It has previously been shown that application of the “gradient method” to simultaneous recordings of geomagnetic pulsation fields at two stations on a meridian can determine the resonant frequency of a magnetic field line, and that the distribution of resonant frequencies along the meridian can be calculated from three stations. It is shown here that if the D-component spectrum of the pulsations is taken to be a representation of the driving wave, the same information can be derived from one and two station measurements, respectively, albeit with some slight loss of accuracy. It is also suggested that the empirical method of inferring the intensity of the interplanetary magnetic field from the measurement of the period of ground magnetic pulsations would be more accurate if D-component observations only were used.  相似文献

Summary. The average geomagnetic pole position consistent with the magnetization of the Newer Volcanics of Victoria, which are for the most part of Pleistocene age, coincides with the present geographic pole just as do all pole determinations from Miocene and later rock formations from the Northern Hemisphere. During this time it appears that the Earth's magnetic field has approximated, on average, to that of a geocentric axial dipole and that the land masses concerned have maintained their present positions. In contrast, the pole determined from Lower Tertiary Volcanics of Victoria does not agree with the geographic pole nor with equivalent determinations from the Northern Hemisphere, suggesting that the relative positions of the continents may have been different in the past.  相似文献

An analysis was made of a complex large amplitude Pc 4 micropulsation, of four hours duration around local noon, observed at five ground stations in the United Kingdom (2.4? L ?3.8). The final pulsation waveform was shown to be the results of the superposition of wave packets of different periods. The meridional variation of the amplitude of the different period wavepackets was consistent with their being fundamental “toroidal” field line resonances within the plasmasphere, rotated through 90° in their transmission through the ionosphere in accordance with recent theoretical predictions. Other predicted ionospheric effects, such as the loss of the sense-of-polarization reversal across the amplitude maximum, were apparent in the meridional variation of the polarization characteristics.  相似文献

Summary The stability of pargasitic amphibole in the upper mantle is a function of water content and bulk rock composition, and under water-undersaturated conditions, the stability of amphibole controls the solidus position. Experiments in the system Tinaquillo peridotite +0.2% H2O, a refractory peridotite under water-undersaturated conditions, show that amphibole is stable to 1030°C and 26 kb. In contrast, pargasitic amphibole is stable to 1150°C and 30 kb in Hawaiian pyrolite, a more fertile peridotite composition. This indicates that under water-undersaturated conditions, the most fertile part of a crystallizing mantle diapir with an inhomogeneous composition will solidify first while a more refractory component will contain an alkali-rich melt which will have the ability to metasomatize adjacent regions. The relative stabilities of amphibole in refractory and fertile bulk compositions may result in increasing rather than diminishing chemical contrasts in high temperature lherzolite, i.e. a process of metamorphic differentiation. Ti, Fe, Al and Na metasomatism can therefore be considered a normal occurrence associated with the upward migration and solidification of an H2O-bearing mantle diapir.
Der Einfluß der Gesamtgesteins-Zusammensetzung auf die Stabilität von Amphibol im oberen Mantel: Bedeutung für Solidus-Positionen und Mantel-Metasomatose
Zusammenfassung Die Stabilität pargasitischer Amphibole im oberen Mantel ist eine Funktion von Wassergehalt und Gesamtgesteins-Zusammensetzung. Unter wasser-untersättigten Bedingungen, kontrolliert die Stabilität von Amphibol die Solidus-Position. Experimente in dem System Tinaquillo Peridotit +0,2% H2O, einem refraktären Peridotit unter wasser-untersättigten Bedingungen, zeigen daß Amphibol bis 1030°C und 26 Kb stabil ist. Im Gegensatz dazu ist pargasitische Hornblende in einem Hawaii-Pyrolit, von mehr fertiler Peridotit-Zuammensetzung, bis 1150°C und 30 Kb stabil. Das zeigt, daß bei wasser-untersättigten Bedingungen der am meisten produktive Teil eines kristallisierenden Mantel-Diapirs mit inhomogener Zusammensetzung sich zuerst verfestigen wird, während eine mehr refraktäre Komponente eine alkali-reiche Schmelze enthalten wird, die wiederum die Fähigkeit hat, umliegende Bereiche metasomatisch zu beeinflussen. Die relativen Stabilitäten von Amphibol in refraktären und fertilen Gesamtzusammensetzungen können dazu führen, daß die chemischen Gegensätze in Hochtemperaturlherzoliten eher zunehmen als abnehmen, d. h. ein Prozeß metamorpher Differentiation. Ti, Fe, Al und Na Metasomatose können deshalb als ein verbreiteter Vorgang, der mit der Aufwärtsbewegung und Verfestigung eines H2O-führenden Mantel-Diapirs assoziiert ist, betrachtet werden.

The SAS® computer software system, widely used and respected for its capabilities in statistical analysis and data base management, now includes a new set of graphic and cartographic procedures called SAS GRAPH?. We have used these cartographic procedures in research on mapping ethno-cultural census data from metropolitan areas in Ontario and in undergraduate and graduate courses in computer cartography. On the basis of that experience, we describe and evaluate SAS/GRAPH'S cartographic capabilities and illustrate with maps drawn by various devices.  相似文献

Wind-tunnel simulations of neutrally-stable atmospheric boundary-layer flow over an isolated, low hill (Askervein) have been carried out at three different length scales in two wind-tunnel facilities. The objectives of these simulations were to assess the reliability with which changes in mean wind and turbulence structure induced by the prototype hill on boundary-layer flow can be reproduced in the wind tunnel, and to determine the relative impact of certain modelling approaches (surface roughness, model scale, measurement techniques, etc.) on the quality of the simulations. The wind-tunnel results are compared with each other and with full-scale data and are shown in general to model the prototype flow very well. The effects of relaxing the criterion of aerodynamic roughness of the model surface were limited to certain regions in the lee of the hill and were linked to separation phenomena.  相似文献

In pelitic rocks, under conditions of low f O 2 and low f H 2 O, the stability of the mineral pair cordierite-garnet is limited by five univariant reactions. In sequence from high pressure and low temperature to high temperature and low pressure these are: cordierite+garnet hypersthene+sillimanite+quartz, cordierite+garnet hypersthene+sapphirine+quartz, cordierite+garnet hypersthene+spinel+quartz and cordierite+garnet olivine+spinel +quartz. In this sequence of reactions the Mg/Mg+Fe2+ ratio of all ferro-magnesian minerals involved decreases continuously from the first reaction to the fifth. The five univariant boundaries delimit a wide P-T range over which cordierite and garnet may coexist.Two divariant equilibria in which the Mg/Mg+ Fe2+ ratio of the coexisting phases are uniquely determined by pressure and temperature have been studied in detail. P-T-X grids for the reactions cordierite garnet+sillimanite+quartz and cordierite+hypersthene garnet+quartz are used to obtain pressure-temperature estimates for several high grade metamorphic areas. The results suggest temperatures of formation of 700–850° C and load pressures of 5–10 kb. In rare occasions temperatures of 950–1000° C appear to have been reached during granulite metamorphism.On the basis of melting experiments in pelitic compositions it is suggested that Ca-poor garnet xenocrysts found in calc-alkaline magmas derive from admixed pelitic rocks and did not equilibrate with the calc-alkaline magma.  相似文献
