Recently, near infrared spectroscopy in combination with double derivative technique has been effectively used by Christy
(Vib Spectrosc 54:42–49, 2010) to study and differentiate between free and hydrogen bonded silanol groups on silica gel surface. The method has given some
insight into the type of functionalities, their location in silica gel samples, and the way the water molecules bind onto
the silanol groups. The important information in this respect comes from the overtones of the OH groups of water molecules
hydrogen-bonded to free silanol groups, and hydrogen-bonded silanol groups absorbing in the region 5,500–5,100 cm−1. Chemically, opal minerals are hydrated silica and the same approach was adapted to study the state of water molecules, silanol
functionalities, and their locations in opal samples from Slovakia. Twenty opal samples classified into CT and A classes and
one quartz sample were used in this work. The samples were crushed using a hydraulic press and powderized. Each sample was
then subjected to evacuation process to remove surface-adsorbed water at 200°C, and the near infrared spectrum of each sample
was measured using a Perkin Elmer NTS FT-NIR spectrometer equipped with a transflectance accessory and a DTGS detector. The
samples were also heated to 750°C to remove the hydrogen-bonded silanol groups on the surface to reveal their locality. Second
derivative profiles of the near infrared reflectance spectra were obtained using the instrument’s software and used in the
detailed analysis of the samples. The analysis of the near infrared spectra and their second derivative profiles had the aim
in finding relationships between the surface chemical structure and the classification of opal samples. The dry opal samples
were also tested for their surface adsorption effectivity toward water molecules. The results indicate that the opal samples
contain (1) surface-adsorbed water, (2) free and hydrogen-bonded silanol groups on the surface, (3) trapped water molecules
in the bulk, and (4) free and hydrogen-bonded silanol groups in the cavity surfaces in the bulk. A part of the water molecules
in the bulk of opal minerals are found as free molecules and the rest are found in hydrogen-bonded state to either free or

More than 2000 of mountain lakes covering more than 0.1 ha exist in a territory of Kyrgyzstan. Nearly 20% of them are dangerous because of instability of lake dams, frequent overflows and melting of buried ice inside the moraine dams. According to the Kyrgyz lake inventory, 328 lakes are at risk of outburst and 12 lakes are considered as actually dangerous. Since 1952 more than 70 disastrous cases of lake outbursts have occurred. The majority of the endangered lakes belong to one of the three genetic types: morainic-glacier, supraglacial and lake dammed by landslides and debris flows. Petrov, Adygine and Koltor lakes were selected and studied in the Tien-Shan Mountains as case studies of the most frequent genetic types of hazardous lakes. Observations were focused on the morphology of the lake basin and the surrounding relief, outflow pattern and processes controlling the development of lake. Aerosols consist of organic and inorganic species, and the composition and concentration of these species depends on their sources, chemical transformation and sinks. In this study an assessment of major inorganic ions determined in three aerosol particle size ranges collected for 1 year at Welgegund in South Africa was conducted. SO42? and ammonium (NH4+) dominated the PM1 size fraction, while SO42? and nitrate (NO3) dominated the PM1–2.5 and PM2.5–10 size fractions. SO42? had the highest contribution in the two smaller size fractions, while NO3? had the highest contribution in the PM2.5–10 size fraction. SO42? and NO3? levels were attributed to the impacts of aged air masses passing over major anthropogenic source regions. Comparison of inorganic ion concentrations to levels thereof within a source region influencing Welgegund, indicated higher levels of most species within the source region. However, the comparative ratio of SO42? was significantly lower due to SO42? being formed distant from SO2 emissions and submicron SO42? having longer atmospheric residencies. The PM at Welgegund was determined to be acidic, mainly due to high concentrations of SO42?. PM1 and PM1–2.5 fractions revealed a seasonal pattern, with higher inorganic ion concentrations measured from May to September. Higher concentrations were attributed to decreased wet removal, more pronounced inversion layers trapping pollutants, and increases in household combustion and wild fires during winter. Back trajectory analysis also revealed higher concentrations of inorganic ionic species corresponding to air mass movements over anthropogenic source regions. 相似文献
