Late pleistocene (Devensian) glaciofluvial outwash at Banc-y-Warren,near Cardigan (west Wales)

On the southwest-facing slopes of a bedrock ridge lying between Cardigan Bay to the north and the Afon Teifi to the south stands a group of hills in which 30-35 m of cross-laminated and parallel-laminated sands with lenticular upward-fining gravel sequences are overlain by 10-12 m of gravel in a single foreset bed. The sediments mantle a surface of till sloping gently toward the southwest, were transported toward the southwest (across one margin of the Afon Teifi valley), and were cut by a system of densely arranged conjugate normal faults striking northwest-southeast. The lenticular gravels and fault system suggest that the deposits accumulated as a glaciofluvial outwash spread, and on top of an ice-lobe that became isolated in the Teifi valley during the downwasting of a glacier which had occupied Cardigan Bay and much of the country to the south. The large gravel foresets capping the succession are the only indication at Banc-y-Warren of the former existence of a lake, but neither a large nor deep body of water need be envisaged.     

Suppositions for the Comparison of Infrared Spectra from Terrestrial Silicates with Interstellar Spectra and the Selection of Suitable Silicates (Mitteilungen der Universitäts-Sternwarte zu Jena Nr. 149)

The influence of potassium bromide on the bands near 10 μm, 18 μm and 33 μm was calculated for any silicate. The wavelength shift, the deepening, and the broadening of the bands were calculated for different band's depths of each band. The results were applied on the investigation of an extensive catalogue of silicate spectra, which were got on the basis of the KBr pressing technique too. So it was possible to picle out those silicates from the variety of silicates, which are probable candidates for the interstellar silicate component.     

Use of a problem-oriented database for statistical analysis of the hydrochemical characteristics of the redox layer of the Black Sea

A problem-oriented database (PODB) was developed for the statistical analysis of the hydrochemical characteristics of the redox layer of the Black Sea. The paper describes the features of the PODB, including the algorithm of interpolation and the location of the levels of the appearance and disappearance of hydrochemical parameters (the so-called onset levels) based on Akima’s spline. The application of the PODB allowed us to obtain a series of biogeochemical estimates, in particular, (1) to reveal the constancy of the vertical gradients of the hydrochemical parameters at selected density levels; (2) to calculate the seasonal variability of the degree of manifestation of the phosphate minimum in the near-shore and open sea areas; and (3) to calculate the interannual variability of the level of the disappearance of the hydrogen sulfide, ammonium, total manganese, and methane, as well as the oxygen content in the cold intermediate layer, and to find out their relations with the climatic variations.

Analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons in mangrove sediments of Red Sea of Yemen

A field work has been carried out to identify the occurrence of oil and oil products pollution in mangrove sediment from Red Sea of Yemen. The concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons is from 700ng/g at Kamaran Island station to 400 ng/g at Al-Hodiedah station, and the total organic carbon （TOC） in samples ranges from 0. 07% at Dhubab station to 0. 03% at Kamaran Island station. This pollution is as a result of localized oil pollution and/or heavy ship traffic in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.     

On the Widths of Dust Layers in Galaxies (Mitteilungen der Universitätssternwarte Jena Nr. 156)

From prints of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey the widths of the equatorial dust layers of a sample of 39 galaxies seen on edge are obtained to be in the range 500 ≤ D ≤ 1600 pc. The width of a dust layer seems to be correlated with the luminosity of the galaxy. The dust lanes of field galaxies are obviously broader than those of the members of the Virgo cluster. This result may be interpreted as a dust deficiency caused by stripping of interstellar matter resulting from galactic collisions and interaction of the galaxies with the intracluster medium.
