Rhyolitic pumices in the 26.5 ka Oruanui eruption (Taupo volcano, New Zealand) contain an average of 10 wt% crystals. About 2 wt% of the crystal population is feldspar crystals that display bluish–grey cloudy cores, the colour being imparted by exsolved needles of rutile. The volume of cloudy-cored feldspars thus amounts to ~1.0 km3 in a total magma volume of ~530 km3. The cored feldspars show great variability in detail, but in general have a rounded cloudy core bounded by a zone rich in glass and mineral inclusions, that was then overgrown by a euhedral clear rim. Sr-isotopic variations in eight representative crystals were measured on micromilled samples of selected growth zones in the cores and rims, and linked to feldspar compositions through microprobe traverses. The cloudy cores range from 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70547 to 0.70657, with compositions of An43 to An78. The overgrowth rims display wider variations: inner parts show extreme ranges in composition (maxima 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70764 and An78), while outer parts in seven of eight crystals are zoned, with outward-decreasing Sr-isotopic and An values to figures that are in accord with the bulk pumice and other, clear-feldspar values, respectively. The three parts of the crystals represent distinct regimes. The cloudy cores are inherited from an intermediate plutonic protolith that has been subjected to melting. The inner overgrowth rims were crystallised from a high temperature, relatively radiogenic melt derived from Mesozoic-Palaeozoic metasedimentary rocks (“greywacke”). The outer euhedral rims reflect mixing into and continued growth within the growing Oruanui magma body. The cloudy-cored feldspars also contain rare zircon inclusions. Twenty one zircons were recovered by HF digestion of a bulk sample of cloudy feldspars and analysed by SHRIMP for U–Th isotopes with which to calculate model ages. Eighteen of 21 crystals returned finite ages, the model-age spectrum of which is similar to the age spectra from free zircons in Oruanui pumices. Assembly of the Oruanui magma body was not only rapid (over ~40 kyr, as shown by other data) but involved a wide open system, with significant contributions from partly-melted intermediate-composition igneous intrusions (cloudy cores) and greywacke melts (inner overgrowths) being introduced into the magma body up to the point of eruption. Such open system behaviour contrasts with that proposed in models for comparably voluminous silicic magmas derived dominantly by fractionation (such as the Bishop Tuff) where the magma and its crystal cargo were better insulated thermally and chemically from country-rock interaction.  相似文献

This work analysed the spatio-temporal variation of snow cover on the Kraków Ice Field, located in the King George Island, Antarctica. High spatial resolution images of COSMO-SkyMed were used in this study. These X-band images are vertically and horizontally co-polarized and their intensity data were converted to amplitude (dB). The COSMO-SkyMed images were classified by a minimum distance algorithm and post-classified based on knowledge of adjacency relationships of snow zones. Hypsometric, slope, aspect and solar radiation maps to support the interpretation of backscatter patterns in the COSMO-SkyMed images. Three radar zones were classified in these images: percolation, slush and wet snow radar zone. Positive surface air temperatures and rainfall events, registered from a meteorological station, lead to increase in wet snow and slush zones. The COSMO-SkyMed images and minimum distance algorithm were adequate to discriminate the snow cover and to assess the supraglacial melting pattern during the ablation season in the study area.  相似文献

The production of anomalously differentiated lava compositions at several mid-ocean spreading centers can be attributed to magmatic processes associated with propagating rifts. The degree of differentiation attained by magmas beneath oceanic spreading ridges depends mainly on the balance between cooling rate and the supply rate of new magma to shallow chambers. Low supply rates and moderate cooling rates allow advanced degrees of closed-system fractionation to occur. High supply rates result in open systems in which magma compositions are buffered by frequent replenishment with new hot magma. Propagating rift tips are a special class of ridge-transform intersection in which the balance between cooling and supply rates is conducive to the development of advanced degrees of differentiation over an expanded length of ridge. This balance is affected by the spreading rate, the propagation rate of the rift, the length of the bounding transform and proximity to hotspots. Maximum compositional variability and maximum degree of differentiation occur within 50 km of propagating rift tips and subsequently diminish with increasing distance. Rifts that propagate through plates in directions approximating their absolute motion relative to the lower mantle are characterized by the presence of anomalously differentiated lavas over longer ridge segments than are rifts that propagate against their absolute motion. Geochemical anomalies may persist, though changing in degree and extent, for several million years on ridge segments that stop propagating. The concept of “magnetic telechemistry” is generally supported by our study, but in the vicinity of hotspots, magnetic anomaly amplitude may be controlled more by bathymetric and/or thickened magnetic layer effects than by geochemistry.  相似文献

Core drilling of near surface seams near Wakefield NSW has provided high volatile bituminous coal samples that have been subject to varying degrees of natural in situ oxidation. Five levels of oxidation have been defined, mainly on visual evidence, ranging from unoxidised coal to highly oxidised material. Samples of each oxidation level have been investigated by chemical analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid state carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) with cross-polarization and magic angle spinning.The results show that mineral matter, moisture and oxygen content increase with oxidation, whereas carbon, hydrogen and specific energy decrease. Moisture determination is suggested as a quick, facile method for indicating the oxidation level for a coal sample from this seam. FTIR showed a marked loss of aliphatic C-H groups with increasing oxidation, and an increase in carbonyl and carboxylate groups. Aromatic C-H groups were much less affected by oxidation. Solid state carbon-13 NMR showed increasing carbon aromaticity with oxidation, but showed substantial carbonyl carbon only at the highest oxidation level. No evidence was found for an increase in aromatic substituents during oxidation; if anything, there is a small decrease in substituents.  相似文献

Three case studies from New Mexico illustrate methods by which aquifers can be classified for purposes of the Federal Underground Injection Control program. The principal technique involves preparation of hydrogeologic maps or cross sections which display information on the permeability of rock units and the dissolved solids content of formation fluids. Because deep water wells are lacking in most areas, the analysis normally requires considerable interpretation of geological and geophysical logs collected by energy and mineral companies, plus use of a general model or concept about regional hydrogeology. Injection of waste fluids into aquifers containing water with less than 10,000 mg/1 dissolved solids is not allowed unless an exemption is justified by economic, engineering and other factors. Based on the case studies, regulatory exemptions will be possible for aquifers which are hydrocarbon or mineral-producing, or which are important for brine disposal purposes.  相似文献

Strong-motion accelerograms obtained on the San Juan Bautista 156/101 Separation Bridge during the 6 August 1979 Coyote Lake, California, earthquake are used to examine the response of this multiple-span bridge to moderate levels of earthquake loading. Although the bridge was not damaged, the records are of significant engineering interest as they are the first to be recorded on a highway bridge structure in North America. A technique of system identification is used to determine optimal modal parameters for linear models which can closely replicate the observed time-domain seismic response of the bridge. Time variations in frequency and damping in the horizontal response are identified using a moving-window analysis. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed to study the bridge response in detail. The first two horizontal modal frequencies computed from this model are in excellent agreement with information obtained during the system identification analysis provided the finite element model's expansion joints are locked, preventing relative translational motions from occurring across the joints. Locking is confirmed by the observed seismic deformations of the structure in the fundamental mode. Fundamental vertical frequencies of the individual spans, predicted by the finite element model, are in very good agreement with ambient vibration test data.  相似文献
