Kråkenes faces the open sea on the west coast of Norway. During the Younger Dryas a cirque glacier deposited a large outer and a smaller inner moraine in a cirque at the site and melt-water entered a small lake depositing glaciolacustrine sediments. The glaciolacustrine succession can be divided into three sub-units corresponding to the advance, the still-stand and the retreat phases of the glacier. The sediment succession contains both varves and other types of rhythmites, the latter being mainly deposited as turbidity underflows caused by localized slumping events. Lee-side accumulation of snow by wind and avalanching into the cirque was crucial to form and maintain the cirque glacier once summer temperatures were low enough. At maximum, the glacier likely was in equilibrium with climate. The initial retreat from the maximum position might have been triggered by fall-out of volcanic ash from Iceland, but the continued retreat was due to increased ablation season temperatures. The most rapid change in climate at the Younger Dryas/Preboreal transition occurred after the cirque glacier had melted away completely. 相似文献

An integrated data-directed numerical method has been developed to estimate the undiscovered mineral endowment within a given area. The method has been used to estimate the undiscovered uranium endowment in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico, U.S.A. The favorability of uranium concentration was evaluated in each of 2,068 cells defined within the Basin. Favorability was based on the correlated similarity of the geologic characteristics of each cell to the geologic characteristics of five area-related deposit models. Estimates of the undiscovered endowment for each cell were categorized according to deposit type, depth, and cutoff grade. The method can be applied to any mineral or energy commodity provided that the data collected reflect discovered endowment. 相似文献

During the Late Weichselian, large marginal moraines were deposited in the Norwegian fjords. In Troms County these features are termed the Skarpnes and Tromsø-Lyngen moraines, respectively, and have been mapped from land into the marine environment where they were formed as ice-contact submarine fans. High-resolution seismic data from several fjords have been studied and reveal a typical sediment thickness of 150–320 m for these ice-contact systems. All of the ice-contact submarine fans were formed under similar climatic conditions, but display wide variation in geometry, architecture and seismic pattern. This variation is related to differences in sediment supply, the nature of the subsurface of the fan (e.g. position of thresholds), basin geometry and basin depth. Based on interpretation of the different seismic facies and the architecture of the fans, former ice-front positions have been suggested and a model has been presented for the formation of different types of ice-contact submarine fans dependent upon variation in local basin condition. 相似文献

The arc-front volcanoes of Sumisu (31·5°N, 140°E)and Torishima (30·5°N, 140·3°E) in thecentral Izu–Bonin arc are similar in size and rise asrelatively isolated edifices from the seafloor. Together theyprovide valuable along-arc information about magma generationprocesses. The volcanoes have erupted low-K basalts originatingfrom both wet and dry parental basaltic magmas (low-Zr basaltsand high-Zr basalts, respectively). Based on models involvingfluid-immobile incompatible element ratios (La/Sm), the parentalbasalts appear to result from different degrees of partial meltingof the same source mantle (20% and 10% for wet and dry basaltmagmas, respectively). Assuming that the wet basalts containgreater abundances of slab-derived components than their drycounterparts, geochemical comparison of these two basalt typespermits the identification of the specific elements involvedin fluid transport from the subducting slab. Using an extensiveset of new geochemical data from Torishima, where the top ofthe downgoing slab is about 100 km deep, we find that Cs, Pb,and Sr are variably enriched in the low-Zr basalts, which cannotbe accounted for by fractional crystallization or by differencesin the degree of mantle melting. These elements are interpretedto be selectively concentrated in slab-derived metasomatic fluids.Variations in K, high field strength element and rare earthelement concentrations are readily explained by variations inthe degree of melting between the low- and high-Zr basalts;these elements are not contained in the slab-derived fluids.Rb and Ba exhibit variable behaviour in the low-Zr basalts,ranging from immobile, similar to K, to mildly enriched in somelow-Zr basalts. We suggest that the K-rich mica, phengite, playsan important role in determining the composition of fluids releasedfrom the downgoing slab. In arc-front settings, where slab depthis 100 km, phengite is stable, and the fluids released fromthe slab contain little K. In back-arc settings, however, wherethe slab is at 100–140 km depth, phengite is unstable,and K-rich fluids are released. We conclude that cross-arc variationsin the K content of arc basalts are probably related to differingcompositions of released fluids or melts rather than the widelyheld view that such variations are controlled by the degreeof partial melting. Isotopic and geochemical data of the Zerenda series metamorphic rocks from the Kokchetav massif are reported. Some of these
rocks contain microdiamond inclusions in garnets and other indicators of ultrahigh pressure metamorphism (P > 40 kbar, T = 900–1000 °C). The diamond-bearing rocks exhibit distinctive geochemical characteristics compared to typical crustal rocks.
The REE patterns range from LREE depleted to slightly LREE enriched [chondrite normalized (La/Yb)N– 0.1–5.4] with a negative Eu anomaly. They are depleted in incompatible elements (e.g. Sr, Ba, U, Th) with respect to the
upper crust. In contrast non-diamondiferous rocks of the Zerenda series exhibit normal crustal geochemistry. All rocks of
the Zerenda series have very radiogenic lead isotopes. The measured μ values (238U/204Pb) compared with those calculated for the interval between crust formation and ultrahigh pressure (UHP) metamorphism suggest a decrease by factors of up to 200 during the UHP metamorphism. The Sm-Nd mineral isochrons from the diamond-bearing rocks and other rock types of the Zerenda series give
a Middle Cambrian (524–535 Ma) age of metamorphism. The Nd model ages show that crust formation occurred about 2.3 Ga ago.
Significant fractionation of Sm and Nd and loss of incompatible elements may be due to partial melting of the protoliths.
The Ar-Ar age determinations of secondary biotite and muscovite from the diamond-bearing rocks yield an age of 517 ± 5 Ma.
This cooling age requires a short time interval between UHP metamorphism and uplift to a crustal level. Ultrahigh pressure metamorphism might be a significant source of Pb for the mantle.
We propose that the radiogenic Pb of the oceanic array is the contamination traces of numerous UHP events. Beside the geological aspect we demonstrate a method of dating a high grade metamorphic terrain using Nd isotopes.
We compare whole rock isochrons and mineral isochrons and in this way get some insight into the behaviour of the Sm-Nd system
during very high grade metamorphic events.

The equilibrium thickness of the isothermal layers of interstellar gas and volume gas densities ρ gas in the plane of the disk as a function of galactocentric distance R are computed for seven spiral galaxies (including the Milky Way) using an axisymmetrical model. In this model, the thickness of the stellar disk varies with R and remains approximately equal to the minimum thickness of a stable equilibrium disk. We found the disk thickness to increase toward the periphery in at least five of the seven galaxies. The density of the stellar disk decreases with R faster than ρ gas , so that gas dominates at the disk peripheries in terms of density. A comparison of the azimuthally averaged star formation rate SFR and the gas density shows the absence of a universal Schmidt law SFR ~ρ gas n for galaxies. However, the SFRs in various galaxies are better correlated with the volume than the gas surface density. The parameter n in the Schmidt law formally calculated using the least-squares method lies in the interval 0.8–2.4, being, on average, close to 1.5. The values of n calculated separately for the molecular gas display substantial scatter, but are, on average, close to unity. The value of n appears to increase with decreasing ρ gas , so that the fraction of gas that actively participates in star formation decreases with n. 相似文献

An isotope-geochronological study of young magmatism in the central part of the Greater Caucasus (Kazbek neovolcanic area) on the territory of Russia and Georgia has been carried out. It was proved for the first time that, in the Early Pleistocene, there was a separate impulse of magmatic activity in this area. The area of endogenic activity for the period identified was contoured on the basis of the integrated isotope-geochronological, petrological-geochemical, and geological data. It has been shown that the Early Pleistocene volcanism inherits the area of Neogene volcanism in the Kazbek region and, therefore, presents the final impulse of the second (Pliocene) stage of the Late Cenozoic magmatism. Thus, Early Pleistocene volcanism was not a precursor of Late Quaternary magmatism as the latter has other spatial patterns of the location of volcanic centers. 相似文献
