Reservoir operation is one of the challenging problems for water resources planners and managers. In developing countries the end users are represented by the water sectors in most parts and conflict over water is resolved at the agency level. This paper discusses an overview of simulation and optimization modeling methods utilized in resolving critical issues with regard to reservoir systems. In designing a highly efficient as well as effective dam and reservoir operational system, reservoir simulation constitutes one of the most important steps to be considered. Reservoirs with well-functional and reliable optimization models require very accurate simulations. However, the nonlinearity of natural physical processes causes a major problem in determining the simulation of the reservoir’s parameters (elevation, surface-area, storage). Optimization techniques have shown high efficiency when used with simulation modeling and the combination of the two methods had given the best results in the reservoir management. The principal concern of this review study is to critically evaluate and analyze simulation, optimization and combined simulation–optimization modeling approach and present an overview of their utility in previous studies. Inferences and suggestions which may assist in improving quality of this overview in the future are provided. These will also enable future researchers, system analysts and managers to achieve more precise optimal operational system.  相似文献

The city of Oran is exposed to a significant seismic hazard, as almost all the northern Algeria territory, where numerous casualties and severe damage occurred in the last decades due to several moderate to large earthquakes. A mitigation policy should include the establishment of priorities to reduce the vulnerability of existing buildings based on the knowledge of the actual urban fabrics. The complexity of vulnerability assessment requires a gradual approach from the urban scale to the building scale. The study reported in this paper corresponds to the first step of such an approach, i.e., a preliminary study of the seismic vulnerability and expected damage within an urban district of the city of Oran, based on a non-dedicated data base from a building survey previously performed for other purposes. The main goals of this study are twofold: (1) an assessment of the degree of uncertainty and robustness of such results through a comparison of the results derived from different urban vulnerability methods (GNDT 2; RISK-UE LM1; and VULNERALP 2.0) and (2) an assessment of the actual level of seismic risk in the city of Oran. Cross-method comparisons and correlations highlight a satisfactory agreement between mean damage estimates at the urban scale, despite significant scattering at the single building scale, and uncertainty levels which vary significantly from one method to the other. For a given scenario, the three methods provide damage estimates lying within half an EMS damage degree of one another, with some systematic positive bias for VULNERALP and negative bias for RISK-UE LM1, especially for masonry buildings. The expected mean damage is very important for intensities 9 and 10, with an average damage grade around 3–4 for intensity 9 and 4–5 for intensity 10. The spatial distribution of damage systematically exhibits larger values in the northern, older, commercial area, than in the southern, more recent and more residential area, in relation to the building typology and the existence of several aggravating factors. Some areas of higher vulnerability / damage can be distinguished, which should receive particular attention for retrofitting priorities or urban planning decisions, also taking into account their cultural heritage value.  相似文献

In this study, the poro-thermoelastic problem with the effect of the magnetic field and Seebeck parameter was investigated. Modified Ohm's law that includes effects of the temperature gradient (Seebeck effect) and charge density, as well as generalized Fourier's law with current density, is introduced. We applied normal mode analysis to solve the resulting nondimensional coupled equations and then investigated the effects that nondimensional displacements, temperature distribution, excess pore water pressure, stresses, and induced magnetic field exerted on the poro-thermoelastic half-space medium. Numerical analyses are given graphically on the square (2D) and cubic (3D) domains to illustrate the effects of the porosity parameter, magnetic field, and Seebeck parameter on the physical variables.  相似文献

A finite element 2D Monte Carlo approach is used to evaluate the sensitivity of groundwater contaminant discharges to a Damkohler number ω and spatial variability in aquifer hydraulic conductivity, initial microbial biomass concentrations, and electron acceptor/donor concentrations. Bioattenuation is most sensitive to spatial variations in incipient biomass and critical electron donors/acceptors for ω ≥ 1 (i.e., when pore-water residence times are high compared to the time needed for microbial growth or contaminant attenuation). Under these conditions, critical reaction processes can become substrate-limited at multiple locations throughout the aquifer; which in turn increases expected contaminant discharges and their uncertainties at monitored transects. For ω ≤ 0.2, contaminant discharge is not sensitive to incipient biomass variations. Physical heterogeneities expedite plume arrival and delay departure at transects and in turn attenuate peak discharges but do not affect cumulative contaminant discharges. Physical heterogeneities do, however, induce transect mass discharge variances that are bimodal functions of time; the first peak beings consistently higher. A simple stream tube model is invoked to explain the occurrence of peaks in contaminant discharge variance.  相似文献

Excessive amounts of mineral fertilizers are unnecessarily applied to agricultural soils in Egypt to increase crop yield. The current study aims at assessing the impacts of fertilization with different mineral fertilizers for different cultivation periods on the accumulation of heavy metals in soils and plants grown thereon. In addition, human risks resulted due to the exposure to these metal ions through ingestion, and dermal routes were evaluated. Soil and plant samples were collected from several locations in El‐Behira Governorate, Egypt and their heavy metal contents were measured. The result indicated that there is a continuous accumulation of heavy metals in the soils and the plants grown thereon. Calculation of the hazard index (HI) revealed that humans, especially children, have a potential health risk for both Pb and Cd, which have levels greater than the safe level (1). Finally, the obtained results showed that the continuous application of mineral fertilizers containing high levels of heavy metals pose a potential health threat.  相似文献

Recently, both the Egyptian government and private sector have been interested in developing low desert zone areas. The low desert zones are located between the recent Nile flood plain and the limestone plateau, from the east and west sides, and represent an important source of aggregate materials. The development of these areas, however, will reduce the supply of aggregate materials so that new sources must be identified. This study describes several processing methods, applied to a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus image of 2001, to develop a reliable method to map the aggregate materials. By using different enhancement techniques with the help of a supervised classification method, it was found that decorrelation stretch and principal component analysis are the most suitable methods to discriminate between different types of aggregates, as well as to isolate these aggregates from the surrounding materials. Field and laboratory investigations indicated that two types of aggregates were recognized, confirming the remote sensing findings.  相似文献

Tide gauge data is important for determining global or local sea level rise with respect to a global geocentric reference frame. Data from repeated precise levelling connections between the tide gauges and a series of coastal and inland benchmarks, including Continuous GPS (CGPS) benchmarks, are used to determine the stability of tide gauges at 12 locations in the South Pacific. The method for determining this stability is based on a constant velocity model which minimises the net movement amongst a set of datum benchmarks surveyed since the installation of the tide gauges. When assessed at a 95% confidence interval, and with the exception of the Solomon Islands, none of the tide gauges were found to be in motion relative to their CGPS benchmarks. The Solomon Islands estimate is considered to be unreliable since the CGPS benchmark was recently established and has been surveyed fewer than three times. In Tonga and Cook Islands, the tide gauges were found to be disturbed or affected by survey errors whereas the Vanuatu results were affected by earthquakes.  相似文献

A moderate Mw 4.9 earthquake struck the Beni Haoua (Algeria) coastal area on April 25, 2012. The mainshock was largely recorded by the accelerograph network of the Centre National de Recherche Appliquée en Génie Parasismique (CGS). The same day the earthquake occurred, eight mobile short period stations were deployed through the epicentral area. In this study, we use accelerogram and seismogram data recorded by these two networks. We combined the focal mechanism built from the first motion of P waves and from waveform inversion, and the distribution of aftershocks to well constrain the source parameters. The mainshock is located with a shallow focal depth, ~9 km, and the focal mechanism shows a nearly pure left lateral strike slip motion, with total seismic moment of 2.8?×?1016 N.m (Mw?=?4.9). The aftershocks mainly cluster on a narrow NS strip, starting at the coast up to 3–4 km inland. This cluster, almost vertical, is concentrated between 6 and 10 km depth. The second part of this work concerns the damage distribution and estimated intensity in the epicentral area. The damage distribution is discussed in connection with the observed maximum strong motion. The acceleration response spectrum with 5 % damping of the mainshock and aftershocks give the maximum amplitude in high frequency which directly affects the performance of the high-frequency structures. Finally, we tie this earthquake with the seismotectonic of the region, leading to conclude that it occurred on a N–S transform zone between two major compressional fault zones oriented NE–SW.  相似文献
