On October 25, 2010, a large earthquake occurred off the coast of the Mentawai islands in Indonesia, generating a tsunami that caused damage to the coastal area of North Pagai, South Pagai, and Sipora islands. Field surveys were conducted soon after the event by several international survey teams, including the authors’. These surveys clarified the tsunami height distribution, the damage that took place, and residents’ awareness of tsunamis in the affected islands. Heights of over 5 m were recorded on the coastal area of the Indian Ocean side of North and South Pagai islands and the south part of Sipora island. In some villages, it was difficult to evacuate immediately after the earthquake because of the lack of routes to higher ground or the presence of rivers. Residents in some villages had taken part in tsunami drills or education; however, not all villages shared awareness of tsunami threats. In the present paper, based on the results of these field surveys, the vulnerability of these islands with regards to future tsunami threats was analyzed. Three important aspects of this tsunami disaster, namely the geographic disadvantage of the islands, the resilience of buildings and other infrastructure, and people’s awareness of tsunamis, are discussed in detail, and corresponding tsunami mitigation strategies are explained.  相似文献

A study of the fracture systems in the basement of the Matatlan urban waste dump of Guadalajara City, near the western edge of the Rio Grande de Santiago canyon (southwestern Mexico), is reported. The Matatlan dumpsite was developed on top of andesitic and rhyolitic rocks. Measurements at outcrops indicated that N–S (0°–15° and 165°–180°), N45–90E and N105–135E fracture systems affect the basement. Statistical analysis (micromagnetic method) of magnetic lineament azimuths indicated the presence of two lineament groups. The major one (N60–120E) has a maximum at N90–105E, and a secondary group (N120–165E). The gravity anomalies are featured by a major group (N60–120E, with maximums at N60–75E, and N105–120E) and a secondary group (N120–180E). Thus, a good to fair correlation exists between the measured fracture orientations and the lineaments featuring the gravity and magnetic anomalies. Horizontal derivative and tilt angle depicted horizontal limits of anomaly‐causative bodies. Results of the micromagnetic method are consistent with fracture orientations and with the limits established through edge‐detection techniques. Lineaments established by means of the gravity and magnetic Euler deconvolution are also consistent. Gravity and magnetic Euler deconvolution helped to estimate the depth extent of the limits of gravity and magnetic common sources. Euler deconvolution indicated the fault or contact nature of these lineaments. Furthermore, Euler deconvolution indicated slopes of the limits of gravity and magnetic sources. The fault or fracture nature of the major lineaments was finally confirmed by forward modelling (forward 2D cooperative modelling of gravity and magnetic profiles). For example, lineaments delimiting the northern depression could be characterized as normal faults. In general, this study indicates that it is possible, based on gravity and magnetic data, to characterize fractures affecting the basement of a dumpsite, a key parameter in hydrogeophysical studies. In particular, through this study, the inferred structures could be associated with regional tectonic faulting, which might provide migration paths to unhealthy lixiviate outside the dumpsite, giving rise to the contamination of the neighbouring environment. In particular, the study explains the presence of an unhealthy leachate waterfall to the northeast of the dumping site. Heavy metal contents in samples from this waterfall support that lixiviates originate at the dumpsite.  相似文献

A novel low-cost friction sliding system for bidirectional excitation is developed to improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers. The sliding system is a spherical prototype developed by combining a central flat surface with an inclined spherical segment, characterized by stable oscillation and a large reduction in response accelerations on the flat surface. The inclined part provides a restoring force that limits the residual displacements of the system. Conventional steel and concrete are employed to construct a flat-inclined spherical surface atop an RC pier. The seismic forces are dissipated through the frictions generated during the sliding movements; hence, the seismic resilience of bridges can be ensured with a low-cost design solution. The proposed system is fabricated utilizing a mold created by a three-dimensional printer, which facilitates the use of conventional concrete to construct spherical shapes. The concrete surface is lubricated with a resin material to prevent abrasion from multiple input ground motions. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the system, bidirectional shaking table tests are conducted in the longitudinal and transverse directions of a scaled bridge model. The effect of the inclination angle and the flat surface size is investigated. The results demonstrate a large decrease in response acceleration when the system exhibits circular sliding displacement. Furthermore, the inclination angle that generates the smallest residual displacement is identified experimentally.  相似文献

This research aims to understand how insurance, rainfall, land cover and urban flooding are related and how these variables influenced the material damage in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) during the 2000–2011 period. Correlation coefficients show strong relationships between built-up areas and claims (0.94) and payouts (0.88). Despite no significant relationships being found between rainfall and the amount of material damage per event, three likelihood levels of flooding were determined for hourly rainfall. Unlike the studied period, the number of claims and their spatial distribution during the 2008 extreme rainfall event were strongly dependent on rainfall. Flooding related to the old watercourses assumed greater importance during this extreme event, recovering a more natural/ancient hydrological behaviour. In the LMA, the greatest material damage was the result of high-magnitude/low-probability rainfall events. Lower magnitude events can trigger numerous claims in heavily built-up areas, but they are hardly capable of producing large material damage.  相似文献

A geostatistically based approach is developed for the identification of aquifer transmissivities in Yolo Basin, California. The approach combines weighted least-squares with universal kriging and cokriging techniques in an overall scheme that (1)considers a prioriknown information on aquifer transmissivity and specific capacities of wells, (2)considers uncertainties in water level and transmissivity data, and (3)estimates the reliability of the generated transmissivity values. Minimization of a global least-squares function that incorporates calibration and plausibility criteria leads to a transmissivity map that shows a good agreement with pumping-test results.  相似文献

A study of new material of Cylindroporella ? lusitanica Ramalho, 1970, from the Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) strata of Portugal identified features not observed previously. This includes the pattern of its laterals, including the gametophores. The algal body plan is unique and justifies the taxonomic reassessment of this species and the introduction of Barattoloporellopsis n. gen. Furthermore this species is most likely a primitive Dasycladaceae, a “missing link” between the modern ones (starting from the Cretaceous times) and their Jurassic ancestors.  相似文献

With 80 % of world trade carried by sea, seaports provide crucial linkages in global supply-chains and are essential for the ability of all countries to access global markets. Seaports are likely to be affected directly and indirectly by climatic changes, with broader implications for international trade and development. Due to their coastal location, seaports are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events associated with increasing sea levels and tropical storm activity, as illustrated by hurricane “Sandy”. In view of their strategic role as part of the globalized trading system, adapting ports in different parts of the world to the impacts of climate change is of considerable importance. Reflecting the views of a diverse group of stakeholders with expertise in climate science, engineering, economics, policy, and port management, this essay highlights the climate change challenge for ports and suggests a way forward through the adoption of some initial measures. These include both “soft” and “hard” adaptations that may be spearheaded by individual port entities, but will require collaboration and support from a broad range of public and private sector stakeholders and from society at large. In particular, the essay highlights a need to shift to more holistic planning, investment and operation.  相似文献
