Portions of the Moon were observed by the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photopolarimeter Experiment ( WUPPE ) on 1995 March 12, 14 and 17, and represent the first ultraviolet (UV) spectropolarimetric observations of the Moon. The polarimetric observations confirm that a change in the dominant scattering process occurs in the UV, changing from volume scattering in the near-UV to surface scattering in the far-UV. The data are investigated empirically. It is found that Umov's relationship holds when the polarization is perpendicular to the scattering plane. It is also found that the degree of polarization can be modelled by a phase-angle-dependent polarization modified by a wavelength-dependent depolarization factor. The scattering function for each observation is determined.  相似文献

A taxonomic system was introduced by C. R. Chapman, D. Morrison, and B. Zellner [Icarus25, 104–130 (1975)], in which minor planets are classified according to a few readily observable optical properties, independent of specific mineralogical interpretations. That taxonomy is here augmented to five classes, now precisely defined in terms of seven parameters obtained from polarimetry, spectrophotometry, radiometry, and UBV photometry of 523 objects. We classify 190 asteroids as type C, 141 as type S, 13 as type M, 3 as type E, and 3 as type R; 55 objects are shown to fall outside these five classes and are designated U (unclassifiable). For the remaining 118, the data exclude two or more types but are insufficient for unambiguous classification. Reliable diameters, from radiometry or polarimetry or else from albedos adopted as typical of the types, are listed for 396 objects. We also compare our taxonomy with other ones and discuss how classification efforts are related to the interpretation of asteroid mineralogies.  相似文献

Asteroids in general display only small or negligible variations in spectrum or albedo during a rotational cycle. Color variations with rotation are described in the literature but are usually comparable to the noise in the measurements. Twenty-four asteroids have been systematically monitored for such color changes. Only 3 Juno, 4 Vesta, 6 Hebe, 71 Niobe, 349 Dembowska, and 944 Hidalgo display color variations larger than 0.03 mag. In each of these cases the asteroid appears redder near maximum brightness. Of seven asteroids monitored polarimetrically, only 4 Vesta shows a convincing variation, attributed to an albedo change with rotation. The lightcurve can be explained by albedo differences alone; Vesta apparently has a nearly spheroidal shape. Notwithstanding the above results, the degree of uniformity of most asteroid surfaces is remarkable. If asteroids exist with large discrete domains of ferrosilicate, metallic, and/or carbonaceous material together on their surfaces, they have not yet been identified.  相似文献

Multicolor photometry was obtained of satellites J6 Himalia, J7 Elara, and J10 Lysithea in the prograde cloud of outer Jovian satellites, and of J8 Pasiphae, J9 Sinope, and J11 Carme in the retrograde cloud. Our data for J9 are fragmentary; otherwise, the satellites all look like C-class asteroids, except J11, which shows a remarkable brightness in the ultraviolet. The absence of D-class spectra among the outer Jovian satellites suggests that they were not derived from the same population as the outer-belt and Trojan asteroid populations.  相似文献

The Keck Observatory's adaptive optics (AO) system has been used to observe Asteroid 4 Vesta during its 2003 closest approach to Earth. Broadband K- and L-band images, centered at 2.1 and 3.6 μm, respectively, are presented here. The sharpness of the images was improved by applying a deconvolution algorithm, MISTRAL, to the images. The K- and L-band images at spatial resolutions of 53 km (0.055) and 88 km (0.085), respectively, display albedo features on the surface of the asteroid that can also be seen in the HST images (673 nm) presented by Thomas et al. [1997. Impact excavation on Asteroid 4 Vesta: Hubble Space Telescope results. Science 277, 1492-1495] and Binzel et al. [1997. Geologic mapping of Vesta from 1994 Hubble Space Telescope images. Icarus 128, 95-103] at the same latitudes and longitudes. While we cannot determine the morphology of these features, we can speculate that some of the albedo features may be impact craters filled with dark material. Spectra, centered at 1.65 and 2.1 μm, were also obtained. Spectra were corrected for the solar flux and are similar to those published by Gaffey [1997.
