At the end of the Permian, at the boundary between the Paleozoic and Mesozoic (251.0 ± 0.4 Ma), the largest mass extinction
of organisms on the Earth occurred. Up to 96% of the species of marine invertebrates and ∼70% of the terrestrial vertebrates
died off. A lot of factors were suggested and substantiated to explain this mass mortality, such as the disappearance of environmental
niches in the course of the amalgamation of the continental plates into Pangea, sea level fluctuations, anoxia, an elevated
CO2 content, H2S intoxication, volcanism, methane discharge from gas-hydrates, climate changes, impact events (collisions with large asteroids),
or combinations of many of these reasons. Some of these factors are in subordination to others, while others are independent.
Almost all of these factors developed relatively slowly and could not cause the sudden mass mortality of organisms globally.
It could have happened when large asteroids, whose craters have been discovered lately, fell to the Earth. It is suggested
that the impact events “finished off” the already suppressed biota. A simultaneous change in many of the factors responsible
for the biodiversity, including those not connected in a cause-and-effect relationship, proves the existence of a common extrater-restrial
cause that affected both the changes in the internal and external geospheres and the activation of asteroid attacks (the Sun’s
transit of spiral arms of our galaxy, the Sun’s oscillations perpendicularly to the galactic plane, etc). 相似文献

We generalize the method used for the evaluation of the coefficients of horizontal diffusion of Brownian particles to the
nonstationary case, as applied to the drifter experiments. The limits of applicability of the proposed procedure are determined.
The coefficients of horizontal exchange are computed with an aim to compare them with the estimates obtained earlier by using
the generalized Taylor theory. The mutual agreement of these estimates is demonstrated. It is shown that the difference between
the values of the zonal (0.19⋅104 m2/sec) and meridional (0.11⋅104 m2/sec) coefficients of exchange in the Black Sea cannot be explained by the effect of increase in the longitudinal component
of pulsations of the velocity as a result of its transverse shear relative to the mean current. A conclusion is made that

The trophic relationships of the phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Vistula Lagoon in 2008?C2010 were investigated. In the current period, the lagoon is an eutrophic water body with summer blooms of blue-green algae. The trophic level of the Vistula Lagoon influences both the composition and quantitative characteristics of the communities of phytoplankton and zooplankton and the trophic relationships between them. In the analyzed period, the consumption of phytoplankton by the zooplankton on the average in the growing season was 28%, which is 1.5 times higher than in the late 1970s. The high grazing pressure of the zooplankton on the phytoplankton reduces its biomass, production, and the intensity of the blooming by the blue-green algae in the Vistula Lagoon. 相似文献

From long-term observations of ozone evolution in the stratosphere of the Kola Peninsula in the 2002/2003 winter, the rates of chemical destruction of ozone and its net loss at isentropic levels of 530 K (an altitude of about 22 km) and 465 K (an altitude of about 19 km) ar evaluated with consideration for diabatic descent of air masses. These rates were ?18.6±3.3 and ?14.3±2.9 ppb/day and the net loss of ozone due to its chemical destruction over the period from December 1, 2002, to March 5, 2003, reached 1.77±0.33 ppm and 1.36±0.29 ppm, respectively. At the lower level, these data are in satisfactory agreement (to within measurement errors) with other measurements that were taken at that time. At a potential-temperature level of 530 K, the ozone loss in the 2002/2003 season evaluated from our data and from similar microwave measurements performed in Kiruna (Sweden) virtually coincides and testifies to the fact that the net loss increases with altitude. These inferences are inconsistent with the results obtained with the Match technique and the method of averaging over a vortex, which indicate that the ozone loss decreases with altitude. However, since polar stratospheric clouds were detected regularly in December and early January at levels up to 600 K or higher, it may be suggested that the ozone loss at these altitudes can be comparable to the values found for isentropic levels of 465 to 475 K. 相似文献

The results of experiments on the physical modeling of long-range infrasonic propagation in the atmosphere are given. Such modeling is based on the possible coincidence between the forms of the vertical profiles of the effective sound speed stratification in the atmospheric boundary layer (between 0 and 600 m for the case under consideration) and in the atmosphere as a whole (from the land surface up to thermospheric heights (about 150 km)). The source of acoustic pulses was an oscillator of detonation type. Owing to the detonation of a gas mixture of air (or oxygen) and propane, this generator was capable of producing short, powerful (the maximum acoustic pressure was on the order of 30 to 60 Pa at a distance of 50 to 100 m from the oscillator), and sufficiently stable acoustic pulses with a spectral maximum at frequencies of 40 to 60 Hz and a pulsing period of 20 to 30 s. The sites of acoustic-signal recording were located at different distances (up to 6.5 km) from the source and in different azimuthal directions. The temperature and wind stratifications were monitored in real time during the experiments with an acoustic locator—a sodar—and a temperature profiler. The data on the physical modeling of long-range sound propagation in the atmosphere are analyzed to verify the physical and mathematical models of predicting acoustic fields in the inhomogeneous moving atmosphere on the basis of the parabolic equation and the method of normal waves. A satisfactory agreement between calculated and experimental data is obtained. One more task was to compare the theoretical relations between variations in the azimuths and angles of tilting of sound rays about the horizon and the parameters of anisotropic turbulence in the lower troposphere and stratosphere with the experimental data. A theoretical interpretation of the experimental results is proposed on the basis of the theory of anisotropic turbulence in the atmosphere. The theoretical and experimental results are compared, and a satisfactory agreement between these results is noted. 相似文献

The photosynthetic properties of phytoplankton populations as related to physical–chemical variations on small temporal and spatial scales and to phytoplankton size structure and pigment spectra were investigated in the Northern Adriatic Sea off the Po River delta in late winter 1997. Large diatoms (fucoxanthin) dominated the phytoplankton in the coastal area whereas small phytoflagellates (mainly 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, chlorophyll b, 19′-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin) occurred outside the front. The front was defined by the steep gradient in density in the surface layer separating low-salinity coastal waters from the offshore waters.Physical features of the area strongly influenced phytoplankton biomass distributions, composition and size structure. After high volumes of Po River discharge several gyres and meanders occurred in the area off the river delta in February. Decreasing river discharge and the subsequent disappearance of the gyres and the spreading dilution of the river plume was observed in March. The dynamic circulation of February resulted in high photosynthetic capacity of the abundant phytoplankton population (>3.40 mg m−3). In March, the slow circulation and an upper low-salinity water layer, segregated from the deeper layers, resulted in lack of renewal of this water mass. The huge phytoplankton biomass, up to 15.77 mg chl a m−3, became nutrient depleted and showed low photosynthetic capacity. In February, an exceptionally high PmaxB, 20.11 mg C (mg chl a)−1 h−1 was recorded in the Po River plume area and average PmaxB was three-fold in February as compared to the March recordings, 10.50 mg C (mg chl a)−1 h−1 and 3.22 mg C (mg chl a)−1 h−1, respectively.The extreme variability and values of phytoplankton biomass in the innermost plume area was not always reflected in primary production. Modeling of circulation patterns and water mass resilience in the area will help to predict phytoplankton response and biomass distributions. In the frontal area, despite a considerable variability in environmental conditions, our findings have shown that the phytoplankton assemblages will compensate for nutrient depression and hydrographic constraints, by means of size and taxonomic composition and, as a result, the variability in the photosynthetic capacity was much less pronounced than that observed for other parameters. 相似文献

The spectral aerosol-extinction coefficients (SAECs) obtained from SAGE III measurements are used to study the physical and integral microphysical characteristics of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). Different criteria for PSC identification from SAEC measurements are considered and analyzed based on model and field measurements. An intercomparison of them is performed, and the agreement and difference of the results obtained with the use of different criteria are shown. A new criterion is proposed for PSC identification, which is based on the estimate of how close the measured vector of the spectral attenuation coefficient is to a model distribution of the PSC ensemble. On the basis of different criteria, cases of PSCs are isolated from all SAGE III observations (over 30000). All selection criteria lead to a qualitatively and quantitatively similar space-time distribution of the regions of PSC localization. The PSCs observed in the region accessible to SAGE III measurements are localized in the latitudinal zones 65°–80° in the Northern Hemisphere and 45°–60° in the Southern Hemisphere during the winter-spring period. In the Northern Hemisphere, PSCs are observed within the longitudinal zone 120° W–100° E with the maximum frequency of PSC observation in the vicinity of the Greenwich meridian. In the Southern Hemisphere, the region of PSC observation is almost the same in longitude but with a certain shift in the maximum frequency of PSC observation to the west. This maximum is observed in the vicinity of 40°W, and the region of usual PSC observation is the neighborhood of 60° of the maximum’s longitude. The physical parameters of PSCs are estimated: the mean heights of the lower and upper boundaries of PSCs are 19.5 and 21.9 km, respectively, and the mean cloud temperature is 191.8 K. The integral microphysical parameters of PSCs are estimated: the total surface of NAT particles S NAT = 0.41 μm2/cm3; the total volume of NAT particles V NAT = 1.1 μm3/cm3; and, for all aerosol and cloud particles together, S is 2.9 ± 1.5 at a standard deviation of 2.7 μm2/cm3 and V is 2.8 ± 1.5 at a standard deviation of 4.2 μm3/cm3. A high frequency of PSC occurrence and high values of S and V in PSCs both for all particles and for NAT particles have been noted in January–February 2005 as compared to the rest of the period of SAGE III measurements for 2002–2005. 相似文献
