A new type of noble metal mineralization in the Northern Caucasus

The weathering crust of the Beden ultrabasite massif (the basin of Big Laba River) is identified and studied. Anomalously high contents of noble metals (Au, Pt, Pd) are revealed in the basal horizon of the Jurassic part of the weathering crust. For this reason we suspect an existence of a belt of noble metal miner-alization in the Paleozoic ultrabasites in the Peredovoi Range of the Northern Caucasus.     

Pb isotope composition of granitoids from the Hercynides of the Central Asian orogenic Belt: Evidence for growth of the juvenile crust

Based on study of the Middle Paleozoic (Hercynian) structures of the Central Asian Fold Belt located in Southwest Mongolia, the problem of the sources of juvenile crust growth registered in the Pb isotope composition of postaccretional granitoids is considered. Our study shows that the Pb isotope system of Late Paleozoic granitoids from the Hercynides of the Central Asian Fold Belt provides evidence for the juvenile nature of the continental crust in this region. The evolution of the Pb isotope composition in the Hercynides of Mongolia corresponds to the model parameter μ = 9.25, according to the Stacey–Kramers twostage model. The juvenile source of the Hercynian crust should be characterized by a lower μ value. In addition, according to the Stacey–Kramers two-stage model, the Th/U value in this crust is 3.58.     

Lake-Level Fluctuations and Small-Scale Vegetation Patterns During the Late Glacial in The Netherlands

Late glacial changes in the vegetation were studied in and around a former lake on the southeastern side of a coversand ridge near Milheeze (southern Netherlands). Analyses of microfossils and macroremains and AMS ¹⁴C dating were performed on four sediment cores along a transect from sand ridge to the lake centre. Small-scale vegetation patterns and lake-level fluctuations were reconstructed in detail based on the information provided by the transect. For the first time in The Netherlands, cores along a transect within one lake were used to reconstruct the amplitude of late glacial lake-level fluctuations. Near Milheeze, a small and shallow lake was formed during the Bølling. The large increase in the water level during the Bølling and early Allerød, and the transition to more eutrophic conditions at the start of the Allerød, were probably related to the disappearance of permafrost. During the Allerød, open birch and pine woodlands developed in the area. In the lake, organic deposits accumulated, and the lake size and depth fluctuated. At the start of the Younger Dryas, higher lake water levels were recorded and woodlands became more open as a result of both a drop in the temperature and an increase in the effective precipitation. During the late Younger Dryas the lake water level dropped as the climate became drier and temperatures slightly increased. Accumulation of organic deposits in the lake ceased at the end of the Younger Dryas, which was caused by a drop in the water level in combination with the hydroseral succession process within the lake itself. The climatic signal reflected in the late glacial flora and lake-level fluctuations agree well with other published data from The Netherlands.     

Baroclinic seiches in rotating basins of variable depth in the case of two-layer density stratification

We solve a plane problem of linear baroclinic seiches in closed rotating basins of variable depth with two-layer density stratification. In the long-wave approximation, we get a boundary-value problem for a system of ordinary differential equations and propose a numerical procedure for finding internal seiches. The analytic solutions of the problem are obtained for a basin of constant depth. The numerical analysis of seiches is performed for the distributions of depth corresponding to the zonal and meridional sections of the Black Sea and model basins including the cases of a shelf zone and an underwater ridge. It is shown that the baroclinic seiches become more intense in shallow-water regions and that the intense longshore currents caused by Earth’s rotation are formed in the shelf zones and over the underwater ridges.     

Convection Regime of the Development of an Impulse–Buoyant Transient Jet Submerged in a Homogeneous Fluid

An intergral model of a transient vertical impulse–buoyant jet is suggested. The model contains a universal equation describing the propagation of the upper boundary of the convection front depending on the strength of the point source of buoyancy and momentum. The convective regime of jet propagation is considered, which includes a class of self-similar solutions corresponding to the buoyancy sources, whose strength varies with time following power and exponential laws. The obtained numerical solutions are compared with available experimental data on the profiles of vertical velocity and buoyancy on the jet axis.
