This paper presents the major characteristics of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation model. The model components and the coupling methodology are described, as well as the main characteristics of the climatology and interannual variability. The model results of the standard version used for IPCC climate projections, and for intercomparison projects like the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP 2) are compared to those with a higher resolution in the atmosphere. A focus on the North Atlantic and on the tropics is used to address the impact of the atmosphere resolution on processes and feedbacks. In the North Atlantic, the resolution change leads to an improved representation of the storm-tracks and the North Atlantic oscillation. The better representation of the wind structure increases the northward salt transports, the deep-water formation and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. In the tropics, the ocean–atmosphere dynamical coupling, or Bjerknes feedback, improves with the resolution. The amplitude of ENSO (El Niño-Southern oscillation) consequently increases, as the damping processes are left unchanged.  相似文献

Regional growth models often emphasize the importance of research and development activities leading to technological progress. The role of knowledge production and spatiotemporal spillover effects is investigated using a space-time panel data set covering 49 US states over the period 1994–2005. The aim is to test for the existence of regional knowledge spillovers in the context of a space-time dynamic suggested by the knowledge production function. A space-time specification is set forth that can be applied to panel data models that include random effects. We compare alternative models that have been proposed in the panel data literature to provide a better understanding of how new ideas diffuse across space and time. The results indicate that the space-time panel data set is consistent with the presence of strong spatiotemporal regional spillovers of knowledge. The empirical findings are interpreted in light of the existing theoretical and empirical literature on endogenous growth.  相似文献

The Meliata unit represents a mélange-like accretionary wedge, containing blueschist facies tectonic blocks and slices in a Triassic and Jurassic sedimentary matrix. The blueschist facies rocks are tectonic remnants of the subducted parts of the Meliata-Hallstatt branch of the Tethys. The phyllosilicate assemblages in very low-grade metapelites represent metastable disequilibrium stages which the assemblages have reached during reaction progress. Therefore, temperature and pressure values of low-T metamorphism of the sedimentary series and the late stages of decompressional cooling of blueschist facies rocks, obtained by phyllosilicate "crystallinity", chlorite thermometric and white K-mica geobarometric methods, can be regarded as semiquantitative estimates. However, results of chlorite–white mica thermobarometry suggest that local equilibrium was approached at a microscopic scale. For deciphering the age relations of prograde and retrograde events, K–Ar isotope geochronological methods were applied. The sedimentary series and related basalts of the Meliata unit experienced high-T anchizonal prograde regional metamorphism, the temperature and pressure of which can vary between ca. 280 and 350 °C and ca. 2.5 and 5 kbar. White K-mica b geobarometry suggests possible minimal pressures of ca. 1.5 to 3 kbar. The mylonitic retrogression of blueschist facies phyllites is characterised by 340 °C and 4 kbar (minimal P). The low-T prograde metamorphism was synchronous with the retrograde metamorphism of the blueschists. The ages of these two events may be between ca. 150 and 120 Ma, culminating most probably at around 140–145 Ma. Thus, the Upper Jurassic (lowermost Cretaceous) very low-grade metamorphism of the Meliata unit is younger than the subduction-related, 160–155 Ma blueschist facies event, and definitely older than the Cretaceous (100–90 Ma) metamorphism of the footwall Gemer Palaeozoic.  相似文献

Inverse modeling is a useful tool in ground water flow modeling studies. The most frequent difficulties encountered when using this technique are the lack of conditioning information (e.g., heads and transmissivities), the uncertainty in available data, and the nonuniqueness of the solution. These problems can be addressed and quantified through a stochastic Monte Carlo approach. The aim of this work was to compare the applicability of two stochastic inverse modeling approaches in a field-scale application. The multi-scaling (MS) approach uses a downscaling parameterization procedure that is not based on geostatistics. The pilot point (PP) approach uses geostatistical random fields as initial transmissivity values and an experimental variogram to condition the calibration. The studied area (375 km2) is part of a regional aquifer, northwest of Montreal in the St. Lawrence lowlands (southern Québec). It is located in limestone, dolomite, and sandstone formations, and is mostly a fractured porous medium. The MS approach generated small errors on heads, but the calibrated transmissivity fields did not reproduce the variogram of observed transmissivities. The PP approach generated larger errors on heads but better reproduced the spatial structure of observed transmissivities. The PP approach was also less sensitive to uncertainty in head measurements. If reliable heads are available but no transmissivities are measured, the MS approach provides useful results. If reliable transmissivities with a well inferred spatial structure are available, then the PP approach is a better alternative. This approach however must be used with caution if measured transmissivities are not reliable.  相似文献

The South Armorican Shear Zone consists of a set of faults that runs across the southern Armorican Massif and extends eastwards to the Massif Central. One of its branches, the Cholet Shear Zone of South Brittany, can be correlated with the North-Millevaches–La Courtine Shear Zone in the Massif Central. It was active immediately after the regional Frasnian anatexis (372–368 Ma) as a right-lateral strike-slip fault. The horizontal offset, which can be estimated between 110 and 170 km, was achieved before the emplacement of non-deformed Late Tournaisian calc-alkaline and peraluminous granites (355–350 Ma). This newly established age of activity (Fammenian–Tournaisian) of the Cholet–La Courtine Shear Zone (CCSZ) has to be taken into account in geodynamical reconstructions of the Variscan belt of western Europe. Ice-free glacial northern Asia due to dust deposition on snow   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 kyr BP), no large ice sheets were present in northern Asia, while northern Europe and North America (except Alaska) were heavily glaciated. We use a general circulation model with high regional resolution and a new parameterization of snow albedo to show that the ice-free conditions in northern Asia during the LGM are favoured by strong glacial dust deposition on the seasonal snow cover. Our climate model simulations indicate that mineral dust deposition on the snow surface leads to low snow albedo during the melt season. This, in turn, caused enhanced snow melt and therefore favoured snow-free peak summer conditions over almost the entire Asian continent during the LGM, whereas perennial snow cover is simulated over a large part of eastern Siberia when glacial dust deposition is not taken into account.  相似文献

A modified ceilometer has been used during the second Intensive Observation Period (IOP) of the “Expérience sur Site pour COntraindre les Modèles de Pollution atmosphériques et de Transport d'Émission” (ESCOMPTE) to perform continuous remote observations of aerosol accumulations in the first 3 km of the atmosphere. These observations encompassed an episode of intense particulate and photochemical pollution. The submicronic particles density, measured at an altitude of 600 m, went from a very low point of a few tens of particles per cubic centimeter (at the end of a Mistral episode in the free atmosphere) to a high point of more than 4500 particles per cubic centimeter (when pollutants were trapped by thermal inversions).The main result is that this instrument enables a fine documentation of the mixing layer height and of aerosol particles stratifications and circulation. Airborne aerosol measurements have been made above the mountainous region of Mérindol in order to validate in situ the remote sensing measurements. Ozone measurements near the summit of the mountains as well as in the valley were performed in order to correlate aerosol accumulation and ozone concentration. As a notable example, the two-layer aerosol stratification seen in the first 2 days of IOP 2b in that part of the ESCOMPTE domain confirms the results of another team which used backtrajectories. The low-altitude pollution for this timeframe had a local origin (the Fos industrial area), whereas above 500 m, the air masses had undergone regional-scale transport (from north-eastern Spain).The second major result is the highlighting of a pattern, in sea breeze conditions and in this part of the ESCOMPTE experiment zone, of nocturnal aerosol accumulation at an altitude of between 500 and 2000 m, followed by high ozone concentration the next day.  相似文献
