The goal of this study was to analyze the relation between the behaviour of a clayey material at the macroscopic scale and its microfabric evolution. This may lead to a better understanding of macroscopic strain mechanisms especially the contractancy and dilatancy phenomena. The approach proposed in this paper is based on the study of clay particles orientation by SEM picture analysis after different phases of triaxial loading. In the initial state of the samples (one‐dimensional compression), the SEM observations highlight a microstructural anisotropy with a preferential orientation of the particles normal to the loading direction. During isotropic loading, densification of the clayey matrix occurs related to a random orientation of particles indicated by the term ‘depolarization’. In the earlier stages of constant σ3 drained triaxial path on slightly overconsolidated specimens, the microstructural depolarization seems to persist inside a macroscopic domain, in which only the volumetric strains due to the isotropic part of the stress tensor evolve. Then, a rotation mechanism of the particles towards preferred directions seems to be activated. The phenomenon appears directly linked to the evolution of the deviatoric part of the stress tensor. The TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) satellite altimeter data from January 1, 1993to October 24, 1999 (cycles 11–261) was used for investigating
thelong-term variations in the geoidal geopotential W0 and/orin the geopotential scale factor R0 = GM/W0 (GM is theadopted geocentric gravitational constant). The mean valuesdetermined for the whole period covered are: W0 =(62 636 856.161 ± 0.002) m2 s-2, R0 =(6 363 672.5448 ± 0.0002) m. The actual accuracy is limited bythe altimeter calibration error (2–3 cm) and it isestimated
to be about ± 0.5 m2 s-2 (± 5 cm).The yearly variations of the above mean values are at the formalerror level. No long-term trend in W0, representing the oceanvolume change, was found for the seven years period 1993–9 on thebasis of T/P altimeter (AVISO) data.
No sea surface topography modelwas used in the solution.

The lack of temporal resolution and accurate chronology of Southern Ocean marine cores has hampered comparison of glacial millennial-scale oscillations between the Southern Ocean, Antarctic ice and other records from both hemispheres. In this study, glacial climate variability is investigated over the last 50 ka using a multi-proxy approach. A precise chrono-stratigraphy was developed on the high-sedimentation rate core MD94-103 (Indian Southern Ocean, 45°35′S 86°31′E, 3560 m water depth) by geomagnetic synchronization between the later core and NAPIS75, and 14C dates. High-resolution time-series of δ18O in planktonic foraminifera Globigerina bulloides and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) estimated from the alkenone UK′37 index and foraminifera assemblages have been generated. Temporal evolution of the two temperature proxy records is notably different during the last glacial period. While foraminifera data indicate a consistent cooling towards the last glacial maximum, anomalous warm glacial alkenone temperatures suggest a strong advection of warm “detrital” alkenones by surface waters of the Agulhas current. Superimposed to this general trend, during Heinrich events, foraminiferal SSTs point to warmer surface waters, while concurrent alkenone SSTs exhibit apparent coolings probably caused by enhanced local alkenone production. By analogy to modern observations, possible influence of ENSO-like conditions on the subantarctic Southern Ocean SSTs is discussed. 相似文献

We present the first results of an ongoing spectroscopic survey of galaxies selected in the rest frame ultraviolet (UV). The source catalogue has been constructed from a flux-limited sample of stars, galaxies and QSOs imaged at 2000 Å in Selected Area 57 with the FOCA balloon-borne imaging camera. Accurate positions for the UV sources have been obtained by matching with optical counterparts using APM scans of the Palomar Sky Survey limited at B 20.5. Here we present results derived from optical spectroscopy conducted with the WIYN telescope and the WHT for 142 faint sources. The redshift distribution for this UV-selected sample extends over 0 < z < 0.5, and a high fraction of the sources show intense nebular emission lines and UV–optical colours bluer than normal Hubble sequence galaxies. Such UV-selected surveys are thus a very efficient way to locate and study intermediate-redshift galaxies undergoing intense star formation. Although our sample is currently small, we derive a rest frame UV luminosity function with a steep faint-end slope consistent with that found for late-type galaxies in optical samples. However, the integrated luminosity density derived implies a volume-averaged star formation rate higher than other recent estimates, assuming a normal initial mass function. If representative of other UV fields, as suggested by UV number count studies, our data imply that the local abundance of star-forming galaxies may have been underestimated, and consequently claims for strong evolution in the global star formation rate in the range 0 < z < 1 overstated. An intensive study of a large UV-selected sample is likely to reveal important information on the declining population of star-forming galaxies of all types. 相似文献
