The distribution of perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in the environment is well documented with higher concentrations observed in wildlife located in industrial and urban areas. This study examined the distribution of PFCs in relation to land use using blood samples collected from bottlenose dolphins during capture-release health assessment surveys conducted in Charleston, SC. The study area was partitioned into three subareas (ACW, CHS, and SRE) based upon habitat and land use characteristics. The ACW and CHS subareas are characterized by high degrees of industrial and urban land uses, while the SRE subarea is more residential and characterized by a lower degree of developed land use. Long-term monitoring data from photo-identification surveys were used to group bottlenose dolphins based on their proportions of sightings in the different subareas. Dolphins affiliated with both the ACW and CHS subareas were observed to have significantly higher mean plasma concentrations of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) than those affiliated with the SRE subarea. Dolphins affiliated with the ACW subarea were found to have a significantly higher mean plasma concentration of PFUnA than those affiliated with the CHS subarea. Further examination of the distribution of the PFCs revealed positive correlations with developed land uses and negative correlations with wetland/marsh land cover. A positive correlation was also observed between PFUnA and agricultural land use. The variability and scale of the observed contaminant burdens have important implications for the conservation and management of living marine resources and illustrates the importance of long-term monitoring of free-ranging wildlife species. 相似文献

Soil models based on kinematic hardening together with elements of bounding surface plasticity, provide a means of introducing some memory of recent history and stiffness variation in the predicted response of soils. Such models provide an improvement on simple elasto‐plastic models in describing soil behaviour under non‐monotonic loading. Routine use of such models requires robust numerical integration schemes. Explicit integration of highly non‐linear models requires extremely small steps in order to guarantee convergence. Here, a fully implicit scheme is presented for a simple kinematic hardening extension of the Cam clay soil model. The algorithm is based on the operator split methodology and the implicit Euler backward integration scheme is proposed to integrate the rate form of the constitutive relations. This algorithm maintains a quadratic rate of asymptotic convergence when used with a Newton–Raphson iterative procedure. An enigma of the Colorado Plateau high desert is the “pothole”, which ranges from shallow ephemeral puddles to deeply carved
pools. The existence of prokaryotic to eukaryotic organisms within these pools is largely controlled by the presence of collected
rainwater. Multivariate statistical analysis of physical and chemical limnologic data variables measured from potholes indicates
spatial and temporal variations, particularly in water depth, manganese, iron, nitrate and sulfate concentrations and salinity.
Variation in water depth and salinity are likely related to the amount of time since the last precipitation, whereas the other
variables may be related to redox potential. The spatial and temporal variations in water chemistry affect the distribution
of organisms, which must adapt to daily and seasonal extremes of fluctuating temperature (0–60 °C), pH changes of as much
as 5 units over 12 days, and desiccation. For example, many species become dormant when potholes dry, in order to endure intense
heat, UV radiation, desiccation and freezing, only to flourish again upon rehydration. But the pothole organisms also have
a profound impact on the potholes. Through photosynthesis and respiration, pothole organisms affect redox potential, and indirectly
alter the water chemistry. Laboratory examination of dried biofilm from the potholes revealed that within 2 weeks of hydration,
the surface of the desiccated, black biofilm became green from cyanobacterial growth, which supported significant growth in
heterotrophic bacterial populations. This complex biofilm is persumably responsible for dissolving the cement between the
sandstone grains, allowing the potholes to enlarge, and for sealing the potholes, enabling them to retain water longer than
the surrounding sandstone. Despite the remarkable ability of life in potholes to persist, desert potholes may be extremely
sensitive to anthropogenic effects. The unique limnology and ecology of Utah potholes holds great scientific value for understanding
water–rock–biological interactions with possible applications to life on other planetary bodies. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations in pore water compositions are characterized for a deep regolith profile developed on a marine terrace chronosequence near Santa Cruz California. Variations are resolved in terms of the dominance of either a lithogenic process, i.e. chemical weathering, or a biogenic process, i.e. plant nutrient cycling. Early Cretaceous (146–115 Ma) magmatism in the region of Mt. Hermon, Northern Israel, is part of an extensive Mesozoic igneous
province within the Levant associated with the evolution of the Neotethyan passive margin of Gondwana. The initial stages
of activity were characterised by the emplacement of tholeiitic dykes (146–140 Ma) which were uplifted and eroded prior to
the eruption of a sequence of alkali basalts, basanites and more differentiated alkaline lavas and pyroclastics from 127 to
120 Ma. The latest stages of activity (120–115 Ma) were highly explosive, resulting in the emplacement of diatreme breccias.
Trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data for the most primitive Early Cretaceous mafic igneous rocks sampled suggest that they
were derived by mixing of melts derived by variable degrees of partial melting of both garnet- and spinel-peridotite-facies
mantle sources. Though isotopically heterogeneous, the source of the magmas has many similarities to that of HIMU oceanic
island basalts. Earlier Liassic (200 Ma) transitional basalts and Neogene–Quaternary (15–0 Ma) alkali basalts erupted within
northern Israel also have HIMU affinities. The petrogenesis of the Early Cretaceous and Cenozoic basalts is explained by partial
melting of a lithospheric mantle protolith metasomatically enriched during the Liassic volcanic phase, which may be plume-related.

Concentrations of CO2 in soil atmosphere and CO2 efflux were measured across a marine terrace soil chronosequence near Santa Cruz, California. Soil development, specifically the formation of an argillic horizon, has created a two-tier soil gas profile in the older terrace soils. The soil above the argillic horizon has seasonal variations in soil CO2 associated with plant respiration. The older soils with dense argillic horizons maintain a year round ~1%CO2 below the argillic horizon. The CO2efflux during the growing season is higher on the older terraces. 相似文献

Regional climate projections in the Pacific region are potentially sensitive to a range of existing model biases. This study examines the implications of coupled model biases on regional climate projections in the tropical western Pacific. Model biases appear in the simulation of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, the location and movement of the South Pacific Convergence Zone, rainfall patterns, and the mean state of the ocean–atmosphere system including the cold tongue bias and erroneous location of the edge of the Western Pacific warm pool. These biases are examined in the CMIP3 20th century climate models and used to provide some context to the uncertainty in interpretations of regional-scale climate projections for the 21st century. To demonstrate, we provide examples for two island nations that are located in different climate zones and so are affected by different biases: Nauru and Palau. We discuss some of the common approaches to analyze climate projections and whether they are effective in reducing the effect of model biases.
