ABSTRACT Stratigraphy presupposes a hierarchy of scales of spatial organization supplemented at the small‐scale end by sedimentological concepts (beds, bed sets and bed cosets) and, at larger spatial scales, by sequence‐stratigraphic concepts (systems tracts, parasequences, sequences). Between these two end‐members are intermediate‐scale bodies described as ‘lithofacies’, or simply ‘facies’. A more restricted concept, granulometric facies, can be described in terms of horizontal grain‐size gradients (‘facies change’) and cyclic vertical grain‐size gradients (‘stratification’). Assemblages of facies so defined (also called depositional systems) are not random, but occur in a limited suite of patterns. Such assemblages may be linked to two classes of bounding surfaces, a source diastem (the immediate source of the sediment) and a surface of closure (if preserved), between which is sandwiched a transgressive or regressive, basinward‐fining facies succession. Systems‐bounding surfaces are notably more continuous than internal (gradational) facies boundaries. By thus restricting the definition of a facies assemblage (depositional system), it is possible to describe the Quaternary of the Virginia coast with as few as 12 systems. Depositional systems in the Quaternary of the Virginia coast are allometric, in that any system can be derived from any other by plastic expansion of one or more facies relative to another, or by simple symmetry operations. Self‐similarity prevails across this intermediate scale of stratigraphic organization. Facies assemblages (depositional systems) consist of event beds, which themselves have erosional basal boundaries and internal successions of microfacies. At larger spatial scales, depositional systems are repeated, either autocyclic repetitions forced by processes within the basin of deposition or allocyclic repetitions, as ‘parasequences’ and high‐frequency sequences. In the Virginia Quaternary, systems architecture is compatible with sequence architecture and nests conformably within its framework, but analysis of systems architecture reveals rules beyond those governing sequence architecture. 相似文献

The liberation of development is the release of geographic research from the domination of the economic model. Much of human activity across the globe has been rendered marginal by the focus on economic growth as the only measure of development. Our inability to observe, record and analyze development that does not generate income has affected geographers' ability to contribute to the current discourse on the dichotomy between human progress and nature conservation. Economic development is only one of three forms of development: human, social and resource. It is dependent on the first two and must be considered a neutral factor in integrated development. The need for sustainable development requires a human-centered approach in development theory as one cannot be achieved without the other.Alternatives to the economic model have been motivated by political and or religious principal. This paper uses an umbrella term, One-World Development movement, to describe the many alternatives pursued globally. Three examples of the movement are explored: voluntary simplicity, alternative trading organizations and multiculturalism/liberation theology. One-dimensional radial models of the chemistry in cometary comae have been constructed for heliocentric distances ranging from 2 to 0.125 AU. The coma's opacity to solar radiation is included and photolytic reaction rates are calculated. A parent volatile mixture similar to that found in interstellar molecular clouds is assumed. Profiles through the coma of number density and column density are presented for H2O, OH, O, CN, C2, C3, CH, and NH2. A paleoenvironmental perspective of temperature change is paramount to understanding the significance of recent warming in the Arctic. Late Quaternary sediments from many arctic lakes provide environmental archives with decadal resolution, but reconstructions are hampered by the relative insensitivity of many traditional proxies to temperature. Here, we show that the δ18O of head capsules of chironomid larvae are equilibrated with the δ18O of lakewaters in which they live. In suitable lakes, lakewater δ18O is controlled by the δ18O of local precipitation, which is strongly correlated to mean annual air temperature (MAT). From this correlation, chironomid δ18O can be used to examine past changes in MAT. We illustrate the potential of this novel approach to paleothermometry with examples from two arctic lakes that reveal strong regional paleoclimatic gradients in the early Holocene. 相似文献

The fractionation of H isotopes between the water in the growth medium and the organically bonded H from microalgae cultured under conditions, where light intensity and wavelength, temperature, nutrient availability, and the H isotope ratio of the water were controlled, is reproducible and light dependant. All studies were based either on the H isotope ratios of the total organic H or on the lipids, where most of the H is firmly bonded to C. H bonded into other macromolecules, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids, does not exchange with water, when algae are incubated in water enriched with deuterium. Only after the destruction of quaternary H bonds are labile hydrogens in macromolecules free to exchange with water. By growing algae (18 strains), including blue-green algae, green algae and diatoms, in continuous light, the isotope fractionations in photosynthesis were reproducibly ?93 to ?178 %. depending on the organism tested. This fractionation was not temperature dependent. Microalgae grown in total darkness with an organic substrate did not show the isotope fractionation seen in cells grown in light. In both light- and dark-grown algae, however, additional depletion of deuterium (?30 to ?60%.) in cellular organic matter occurs during the metabolism of carbohydrates to form lipids. Plants from several natural populations also fractionated isotopes during photosynthesis by an average of ?90 to ?110%. In addition, the organically bonded H in nonsaponifiable lipids was further fractionated by ?80%. from that in saponifiable lipids, isolated from two geographically distinct populations of marsh plants. This difference between H isotope ratios of these two groups of lipids provides an endogenous isotopic marker. 相似文献

The Arctic climate is changing. Permafrost is warming, hydrological processes are changing and biological and social systems
are also evolving in response to these changing conditions. Knowing how the structure and function of arctic terrestrial ecosystems
are responding to recent and persistent climate change is paramount to understanding the future state of the Earth system
and how humans will need to adapt. Our holistic review presents a broad array of evidence that illustrates convincingly; the
Arctic is undergoing a system-wide response to an altered climatic state. New extreme and seasonal surface climatic conditions
are being experienced, a range of biophysical states and processes influenced by the threshold and phase change of freezing
point are being altered, hydrological and biogeochemical cycles are shifting, and more regularly human sub-systems are being
affected. Importantly, the patterns, magnitude and mechanisms of change have sometimes been unpredictable or difficult to
isolate due to compounding factors. In almost every discipline represented, we show how the biocomplexity of the Arctic system
has highlighted and challenged a paucity of integrated scientific knowledge, the lack of sustained observational and experimental
time series, and the technical and logistic constraints of researching the Arctic environment. This study supports ongoing
efforts to strengthen the interdisciplinarity of arctic system science and improve the coupling of large scale experimental
manipulation with sustained time series observations by incorporating and integrating novel technologies, remote sensing and

We characterize for the first time the presence of DDT and its metabolites in tropical Galapagos sea lions (Zalophus wolleabeki). ∑DDT concentrations in Galapagos sea lion pups sampled in 2005 and 2008 ranged from 16 to 3070 μg/kg lipid. Concentrations of ∑DDT in pups in 2008 averaged 525 μg/kg lipid and were 1.9 times higher than that (281 μg/kg lipid) detected in pups in 2005. These concentrations are lower than those reported in many pinnipeds elsewhere, comparable to those in Hawaiian monk seals, and higher than those in southern elephant seals. The health risk characterization showed that 1% of the male pups exceeded the p,p′-DDE toxic effect concentration associated with anti-androgenic effects reported in rats. The findings provide preliminary guidance on the relationship between DDT use and ecological impacts, serving as a reference point against which possible future impact of tropical DDT use can be assessed. 相似文献
