a combination of a linear function of time and a series indicator function. The third parameter, logarithm of the GPD upper bound, is considered to have only a series indicator component. The resulting parameters are estimated using Bayesian methods. Using hincast and buoy series, the time span of the data set is extended, enhancing the precision of statistical results about potential linear changes. Simultaneously the statistical behaviour of hincast and buoy series are compared. At the same time, the step function allows to calibrate the statistical reproduction of storms by hindcasting. 相似文献

Downslope windstorms at Kvísker in Southeast Iceland are explored using a mesoscale model, observations and numerical analysis of the atmosphere. Two different types of gravity-wave induced windstorms are identified. At the surface, their main difference is in the horizontal extent of the lee-side accelerated flow. Type S (Short) is a westerly windstorm, which is confined to the lee-slopes of Mount ?r?faj?kull, while a Type E (Extended) windstorm occurs in the northerly flow and is not confined to the lee-slopes but continues some distance downstream of the mountain. The Type S windstorm may be characterized as a more pure gravity-wave generated windstorm than the Type E windstorm which bears a greater resemblance to local flow acceleration described by hydraulic theory. The low-level flow in the Type E windstorm is of arctic origin and close to neutral with an inversion well above the mountain top level. At middle tropospheric levels there is a reverse vertical windshear. The Type S windstorm occurs in airmasses of southerly origin. It also has a well-mixed, but a shallower boundary-layer than the Type E windstorms. Aloft, the winds increase with height and there is an amplified gravity wave. Climate projections indicate a possible decrease in windstorm frequency up to the year 2050. 相似文献
