Deforestation and mining activities have proven to be very damaging to rivers because these activities disturb the environmental characteristics of rivers. Thus, the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), and Chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a) were measured monthly during 2 hydrological years in the Maroni and Oyapock Rivers to assess the dynamics and fluxes of organic carbon and nitrogen in these 2 Guiana Shield basins, which have been strongly (Maroni) and weakly (Oyapock) impacted by deforestation and mining activities. The 2‐year time series show that DOC, POC, PN, and Chl‐a concentrations vary seasonally with discharge in both rivers, indicating a hydrologically dominated control. Temporal patterns of DOC, POC, and PN indicate that these variables show maximum concentrations in rising waters due to the yield of organic matter and nitrogen accumulated in soils, which are incorporated into the rivers during rainfall. However, the Chl‐a concentrations were at a maximum during low‐water stages. The C/N and C/Chl‐a ratios also showed a seasonal trend, with lower values during the low water periods due to an increase in algal biomass. During high water, the POC in both rivers is the result of terrestrial organic matter, whereas during low‐water autochthonous organic matter can reach up to 34% of the POC. The mean annual fluxes of TOC and PN were higher (4.56 × 105 tonC year?1 and 1.77 × 104 tonN year?1, respectively) in the Maroni River than those (1.84 × 105 tonC year?1 and 0.54 × 104 tonN year?1, respectively) in the Oyapock River. However, the specific fluxes of DOC, POC, and PN from both basins were nearly the same. Although gold mining activities are performed in both basins, there is no conclusive evidence regarding the impact of these activities on the dynamics of organic matter and particulate nitrogen in the Maroni and Oyapock Rivers.  相似文献

The scan-line corrector (SLC) for the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) sensor, on board the Landsat 7 satellite, failed permanently in 2003. The consequence of the SLC failure (or SLC-off) is that about 20% of the pixels in an ETM+ image are not scanned. We aim to develop a geostatistical method that estimates the missing values. Our rationale is to collect three cloud-free images for a particular Landsat scene, taken within a few weeks of each other: the middle image is the target whose un-scanned locations we wish to estimate; the earlier and later images are used as secondary information. We visit each un-scanned location in the target image and, for each reflectance band in turn, predict the missing value with cokriging (resorting to kriging when there is not enough local secondary information to justify cokriging). For three Landsat scenes in different bio-regions of Queensland, Australia, we compared the performance of geostatistical interpolation with image compositing. Geostatistics was a generally superior estimator. In contrast to compositing, geostatistics was able to estimate accurately values at all un-scanned locations, and was able to quantify the variance associated with each prediction. SLC-off images interpolated with geostatistics were visually sensible, although changes in land-use from pixel to pixel affected adversely the accuracy of prediction. The primary disadvantage of geostatistics was its relatively slow computing speed. We recommend the geostatistical method over compositing, but, if speed takes priority over statistical rigour, a hybrid technique–whereby composites are corrected to the local means and variances of the bands in the target image, and any un-estimable locations are interpolated geostatistically–is an adequate compromise.  相似文献

High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) imagery and digital elevation models of the Candor Chasma region of Valles Marineris, Mars, reveal prominent and distinctive positive-relief knobs amidst light-toned layers. Three classifications of knobs, Types 1, 2, and 3, are distinguished from a combination of HiRISE and Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) images based on physical expressions (geometries, spatial relationships), and spectral data from Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). Type 1 knobs are abundant, concentrated, topographically resistant features with their highest frequency in West Candor, which have consistent stratigraphic correlations of the peak altitude (height). These Type 1 knobs could be erosional remnants of a simple dissected terrain, possibly derived from a more continuous, resistant, capping layer of pre-existing material diagenetically altered through recrystallization or cementation. Types 2 and 3 knobs are not linked to a single stratigraphic layer and are generally solitary to isolated, with variable heights. Type 3 are the largest knobs at nearly an order of magnitude larger than Type 1 knobs. The variable sizes and occasional pits on the tops of Type 2 and 3 knobs suggest a different origin, possibly related to more developed erosion, preferential cementation, or textural differences from sediment/water injection or intrusion, or from a buried impact crater. Enhanced color HiRISE images show a brown coloration of the knob peak crests that is attributable to processing and photometric effects; CRISM data do not show any detectable spectral differences between the knobs and the host rock layers, other than albedo. These intriguing knobs hold important clues to deducing relative rock properties, timing of events, and weathering conditions of Mars history.  相似文献

The depiction of pristine countryside in New Zealand film has engendered a cultural disconnection with the environmental stories within the landscape. In this essay, we briefly examined the meaning of rural New Zealand landscape and its role in film. This research was done in part by making a short documentary, River Dog, a film about the rural New Zealand landscape. The character, plot and underlying message of River Dog were framed within visually relevant archetypes to form a constructive environmental message. Here, we examined River Dog's use of empathetic storytelling, an approach used to communicate an environmental issue without promulgating science or politics.  相似文献

Polygonal crack systems with domal microrelief imaged by the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity show remarkable similarity to terrestrial crack systems developed on outcrop surfaces. Study of Jurassic Navajo Sandstone surfaces show development of crack systems in relatively isotropic host rock as a result of tensile weathering stresses. These terrestrial analogs are utilized to understand potential weathering processes on Mars.  相似文献

This study illustrates a methodology to assess the economic impacts of climate change at a city scale and benefits of adaptation, taking the case of sea level rise and storm surge risk in the city of Copenhagen, capital of Denmark. The approach is a simplified catastrophe risk assessment, to calculate the direct costs of storm surges under scenarios of sea level rise, coupled to an economic input–output (IO) model. The output is a risk assessment of the direct and indirect economic impacts of storm surge under climate change, including, for example, production and job losses and reconstruction duration, and the benefits of investment in upgraded sea defences. The simplified catastrophe risk assessment entails a statistical analysis of storm surge characteristics, geographical-information analysis of population and asset exposure combined with aggregated vulnerability information. For the city of Copenhagen, it is found that in absence of adaptation, sea level rise would significantly increase flood risks. Results call for the introduction of adaptation in long-term urban planning, as one part of a comprehensive strategy to manage the implications of climate change in the city. Mitigation policies can also aid adaptation by limiting the pace of future sea level rise.  相似文献

The differences between the crabs Cyclograpsus lavauxi (Milne Edwards, 1853) and C. insularum (Campbell and Griffin, 1966) are outlined. Cyclograpsus lavauxi has long been known to be very common in New Zealand, but C insularum was considered very rare and had been collected only six times since 1929.

In 1970, 60 spot surveys in the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand revealed 14 new populations of Cyclograpsus insularum.

Both species are found under boulders high on the beach. Cyclograpsus lavauxi occurs at maximum density higher on the shore than the maximum numbers of C. insularum, but the zones overlap widely. Cyclograpsus insularum occurs on substrates of smaller sand and silt content than those on which C. lavauxi is found.  相似文献
