Using CN λ 3883 spectroheliograms to map weak photospheric magnetic fields

By photographically averaging time sequences of high-resolution CN 3883 spectroheliograms, the noise level due to the rapidly fluctuating intensity of the solar background has been reduced significantly. Very faint faculae that are lost in the noise on a single frame are easily visible on such an enhanced picture. A comparison between these enhanced spectroheliograms and a photoelectric magnetogram suggests that the brightness-magnetic field correlation extends to much weaker field strengths and fainter faculae than can be detected on a single, high quality CN 3883 spectroheliogram.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.     

Photometric and spectrophotometric observations of Nova Delphini 1967

Photographic, photovisual and photoelectric (V) observations of Nova Delphini 1967 were made from August 8 to October 31 (Table I, Figure 1). Simultaneously spectrophotometric measurements of the continuum were made on objective prism exposures extending to November 26, and spectrophotometric gradients derived (Tables II and III; Figures 3, 4, and 5). The continuum of Nova near its flat maximum is close to that of an early-type star in contrast to late-type absorptionline spectrum.     

Equivalent width of interstellar molecular lines

We have made an analysis of the observed equivalent widths of the lines of Lyman and Werner bands by Smith. The H₂ column densities of 3×10¹⁹ to 10²⁰ and the excitation temperature of 80 to 150 K satisfy the observations. This temperature refers to the kinetic temperature. We have also discussed the importance of getting the excitation temperature from lines of H₂ and other heteronuclear diatomic molecules for the same star and from different regions of space.     

8–13 μm spectrophotometry of Comet Kohoutek

Spectrophotometry of Comet Kohoutek (1973f) covering the wavelength range 8–13 μm is presented. The spectral shape of the derived flux excess above a blackbody closely resembles that seen in circumstellar and interstellar dust and generally attributed to metallic silicates.     

‘Copernicus’ observations of extragalactic X-ray sources

The MSSL X-ray detectors onCopernicus have been used to study a number of extragalactic objects. At least three classes of unresolved sources are found and we suggest that accretion may be the dominant mechanism.
