A submersible study has been conducted in February–March 1978 at the axis of the East Pacific Rise near 21°N. The expedition CYAMEX, the first submersible program to be conducted on the East Pacific Rise, is part of the French-American-Mexican project RITA (Rivera-Tamayo), a 3-year study devoted to detailed geological and geophysical investigations of the East Pacific Rise Crest. On the basis of the 15 dives made by CYANA in the axial area of the Rise, a morphological and tectonic zonation can be established for this moderately-fast spreading center. A narrow, 0.6 to 1.2 km wide zone of extrusion (zone 1), dominated by young lava flows, is flanked by a highly fissured and faulted zone of extension (zone 2) with a width of 1 to 2 km. Further out, zone 3 is dominated by outward tilted blocks bounded by inward-facing fault scarps. Active or recent faults extend up to 12 km from the axis of extrusion of the East Pacific Rise. This represents the first determination from direct field evidence of the width of active tectonism associated with an accreting plate boundary. Massive sulfide deposits, made principally of zinc, copper and iron, were found close to the axis of the Rise. Other signs of the intense hydrothermal activity included the discovery of benthic fauna of gian size similar to that found at the axis of the Galapagos Rift. We emphasize the cyclic character of the volcanicity. The main characteristics of the geology of this segment of the East Pacific Rise can be explained by the thermal structure at depth below this moderately-fast spreading center. The geological observations are compatible with the existence of a shallow magma reservoir centered at the axis of the Rise with a half-width of the order of 10 km.  相似文献

Deformation experiments have been carried out to investigate the effect of dynamic recrystallisation on crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) development. Cylindrical samples of natural single crystals of quartz were axially deformed together with 1 vol.% of added water and 20 mg of Mn2O3 powder in a Griggs solid medium deformation apparatus in different crystallographic orientations with compression direction: (i) parallel to <c>, (ii) at 45° to <c> and 45° to <a> and (iii) parallel to <a>. The experiments were performed at a temperature of 800 °C, a confining pressure of 1.2 GPa, a strain rate of  10− 6 s− 1, to bulk finite strains of  14–36%. The deformed samples were analysed in detail using optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two different microstructural domains were distinguished in the deformed samples: (i) domains with undulatory extinction and deformation lamellae, and (ii) domains with new recrystallised grains. Within the domains of undulatory extinction, crystal-plastic deformation caused gradual rotations of the crystal lattice up to  30° away from the host orientation. New recrystallised grains show a strong CPO with c-axis maxima at  45° to the compression direction. This is the case in all experiments, irrespective of the initial crystallographic orientation. The results show that c-axes are not continuously rotated towards the new maxima. The new grains thus developed through a mechanism different from subgrain rotation recrystallisation. New grains have a subeuhedral shape and numerous microcavities, voids, fluid channels and fluid inclusions at their grain boundaries. No host control is recorded in misorientation axes across their large angle grain boundaries. New grains might have been created by nucleation from solution in the μm-scale voids and microfractures. The CPO most likely developed due to preferred growth of the freshly precipitated grains with orientations suitable for intracrystalline deformation at the imposed experimental conditions.  相似文献

Near-critical angle and refraction studies were performed at IFP as piggyback studies during a wider programme of crustal imagery operated by WesternGeco on behalf of the Ministry of Energy of the United Arab Emirates. The main objective is to illuminate the base of the Semail Ophiolite along part of a regional transect (D1) crossing the Northern Emirates from the Gulf of Oman in the east up to the Arabian Gulf in the west. Results confirm that the sole thrust of the ophiolite has been folded during the Miocene stacking of the underlying Arabian Platform. The thickness of the ophiolite grades from zero in the core of the Masafi tectonic window, up to a maximum of 1.7 km below the axial part of a successor basin which has been preserved on top of the serpentinite west of the current exposure of the main ultramafic bodies. Apatite grains extracted from plagiogranites of the Semail ophiolite also provide evidences for an early unroofing of the gabbros and plagiogranites during the Late Cretaceous, with cooling ages of 72–76 Ma at the top of the ophiolite in the east (not far from the Fujairah coast line), which are coeval and also consistent with the occurrence of Late Cretaceous paleo-soils, rudists and paleo-reef deposits on top of serpentinized ultramafics in the west. Younger cooling ages of 20 Ma have been also found at the base of the ophiolite near Masafi, in the core of the nappe anticline, thus providing a Neogene age for the refolding of the allochthon and stacking of underlying parautochthonous platform carbonate units. These results, together with the occurrence of a thick sedimentary pile illuminated below the metamorphic sole along the north-trending, strike-profile D2 running parallel to the axis of the Masafi window, should stimulate a renewal of the exploration in the central part of the Emirate foothills, where the ophiolite thickness is currently limited, and was already drastically reduced by the end of its Late Cretaceous obduction.  相似文献

Atmospheric pollution effects on hydrogen fractionation in trees are demonstrated for the first time in this study. The δ2H ring-cellulose series obtained for black spruce trees at a site near a SO2-emitting smelter display short-term fluctuations superimposed on a first order −11‰ shift coincident with the onset of smelter operations. The isotopic depletion in trees exposed to various levels of SO2 diminish with increasing distance relative to the location of the smelter, and it is not detected at the most distant selected stand, 116 km downwind from the point source. Both the spatial and temporal isotopic trends likely result from the combined effects of leaf transpiration, biochemical processes and water uptake by the root system. The spatial and temporal trends of δ2H values are the reverse of the δ13C trends previously obtained for the same tree ring series. These coupled isotopic fractionations underline an important response of trees to pollution stresses likely generated by ambient atmospheric SO2 concentrations. The degradation of global air quality during the last 150 yr likely generated large scale modifications in the way terrestrial vegetation grows. In this respect, hydrogen dendrogeochemistry combined with other tracers such as C isotope ratios constitutes a new tool to evaluate the past behavior of forest ecosystems in terms of C uptake and acclimation to various types of atmospheric pollution.  相似文献

From April 1993 to March 1994, 135 samples were collected at two sites in the coastal Adriatic Sea, both near (14.5 km) and far (63 km) from the Po River delta. The nutrient(s) limiting algal growth potential (AGP) were estimated by bioassay usingNitzshia closterium (local isolate) andThalassiosira pseudonama (strain 3-H). Estimates were also made by comparing the nutrient molar ratios, ΣN:P and ΣN:Si (whereΣN=NO3 ?+NO2 ?+NH4 ++urea), to the Redfield Ratio (16∶1, 1∶1). According to the bioassay results, phosphorus was the sole nutrient limiting AGP in 2% of the samples and was the most limiting nutrient in 69% of the samples; nitrogen was sole limiting nutrient in 18% of the samples. In 11% of samples, nitrogen and phosphorus were equally co-limiting. Omission of phosphorus from spike enrichments allowed, on average, only a 1.6-fold increase in biomass over that in the unenriched controls. Similar omission of nitrogen allowed a 4-fold increase, while silicon, iron, and micronutrients resulted in 14-fold, 18-fold, and >20-fold increases, respectively. In most of the samples, ΣN:P was much greater than 16, indicating a marked phosphorus deficiency, while ΣN:Si values suggested that silicon was the third most limiting nutrient in 35% of samples. In water collected for from the Po delta, the yield ofN. closterium was not limited by any nutrients other than the three major ones: P, N and Si. In these same waters,T. pseudonana was also potentially limited by iron and, to a lesser extent, by vitamins. The role of iron varied. In samples collected near the Po delta, iron acted as the third most limiting nutrient forN. closterium in June and September; it appeared 29 times out of 78 on the list of potentially limiting nutrients forT. pseudonana, including 5 times as the most limiting. Altogether, comparison with published results suggests that the roles of iron and silicon in AGP limitation have increased during the past three decades, and could become even more important if eutrophication in the Adriatic Sea continues to increase.  相似文献

In the present episode of eruptive activity, evidence from seismicity for sustained magma inflow from depth into the edifice of Piton de la Fournaise is lacking. Pre-eruptive main deformation and shallow seismicity help to identify very small volumes of magma that are in motion beneath the rim of the Dolomieu summit crater, and oriented along the azimuth of the future vents. Small magma pockets may reside in the cone above sea level, or may be expelled repeatedly, due to crystallisation in a small, low-velocity, aseismic region below sea level under the high-velocity central plug of the cone in which pre-eruptive earthquake swarms are located. In cross-section the hypocentres define two steep sheets diverging from the aseismic zone at sea level towards 1.5 km above sea level (or 1 km beneath the 2632 m high cone). However, failure induced by increased pressure in the suggested chamber does not account for the observed focal mechanisms.The occurrence and timing of magma transport are attested by eruption, and seismic activity may be related to magma transport. Focal mechanisms document strike-slip, not normal faulting or tensile failure. Vertical propagation of the edge of a feeder dike may enhance strike-slip motion above the edge, in a region where effective normal stress is decreased by thermally induced groundwater flow. The strike-slip mechanisms could also be caused by a tensile-shear widening of the horizontal section of vertical conduits.Fournaise strike-slip earthquakes occur in two orientations, with P axes orthogonal between them, within a single pre-eruptive event. Earthquakes are distributed in the same volume but mechanisms switch from one to another type systematically with time, indicating a reversal of stress conditions. The orientations of P axes with respect to the epicentral trend suggest that in the later parts of events leading to eruptions, a compression of the medium occurs after a dilation in the first part. The activated zone might respond successively to the arrival and the departure of the magma on its way from the reservoir at depth to the vent, radial to the cone.  相似文献

The optical astrometric data of the years 1962–1982 have been reduced once again at the Bureau International de l’Heure (BIH) in order to redetermine the Earth Rotation Parameters (ERP). This new reduction is based on serie largely revised by the stations since their use in the operational work of theBIH, and on some series which were not available previously. A total of 113 stations is considered, totaling nearly 500,000 measurements of time or latitude. TheERP are determined at five-day intervals. A new approach is developed: the catalog and local errors are analysed and corrected as group unknowns, which values are adjusted together with the main unknowns. The results obtained in the new reduction are compared to other series obtained by astrometry and space geodesy.  相似文献

A study of hydrothermal vein mineralization in meta-argillites subjected to high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphism reveals that ferromagnesian (e.g., chlorite) and pure aluminosilicate (e.g., pyrophyllite) mineralization can be correlated with regimes of increasing and decreasing temperature, respectively. An experimental study of the transport of silica, aluminum and magnesium in hydrothermal solutions has been undertaken to simulate variations in the physical conditions during metamorphism and the accompanying mass transport in a closed system. Thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the experimental results indicates that local equilibrium among aqueous and mineral phases controls the distribution and composition of hydrothermal vein mineralization and that vein mineralogy can be used to infer the sense of variation of pressure and temperature during metamorphism.  相似文献

Summary Smoothing time series of measurements is usually employed to remove high frequency noise when it is necessary to interpolate them for dates where no measurements are available, and also in an attempt to free the series from their short-term instability in order to provide an improved representation of the measured quantity. Two methods are currently used in connection with the Earth's rotation studies: Vondrak's algorithm and a moving average with a Gaussian weighting function [Gaussian smoothing). This study describes their behaviour in terms of frequency filtering and of the response in the time domain. Examples of their application to the Earth Rotation Parameters are given.  相似文献
