Knowledge of the radial evolution of the coronal mass ejection (CME) is important for the understanding of its arrival at
the near-Earth space and of its interaction with the disturbed/ambient solar wind in the course of its travel to 1 AU and
further. In this paper, the radial evolution of 30 large CMEs (angular width > 150∘, i.e., halo and partial halo CMEs) has been investigated between the Sun and the Earth using (i) the white-light images of
the near-Sun region from the Large Angle Spectroscopic Coronagraph (LASCO) onboard SOHO mission and (ii) the interplanetary scintillation (IPS) images of the inner heliosphere obtained from the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). In the LASCO field of view at heliocentric
distances R≤30 solar radii (R⊙), these CMEs cover an order of magnitude range of initial speeds, VCME≈260–2600 km s−1. Following results have been obtained from the speed evolution of these CMEs in the Sun–Earth distance range: (1) the speed
profile of the CME shows dependence on its initial speed; (2) the propagation of the CME goes through continuous changes,
which depend on the interaction of the CME with the surrounding solar wind encountered on the way; (3) the radial-speed profiles
obtained by combining the LASCO and IPS images yield the factual view of the propagation of CMEs in the inner heliosphere
and transit times and speeds at 1 AU computed from these profiles are in good agreement with the actual measurements; (4)
the mean travel time curve for different initial speeds and the shape of the radial-speed profiles suggest that up to a distance
of ∼80 R⊙, the internal energy of the CME (or the expansion of the CME) dominates and however, at larger distances, the CME's interaction
with the solar wind controls the propagation; (5) most of the CMEs tend to attain the speed of the ambient flow at 1 AU or
further out of the Earth's orbit. The results of this study are useful to quantify the drag force imposed on a CME by the
interaction with the ambient solar wind and it is essential in modeling the CME propagation. This study also has a great importance

We have investigated the central regions of the galaxies in the NGC 3169/NGC 3166/NGC 3156 group with the multipupil fiber spectrograph of the 6-m telescope; the first (central) galaxy in the group is a spiral (Sa) one and the other two galaxies are lenticular ones. The group is known to have an extended HI cloud with a size of more than 100 kpc that is associated in its position, orientation, and rotation with the central galaxy NGC 3169. The mean age of the stellar populations in the centers of all three galaxies has been found to be approximately the same, ~1 Gyr. Since the galaxies are early-type ones and since NGC 3166 and NGC 3156 show no global star formation, we are dealing here with a synchronous star formation burst in the centers of all three galaxies. 相似文献

We report here on unique post-perihelion (2.3 AU) measurements of Comet Hale-Bopp in the FUV-range (950–1250 Å) by means of the UVSTAR spectrometer from the space shuttle with the main purpose of searching for argon and other FUV emitters. New methods for separating the strong airglow emission at shuttle altitudes are here discussed in detail. Due to our low resolution (15 Å) and S/N ratio the possible rocket-borne detection of argon near perihelion (0.9 AU) could not be confirmed. New species as N2 are suspected but difficult to separate from the strong airglow emission at shuttle altitudes. From the Lyα brightness (1.30± 0.08 kRy) a water production rate Q = 5.9 ± 0.4 × 1029 molecules s?1 could be derived and compared with other post-perihelion observations. 相似文献

Global Heliospheric Parameters and Cosmic-Ray Modulation: An Empirical Relation for the Last Decades
We study empirical relations between the modulation of galactic cosmic rays quantified in terms of the modulation potential
and the following global heliospheric parameters: the open solar magnetic flux, the tilt angle of the heliospheric current
sheet, and the polarity of the heliospheric magnetic field. We show that a combination of these parameters explains the majority
of the modulation potential variations during the neutron monitor era 1951 – 2005. Two empirical models are discussed: a quasi-linear
model and a model assuming a power-law relation between the modulation potential and the magnetic flux. Both models describe
the data fairly well. These empirical models provide a simple tool for evaluating various cosmic-ray related effects on different
time scales. The models can be extended backwards in time or used for predictions, if the corresponding global heliospheric

The authors investigate the solution of a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation connected with nonlinear waves. The equation discussed is more general than the one discussed recently by Manne et al. (2000). The results are presented in a compact and elegant form in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions and generalized Mittag-Leffler functions, which are suitable for numerical computation. We report on two ASCA observations of the high-mass X-ray binary pulsar OAO 1657−415. A short observation near mid-eclipse caught the source in a low-intensity state, with a weak continuum and iron emission dominated by the 6.4-keV fluorescent line. A later, longer observation found the source in a high-intensity state and covered the uneclipsed through mid-eclipse phases. In the high-intensity state, the non-eclipse spectrum has an absorbed continuum component due to scattering by material near the pulsar and 80 per cent of the fluorescent iron emission comes from less than 19 light-second away from the pulsar. We find a dust-scattered X-ray halo whose intensity decays through the eclipse. We use this halo to estimate the distance to the source as 7.1 ± 1.3 kpc. 相似文献
