We estimate average compositions of near-primary, ‘reference’ ocean island basalts (OIBs) for 120 volcanic centers from 31 major island groups and constrain the depth of lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) at the time of volcanism and the possible depth of melt–mantle equilibration based on recently calibrated melt silica activity barometer. The LAB depth versus fractionation corrected OIB compositions (lava compositions, X, corrected to Mg# 73, XOIB#73, i.e., magmas in equilibrium with Fo90, if olivine is present in the mantle source) show an increased major element compositional variability with increasing LAB depths. OIBs erupted on lithospheres < 40 km thick approach the compositions (e.g. SiO2#73, TiO2#73, [CaO/Al2O3]#73) of primitive ridge basalts and are influenced strongly by depth and extent of shallow melting. However, XOIB#73 on thicker lithospheres cannot be explained by melt–mantle equilibration as shallow as LAB. Melt generation from a somewhat deeper (up to 50 km deeper than the LAB) peridotite source can explain the OIB major element chemistry on lithospheres ≤ 70 km. However, deeper melting of volatile-free, fertile peridotite is not sufficient to explain the end member primary OIBs on ≥ 70 km thick lithospheres. Comparison between XOIB#73 and experimental partial melts of fertile peridotite indicates that at least two additional melt components need to be derived from OIB source regions. The first component, similar to that identified in HIMU lavas, is characterized by low SiO2#73, Al2O3#73, [Na2O/TiO2]#73, and high FeO?#73, CaO#73, [CaO/Al2O3]#73. The second component, similar to that found in Hawaiian Koolau lavas, is characterized by high SiO2#73, moderately high FeO?#73, and low CaO#73 and Al2O3#73. These two components are not evenly sampled by all the islands, suggesting a heterogeneous distribution of mantle components that generate them. We suggest that carbonated eclogite and volatile-free, silica-excess eclogite are the two most likely candidates, which in conjunction with fertile mantle peridotite, give rise to the two primitive OIB end members. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Beach‐nourishment operations designed to replace sediment lost through erosion change the identity and meaning of coastal landscapes. Seven beaches in Tuscany, nourished with marble‐quarry waste, reveal how an industrial byproduct is naturalized by particle rounding and sorting and can become a positive symbol of human‐altered nature. The marble was placed on formerly sandy beaches, resulting in different grain size and color of sediments, beach morphology, and value for human use. The abrasion rate of marble makes the nourished beaches unsatisfactory when viewed solely as protection structures, but the rapid particle rounding and aesthetic appeal of marble increase the acceptability of the beaches for recreation. 相似文献

One of the key environmental concerns about shrimp farming is the discharge of waters with high levels of nutrients and suspended solids into adjacent waterways. In this paper we synthesize the results of our multidisciplinary research linking ecological processes in intensive shrimp ponds with their downstream impacts in tidal, mangrove-lined creeks. The incorporation of process measurements and bioindicators, in addition to water quality measurements, improved our understanding of the effect of shrimp farm discharges on the ecological health of the receiving water bodies. Changes in water quality parameters were an oversimplification of the ecological effects of water discharges, and use of key measures including primary production rates, phytoplankton responses to nutrients, community shifts in zooplankton and delta15N ratios in marine plants have the potential to provide more integrated and robust measures. Ultimately, reduction in nutrient discharges is most likely to ensure the future sustainability of the industry. 相似文献

We report on the search for distant radio-loud quasars in the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) of flat spectrum radio sources with S 5GHz >30 mJy . Unresolved optical counterparts were selected from APM scans of POSS-I plates, with e <19.0 and red o − e >2.0 colours, in an effective area of ∼6400 deg2 . Four sources were found to be quasars with z >4 , of which one was previously known. This sample bridges the gap between the strong radio surveys with S 5GHz >200 mJy and the samples of radio-weak quasars that can be generated via radio observations of optically selected quasars. In addition, four new quasars at z >3 have been found. The selection criteria result in a success-rate of ∼1:7 for radio-loud quasars at z >4 , which is a significant improvement over previous studies. This search yields a surface density of 1 per 1600 deg2 , which is about a factor of ∼15 lower than that found in a similar search for radio-quiet quasars at z >4 . The study presented here is strongly biased against quasars beyond z >4.5 , since the e -passband of the POSS-I only samples the spectra shortward of 1200 Å at these redshifts. 相似文献

We have discovered a radio source (B2114+022) with a unique structure during the course of the JVAS gravitational lens survey. VLA, MERLIN, VLBA and MERLIN+EVN radio maps reveal four compact components, in a configuration unlike that of any known lens system, or, for that matter, any of the ∼15 000 radio sources in the JVAS and CLASS surveys. Three of the components are within 0.3 arcsec of each other while the fourth is separated from the group by 2.4 arcsec. The widest separation pair of components have similar radio structures and spectra. The other pair also have similar properties. This latter pair have spectra which peak at ∼5 GHz. Their surface brightnesses are much lower than expected for synchrotron self-absorbed components.
Ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope optical observations show two galaxies ( z =0.3157 and 0.5883) separated by 1.25 arcsec. The lower redshift galaxy has a post-starburst spectrum and lies close to, but not coincident with, the compact group of three radio components. We argue that the most likely explanation of the B2114+022 system is that the post-starburst galaxy, assisted by the second galaxy, lenses a distant radio source producing the two wide-separation images. The other two radio components are then associated with the post-starburst galaxy. The approach to the analysis of compositional data involving log-ratio transformation of the data has not been generally adopted by researchers wishing to analyse such data. In the context of exploratory methods of multivariate analysis, such as principal components analysis, where the hope is to identify (cluster) structure in the data, this may be because traditional methods can produce more interpretable results than the log-ratio approach. After illustrating this with an example, circumstances under which the log-ratio approach performs poorly when traditional approaches work well are identified. Log-ratio analysis can be dominated by variables having low absolute presence and high relative variation that do not contribute to, and can obscure, structure in the data. Traditional methods can detect certain kinds of structure in the data that correspond to structure on a ratio scale, after a suitable redefinition of the composition. Since traditional methods often detect such structure more directly than log-ratio analysis it can be concluded that claims that the traditional analysis is inappropriate or meaningless are exaggerated. This conclusion is based on empirical experience rather than theoretical concerns. The arguments are illustrated using compositional data for alkaline glasses, but have more general application. 相似文献

The potential for petroleum-contaminated soils to impact ground water is evaluated using the soil leachability model in South Carolina and Georgia. In this model, the Green and Ampt (1911) equation is used to estimate unsaturated flow with saturated hydraulic conductivity (K(S)) values obtained using the Rawls and Brakensiek (1989) equation from inputs of percent sand- and clay-sized particles. However, many soils have > 70% sand-sized particles, which is the maximum amount for which the Rawls and Brakensiek equation is valid. Therefore, 70 sets of K(S) and particle-size data from the literature for southeastern United States sandy soils were analyzed to develop a new equation for estimating K(S). A multiple linear regression model with an adjusted R2 = 0.65 (p < 0.0001) was developed from percent clay- and sand-sized particle data. Eight additional sets of data were used to validate the model. The root mean square deviation and maximum squared difference, (yi - yi(2)), values for the new model are smaller than those obtained using the Rawls and Brakensiek equation, or Rosetta, a neural network-based model (Schaap 1999). The new model provides estimates that are within an order of magnitude for all but one of the test data sets. Rosetta predicts K(S) within one order of magnitude of measured values for six test data, and predicts K(S) within two orders of magnitude for the other two. The Rawls and Brakensiek predictions are within one order of magnitude for four test data, but are two or more orders of magnitude too high for the remaining four points. The new equation is recommended for estimating K(S) for sandy southeastern United States soils for which inputs are limited to percent sand and clay. 相似文献

Physical and chemical parameters were measured in a subtropical estuary with a blind river source in southwest Florida, United States, to assess seasonal discharge of overland flow and groundwater in hydrologic mixing. Water temperature, pH, salinity, alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), δ18O, and δ13CDIC varied significantly due to seasonal rainfall and climate. Axial distribution of the physical and chemical parameters constrained by tidal conditions during sampling showed that river water at low tide was a mixture of freshwater from overland flow and saline ground-water in the wet season and mostly saline groundwater in the dry season. Relationships between salinity and temperature, δ18O, and DIC for both the dry and wet seasons showed that DIC was most sensitive to seawater mixing in the estuary as DIC changed in concentration between values measured in river water at the tidal front to the most seaward station. A salinity-δ13CDIC model was able to describe seawater mixing in the estuary for the wet season but not for the dry season because river water salinity was higher than that of seawater and the salinity gradient between seawater and river water was small. A DIC-δ13CDIC mixing model was able to describe mixing of carbon from sheet flow and river water at low tide, and river water and seawater at high tide for both wet and dry seasons. The DIC-δ13CDIC model was able to predict the seawater end member DIC for the wet season. The model was not able to predict the seawater end member DIC for the dry season data due to secondary physical and biogeochemical processes that altered estuarine DIC prior to mixing with seawater. The results of this study suggest that DIC and δ13CDIC can provide additional insights into mixing of river water and seawater in estuaries during periods where small salinity gradients between river water and seawater and higher river water salinities preclude the use of salinity-carbon models. 相似文献
