This article analyzes how far U.S. companies locate subsidiaries in need of highly skilled staff in state locations in Germany that have a high ranking of creativity. Such locations should provide an especially attractive location for certain “creative” staff, which should be of special interest to U.S. companies in need of highly skilled staff. Analyzing U.S. companies that were established since the year 2000 and with more than fifty staff, we find support for our propositions that nonmanufacturing and organizationally higher rank subsidiaries with a need for urban infrastructure and connectedness are located in creative states in Germany.  相似文献

We examine the distributions of 2888 numbered minor planets over orbital inclination, eccentricity, and semimajor axis, and define 19 zones which we believe adequately to isolate the selection biases in survey programs of the physical properties of minor planets. Six numbered asteroids have exceptional orbits and fall into no zone. We also call attention to rather sharp upper limits, which become increasingly stringent at larger heliocentric distances, on orbital inclinations and eccentricity.  相似文献

Zooplankton from coastal/continental margin environments can be transported long distances seaward into the subarctic North Pacific by the large (100–200 km diameter) anticyclonic eddies that form annually in late winter along the eastern margin of the Alaska Gyre. One recurrent region for eddy formation is off the southern tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands (near 52°N 132°W). Eddies from this source region (termed ‘Haida eddies’) propagate westward into open ocean waters during the subsequent 1–3 years, often to about 140°W, occasionally to mid gyre. Each eddy contains a core of anomalously low density water, and produces an upward doming of the sea surface detectable by satellite altimetry, thereby aiding repeated ship-based sampling. The zooplankton community in the eddies is a mixture between shelf/slope species (transported from the nearshore formation region) and subarctic oceanic species (which colonize the eddy from the sides and below). This paper reports sequential observations (late winter, early summer and fall seasons of 2000, and early summer and fall of 2001) of the abundance and distribution of continental-margin zooplankton in the Haida eddies that formed in late winters of 2000 and 2001. Shelf-origin species declined in abundance over time. Species that appeared to have a continental slope origin sometimes declined but sometimes persisted and flourished. Transport and retention within the eddy appeared to be especially effective for species that undergo diel vertical migration. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Absolute quantum yields for the formation of OH radicals in the laser photolysis of aqueous solutions of NO3 -, NO2 - and H2O2 at 308 and 351 nm and as a function of pH and temperature have been measured. A scavenging technique involving the reaction between OH and SCN- ions and the time resolved detection by visible absorption of the (SCN)2 - radical ion was used to determine the absolute OH yields. The following results were obtained:

These lifetimes will increase by a factor of two (NO3 -, NO2 -) and by 15% (H2O2) at T=278 K. Using average ambient concentrations in tropospheric aqueous droplets, the photolytic OH source strengths from these species are calculated to be 2.8×10-11, 1.3×10-11 and 1.4×10-11 mol 1-1 s-1 for NO3 -, NO2 - and H2O2 respectively.

Methods for predicting aquifer sensitivity to contamination typically ignore geochemical factors that affect the occurrence of contaminants such as nitrate. Use of geochemical information offers a simple and accurate method for estimating aquifer sensitivity to nitrate contamination. We developed a classification method in which nitrate-sensitive aquifers have dissolved oxygen concentrations > 1.0 mg/L, Eh values >250 mV, and either reduced iron concentrations < 0.1 mg/L or total iron concentrations < 0.7 mg/L. We tested the method in four Minnesota aquifer systems having different geochemical and hydrologic conditions. A surficial sand aquifer in central Minnesota exhibited geochemical zonation, with a rapid shift from aerobic to anaerobic conditions 5 m below the water table. A fractured bedrock aquifer in east-central Minnesota remained aerobic to depths of 50 m, except in areas where anaerobic ground water discharged upward from an underlying aquifer. A bedrock aquifer in southeast Minnesota exhibited aerobic conditions when overlain by surficial deposits lacking shale, whereas anaerobic conditions occurred under deposits that contained shale. Surficial sand aquifers in northwest Minnesota contained high concentrations of sulfate and were anaerobic throughout their extent. Nitrate-nitrogen was detected at concentrations exceeding 1 mg/L in 135 of 149 samples classified as sensitive. Nitrate was not detected in any of the 109 samples classified as not sensitive. We observed differences between our estimates of sensitivity and existing sensitivity maps, which are based on methods that do not consider aquifer geochemistry. Because dissolved oxygen, reduced iron, and Eh are readily measured in the field, use of geochemistry provides a quick and accurate way of assessing aquifer sensitivity to nitrate contamination.  相似文献

Color, polarization and albedo data are summarized for the three known minor planets of optical type E— 44 Nysa, 64 Angelina and 434 Hungaria. The inventory of E asteroids with dimensions > 50 km is shown to be essentially complete. The surfaces of the E objects evidently consist of colorless, translucent, iron-free silicates such as plagioclase, forstefite, or enstatite. Their possible identification as the source of enstatite achondrites is consistent with new laboratory polarimetry of the Norton County aubrite. Both Nysa and Hungaria seem to be rather favorably situated for the production of meteorites.Nysa has a highly non-spherical shape, and is dynamically associated with the metal-rich asteroid 135 Hertha and several small objects also apparently of the metal-depleted E type. The configuration is suggestive of the fragments of a differentiated parent body, in which Hertha originated as the iron core and Nysa as the largest surviving mantle fragment. The relative volumes, however, are not consistent with simple igneous differentiation from a chondritic composition.  相似文献

Photoelectric magnitudes and colors on the UBV system are presented for 65 minor planets, including four Mars crossers, six Trojans, and main-belt objects down to 6 km in diameter. The Trojans all have very similar colors not characteristics of the main-belt population. A paucity of S-type asteroids at the smallest diameters, predicted from trends seen at larger sizes, is not observed. The newly available color data for small objects ranging from 1.0 to 5.2 AU in heliocentric distance show the main belt to be a transition zone between predominantly silicate and carbonaceous compositions.  相似文献

Five narrowband interference filters centered at wavelengths 0.365, 0.387, 0.406, 0.484, and 0.514 μm have been selected by the International Astronomical Union to represent ultraviolet continuum, CN emission, C3 emission, blue continuum, and C2 emission in the spectra of comets, respectively. We present adopted magnitudes and colors in this filter system for 50 standard stars ranging in blue magnitude 4 to 12, in spectral type from O to K, and mostly distributed around equatorial regions of the sky. Tabulated uncertainties are generally on the order of 0.02 mag or smaller. The zero points of the photometric system are chosen such that blue-continuum magnitudes are approximately equivalent to Johnson B, and such that color indices average zero for solar analog stars.  相似文献
