Of all terrestrial ecosystems, the productivity of deserts has been suggested to be the most responsive to increasing atmospheric CO2. The extent to which this prediction holds will depend in part on plant responses to elevated CO2under the highly variable conditions characteristic of arid regions. The photosynthetic responses ofLarrea tridentata , an evergreen shrub, to a step-increase in atmospheric CO2(to 550 μmolmol−1) were examined in the field using Free-Air CO2Enrichment (FACE) under seasonally varying moisture conditions. Elevated CO2substantially increased net assimilation rate (Anet) in Larrea during both moist and dry periods of the potential growing season, while stomatal conductance (gs) did not differ between elevated and ambient CO2treatments. Seasonal and diurnal gas exchange dynamics in elevated CO2mirrored patterns in ambient CO2, indicating that elevated CO2did not extend photosynthetic activity longer into the dry season or during more stressful times of the day. Net assimilation vs. internal CO2(A/Ci) responses showed no evidence of photosynthetic down-regulation during the dry season. In contrast, after significant autumn rains, Amax(the CO2saturated rate of photosynthesis) and CE (carboxylation efficiency) were lower in Larrea under elevated CO2. In situ chlorophyll fluorescence estimation ofLarrea Photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm) responded more to water limitation than to elevated CO2. These findings suggest that predictions regarding desert plant responses to elevated CO2should account for seasonal patterns of photosynthetic regulatory responses, which may vary across species and plant functional types.  相似文献

Among the variability behaviours exhibited by neutron star systems are the so-called 'horizontal branch oscillations' (HBO, with frequencies ≈50 Hz), the 'lower-frequency kHz quasi-periodic oscillation' (QPO) and the 'upper-frequency kHz QPO', with the latter two features being separated in frequency by an amount comparable to, but varying slightly from, the suspected spin-frequency of the neutron star. Recently, Psaltis, Belloni & van der Klis have suggested that there exists a correlation between these three frequencies that, when certain identifications of variability features are made, even encompasses black hole sources. We consider this hypothesis by reanalysing a set of GX 339−4 observations. The power spectral density (PSD) constructed from a composite of seven separate, but very similar, observations shows evidence for three broad peaks in the PSD. If the peak frequencies of these features are identified with QPO, then their frequencies approximately fit the correlations suggested by Psaltis, Belloni, & van der Klis. We also reanalyse a Cyg X-1 observation and show that the suggested QPO correlation may also hold, but that complications arise when the QPOs (which, in reality, are fairly broad features) are considered as a function of energy band. These fits suggest the existence of at least three separate, independent physical processes in the accretion flow, a hypothesis that is also supported by consideration of the Fourier frequency-dependent time lags and coherence function between variability in different energy bands. If these variability features have a common origin in neutron star and black hole systems, then 'beat frequency models' of kHz QPO in neutron star systems are called into question.  相似文献

LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 are the only known persistent stellar-mass black-hole candidates that have almost always shown spectra that are dominated by a soft, thermal component. We present here results from 170-ks-long Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE ) observations of these objects, taken in 1996 December, where their spectra can be described by a disc blackbody plus an additional soft     high-energy power law (detected up to energies of 50 keV in LMC X-3). These observations, as well as archival Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics ( ASCA ) observations, constrain any narrow Fe line present in the spectra to have an equivalent width ≲90 eV. Stronger, broad lines (≈150 eV EW,     are permitted. We also study the variability of LMC X-1. Its X-ray power spectral density (PSD) is approximately proportional to     between 10−3 and 0.3 Hz with a root-mean-square (rms) variability of ≈7 per cent. At energies >5 keV, the PSD shows evidence of a break at     possibly indicating an outer disc radius of ≲1000  GM c 2 in this likely wind-fed system. Furthermore, the coherence function     a measure of the degree of linear correlation between variability in the >5 keV band and variability in the lower energy bands, is extremely low (≲50 per cent). We discuss the implications of these observations for the mechanisms that might be producing the soft and hard X-rays in these systems.  相似文献

In order to detect hydraulic and geochemical impact on the groundwater directly above the CO2 storage reservoir at the Ketzin pilot site continuous monitoring using an observation well is carried out. The target depth (446 m below ground level, bgl.) of the well is the Exter formation (Upper Triassic, Rhaetian) which is the closest permeable stratigraphic overlying formation to the CO2 storage reservoir (630–636 m bgl. at well location). The monitoring concept comprises evaluation of hydraulic conditions, temperature, water chemistry, gas geochemistry and δ13C values. This is achieved by a tubing inserted inside the well with installed pressure sensors and a U-tube sampling system so that pumping tests or additional wireline logging can be carried out simultaneously with monitoring. The aquifer was examined using a pump test. The observation well is hydraulically connected to the regional aquifer system and the permeability of about 1.8 D is comparatively high. Between Sept. 2011 and Oct. 2012, a pressure increase of 7.4 kPa is observed during monitoring under environmental conditions. Drilling was carried out with drilling mud on carbonate basis. The concentration of residual drilling mud decreases during the pump test, but all samples show a residual concentration of drilling mud. The formation fluid composition is recalculated with PHREEQC and is comparable to the literature values for the Exter formation. The gas partial pressure is below saturation at standard conditions and the composition is dominated by N2 similar to the underlying storage reservoir prior to CO2 injection. The impact of residual drilling mud on dissolved inorganic carbon and the respective δ13C values decreases during the monitoring period. The pristine isotopic composition cannot be determined due to calcite precipitation. No conclusive results indicate a leakage from the underlying CO2 storage reservoir.  相似文献

Computational power poses heavy limitations to the achievable problem size for Kriging. In separate research lines, Kriging algorithms based on FFT, the separability of certain covariance functions, and low-rank representations of covariance functions have been investigated, all three leading to drastic speedup factors. The current study combines these ideas, and so combines the individual speedup factors of all ideas. This way, we reduce the mathematics behind Kriging to a computational complexity of only $\mathcal{O}(dL^{*} \log L^{*})$ , where L ? is the number of points along the longest edge of the involved lattice of estimation points, and d is the physical dimensionality of the lattice. For separable (factorized) covariance functions, the results are exact, and nonseparable covariance functions can be approximated well through sums of separable components. Only outputting the final estimate as an explicit map causes computational costs of $\mathcal{O}(n)$ , where n is the number of estimation points. In illustrative numerical test cases, we achieve speedup factors up to 108 (eight orders of magnitude), and we can treat problem sizes of up to 15 trillion and two quadrillion estimation points for Kriging and spatial design, respectively, within seconds on a contemporary desktop computer. The current study assumes second-order stationarity and simple Kriging on a regular, equispaced lattice, without working with restricted neighborhoods. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play important roles in ecosystem processes. However, little is known about AMF abundance in arid, nutrient-poor environments like the Mojave Desert of North America. We conducted two AMF studies: one examined AMF responses to elevated atmospheric CO2 at the Nevada Desert FACE (Free-Air-Carbon dioxide-Enrichment) Facility (NDFF), and the second examined seasonal dynamics at nearby sites. In both studies, AMF measurements (root colonization, extra-radical hyphal [ERH] length, and two measures of glomalin-related soil protein [GRSP]) and environmental factors (root length, soil water content, and precipitation) were measured across microsites (beneath shrubs, shrub interspaces) for two species (Larrea tridentata, Ambrosia dumosa). Elevated CO2 did not significantly affect AMF measurements. Other NDFF studies show no change in fine root production under elevated CO2 but show increased available nitrogen. We infer that additional fixed carbon under elevated CO2 is not allocated to soil resource foraging. However, AMF varied seasonally. ERH seasonally declined across species and microsites, but GRSP declined only beneath L. tridentata. Our results combined with previous results indicate that drought negatively affects AMF root colonization. Robust inter-relationship among AMF measurements only occurred between the two measures of GRSP, indicating that resources are independently allocated to different AMF structures.  相似文献

  The diffusivity of water has been investigated for a haplogranitic melt of anhydrous composition Qz28Ab38Or34 (in wt %) at temperatures of 800–1200°C and at pressures of 0.5–5.0 kbar using the diffusion couple technique. Water contents of the starting glass pairs varied between 0 and 9 wt %. Concentration-distance profiles for the different water species (molecular water and hydroxyl groups) were determined by near-infrared microspectroscopy. Because the water speciation of the melt is not quenchable (Nowak 1995; Nowak and Behrens 1995; Shen and Keppler 1995), the diffusivities of the individual species can not be evaluated directly from these profiles. Therefore, apparent chemical diffusion coefficients of water (D water) were determined from the total water profiles using a modified Boltzmann-Matano analysis. The diffusivity of water increases linearly with water content <3 wt % but exponentially at higher water contents. The activation energy decreases from 64 ± 10 kJ/mole for 0.5 wt % water to 46 ± 5 kJ/mole for 4 wt % water but remains constant at higher water contents. A small but systematic decrease of D water with pressure indicates an average activation volume of about 9 cm3/mole. in the ranges 1073 K ≤ T ≤ 1473 K; 0.5 kbar ≤ P≤ 5␣kbar; 0.5 wt % ≤ C water ≤ 6 wt %. The absence of alkali concentration gradients in the glasses after the experiments shows that interdiffusion of alkali and H+ or H3O+ gives no contribution to the transport of water in aluminosilicate melts. The H/D interdiffusion coefficients obtained at 800°C and 5 kbar using glass pieces with almost the same molar content of either water or deuterium oxide are almost identical to the chemical diffusivities of water. Dissolution?Cprecipitation phenomena induced by CO2 injection to Altmark Permian sandstone were observed through laboratory experiments carried out under simulated reservoir conditions (125?°C and 50 bars of pressure). The rock sample was collected from the Altmark gas reservoir, which is being considered for enhanced gas recovery. Two sets of experiments were performed with pulverized rock samples in a closed batch reactor with either pure water (run 1) or 3?M aqueous NaCl solution (run 2) and reacted with injected CO2 for 3, 5, and 9?days. The liquid samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and total reflection X-ray fluorescence, where the latter proved to be a feasible alternative to conventional analytical techniques, especially since only small sample volumes (about 10???l) are needed. Chemical analysis for both fluids (water and NaCl brine) indicated a significant dissolution of calcite and anhydrite in the solution, which might be a crucial process during CO2 injection. The brine solution enhanced the dissolution of calcite and anhydrite compared to pure water at the beginning of the reaction. Moreover, the progressive higher Si4+/Al3+ molar ratios (in average by a factor of 3) in the brine experiments indicated quartz dissolution. Thermodynamic calculations of mineral saturation indices highlighted the dissolution of the Ca-bearing minerals, which was in agreement with experimental results. Modeling enabled an evaluation of the dissolution processes of minerals in a low-salinity region, yet hindrances to model more saline conditions emphasize the need for further laboratory studies in order to parameterize models for deep aquifer conditions.  相似文献
