To obtain improved maps of the coronal electron density distribution we have devised an iterative technique in which an approximation of the unknown distribution is successively modified to reduce discrepancies with the original data. With this technique we can now map the corona to a much finer resolution than shown in our previous papers, without greatly increasing the computational cost. The series representation of density may now contain more than 23 000 terms compared with previous limit of 128. This results in a fourfold increase in linear resolution, so that features about a tenth of a solar radius in width are now separated. The iteration algorithm can be adjusted to apply a mathematically optimal correction to a given approximation of the density. Although this correction minimizes noise levels, a cheaper version of the algorithm yields a better result.  相似文献

During the hot summer of 2003, reduction of an ice field in the Swiss Alps (Schnidejoch) uncovered spectacular archaeological hunting gear, fur, leather and woollen clothing and tools from four distinct windows of time: Neolithic Age (4900 to 4450 cal. yr BP), early Bronze Age (4100–3650 cal. yr BP), Roman Age (1st–3rd century AD), and Medieval times (8–9th century AD and 14–15th century AD). Transalpine routes connecting northern Italy with the northern Alps during these slots is consistent with late Holocene maximum glacier retreat. The age cohorts of the artefacts are separated which is indicative of glacier advances when the route was difficult and not used for transit. The preservation of Neolithic leather indicates permanent ice cover at that site from ca. 4900 cal. yr BP until AD 2003, implying that the ice cover was smaller in 2003 than at any time during the last 5000 years. Current glacier retreat is unprecedented since at least that time. This is highly significant regarding the interpretation of the recent warming and the rapid loss of ice in the Alps. The error caused by using the Honkasalo tidal gravity term in geoid computations with Stokes' formula is discussed. It is pointed out that the relatively large value of the error to a great extent is generated by interaction between the Honkasalo term and the weight function in Stokes' formula.  相似文献

The third and fourth statistical moments, that is, skewness and kurtosis, are compared for daily maximum temperature in summer and daily minimum temperature in winter between observations, outputs of two global climate models, four versions of statistical downscaling, and weather generator. The comparison is performed at six stations in central Europe. None of the simulation models can be considered as superior to the others. Causes of a good correspondence with and differences from observations are identified e.g. in the treatment of physics in the models, imperfections in physical parameterizations, or a linear transfer of properties from predictors onto predictands in statistical downscaling.  相似文献
