Spherical tensor approach to the solution of the mantle stress problem

Summary The technique of spherical tensors is applied to the problem of stress in the mantle. An efficient method for stress computation is developed for the Newtonian mantle with spherical boundaries assuming that the density and gravitational potential in the form of harmonic expansions are known. The ways of including more complicated rheological models as well as the non-spherical shape of boundaries are outlined.

Normal gravity model of phobos

Summary The normal gravity field of Phobos defined by the sum a) of the gravitational potential of a homogeneous tri-axial ellipsoid representing the body of Phobos, b) of the potential of its centrifugal forces, c) of the constant part in the tidal-forming potential due to Mars, has been investigated. The radius-vector of the equipotential surface representing the normal model, as well as the gravity on it, have been derived. The long-term variations in the figure parameters and in gravity, due to the tidal evolution of the Mars—Phobos system, have been derived.

Cultural and social dimensions of borderlands: The case of the Italo-Slovene trans-border area

The article represents an attempt to explore the dimensions of border landscapes on the basis of some recent theoretical and methodological geographical trends in approaching such kind of regions and in the case of a special part of the current Italo-Slovene transborder area — the Gorizia section. Here, the contradiction between the stability of trans-border cultural and social links and the lability of the political partition seems to be particularly sharp. As a consequence, the border population try to reproduce the traditional spatial and social milieu in which it used to live before changes in international political framework occurred. Field methods for the detection of local social and cultural trans-border relations are then introduced, disclosing both the extent and qualities of the Gorizia trans-border region.
