By applying our understanding of lunar space weathering processes, we can predict how space weathering will effect the soil properties on Mercury. The study examines results of dynamic downscaling of two global analyses: the National Center for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis II and the Global Forecast System final analysis (FNL). Downscaling to a 0.5° grid over West Africa and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean is accomplished by each of two regional models, the Regional Model, version 3 (RM3) of the Center for Climate Systems Research and the Weather, Research and Forecasting model (WRF). Simulations are for September 2006, the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) Special Observing Period #3 (SOP-3). The aim of this study is to exploit the increased spatial detail in the simulations and representations of climate fields by the regional models to analyze meteorological systems within the SOP-3 area of interest and time frame. In particular, the paper focuses on the regional models’ representations of the structure and movement of a prominent easterly wave during September 10–13th, the precursor of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Helene. It describes the RM3 simulated structure of the developing storm in terms of circulation, precipitation, vertical motion, cumulus heating rates, and cross-sections of wind and geopotential height anomalies. Simulated cumulus heating rates within the wave’s main precipitation area imply a lowering of the bases of active cumulus in the transition from the African continent to the Atlantic, indicating that the ocean environment promotes greater upward latent heat flux that in turn intensifies overlying storms. RM3 circulation, precipitation patterns, and storm trajectory are reasonably consistent with observational evidence. Experiments show that precipitation rates near 6°N over the eastern North Atlantic are sensitive to vertical thermal stability, such that they are enhanced by warmer in situ sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) and diminished by colder SSTs. However, prescribing colder SST causes increases in precipitation north of 9°N within areas of large scale upward vertical motion where rainfall rates are less sensitive to in situ SSTs. The evaluation of WRF indicates that its storm propagation is too fast over West Africa, where associated WRF precipitation rates are exaggerated, but its performance is improved over the Atlantic.  相似文献

Noise pollution     
Noise, sometimes referred to as the unseen pollutant, is the most inescapable form of pollution — and one which poses a long list of potential health hazards. As the world becomes more urbanized, the use of machine-technology increases, and levels of development become higher and more complex, human exposure to noise increases. One authority estimates that the average noise level in the American city is increasing by 1 dB annually.Despite the importance and great scale of the problem, geographers generally have ignored the field of noise pollution research, perhaps because specialized equipment is necessary to accumulate the data required for analysis. As a result, most noise pollution research has been performed by traffic engineers, industrial designers and urban planners to solve immediate problems with little regard for more general consideration. This article provides background which may serve as a foundation for future research on this most significant human problem. A suite of crude oils and petroleum source rock extracts from the Barrow Sub-basin of Western Australia have been analysed for biological marker compounds by capillary GC-MS, and for volatile hydrocarbons by whole oil capillary GC. These analyses were used to calculate values for twenty-three biomarker parameters in order to assess aspects of source type, maturity, migration and biodegradation of the hydrocarbons.The crude oils had a source in the Upper Jurassic Dingo Claystone formation. These hydrocarbons accumulated in the reservoir sands and in some cases were biodegraded. Several accumulation and biodegradation episodes have been recognised while the basin continued to subside, which resulted in a suite of oils showing marked differences in composition.  相似文献

Rates of splash detachment from a sandy soil of the Cottenham Series, subjected to a five-minute design storm of 50 mm/h with a kinetic energy of 127 J/m2 and a median volume drop size of 3·2 mm supplied from a rotating-disc rainfall simulator, are determined without a plant cover and with the cover of a single Brussels sprouts plant. Measurements are made at regular intervals throughout the growing season. Plant canopies of 10 to 25 per cent result in reductions of 10 to 25 per cent in rainfall volume and 10 to 81 per cent in rainfall energy. The volume and energy of the rain beneath the plant are significantly (P < 0·05) correlated with its number of leaves (r = ?0·84 and ?0·92 respectively for n = 49). No reduction was observed in the rate of splash detachment which averages 1·2 kg/m2 for the design storm with and without the plant. The detachment rate was found rather surprisingly to be inversely related to the energy of the rainfall under the plant and positively related to the number of leaves. As the number of leaves increases, so does the detachment rate per unit of rainfall energy.  相似文献

Tetracyclic diterpenoid hydrocarbons (diterpanes) based on the ent-beyerane, phyllocladane and ent-kaurane skeletons have been identified in the hydrocarbon extracts of some Australian coals, sediments and crude oils. Structures were assigned to the geological diterpanes by comparison with synthetically prepared reference compounds. Studies of a sample suite consisting of low-rank coals and sediments indicate that the ratios of C-16 epimers of phyllocladane and ent-kaurane are maturity dependent, and that the relative proportion of the thermodynamically preferred 16β (H)-compounds increases with increasing thermal maturity. Thermodynamic equilibrium for the interconversion reactions is attained in sediments before the onset of crude oil generation.The most likely natural product precursors for the tetracyclic diterpanes are considered to be the tetracyclic diterpene hydrocarbons which occur widely in the leaf resins of conifers. Tetracyclic diterpanes have been identified in sediments and coals of Permian age or younger, suggesting that these compounds are markers for both modern and extinct families of conifers. In particular, phyllocladane is proposed as a marker for the Podocarpaceae family of conifers.  相似文献

Phenocrysts of sodic sanidine from twelve upper Cenozoic units of silicic ash-flow tuff and lava from the Western United States contain from 0.25 to 0.45 the Rb present in the associated groundmass materials. The ratios of potassium to rubidium in the sanidines are, on the average, about four times greater than those of the groundmass. Separation of phenocrystic sanidine from salic melts provides an efficient method for raising the Rb content and lowering the K/Rb ratio of the melts, although the amount of differentiation probably is limited by continuous reequilibration of the alkalis between crystal and liquid phases through ion exchange. Syenites of cumulate origin will have appreciably lower Rb contents and higher K/Rb ratios than the melts from which they precipitated. Available data on the distribution of Rb between synthetic biotite and K-sanidine demonstrate that the separation of biotite probably will not deplete salic melts in Rb relative to K.Publication authorized by the Director, U.S. Geological Survey.On leave from the Department of Geological Sciences, Harvard University.  相似文献

Tides play a significant role in the coastal environment; the mangroves, back waters, creeks, and the coastal groundwater interface. Tidal range has been calculated by using TIDECAL software. This study attempts to find the relation between water table condition and tides in the shallow coastal aquifers. The study was conducted by selecting 12 open wells along the coast of the southern part of Cuddalore to the northern part of Nagapattinam district of Tamilnadu. Observations were made in situ for water table fluctuation, dissolved oxygen (DO), and electrical conductivity (EC) for 24 h during full moon (FM) and new moon (NM) of every 2 h. The present study shows the relationship between tidal variations with respect to water table fluctuations and helps to understand the behavior of DO and EC. An interpolation technique, inverse distance weighted (IDW) method was used to obtain the spatial distribution map. The temporal and the spatial relationships between water table fluctuation, EC, and DO were also used in order to understand the coastal ecosystem in the natural environment.  相似文献
