In the Bach Dang–Cam Estuary, northern Vietnam, mechanisms governing cohesive sediment aggregation were investigated in situ
in 2008–2009. As part of the Red River delta, this estuary exhibits a marked contrast in hydrological conditions between the
monsoon and dry seasons. The impact on flocculation processes was assessed by means of surveys of water discharge, suspended
particulate matter concentration and floc size distributions (FSDs) conducted during a tidal cycle at three selected sites
along the estuary. A method was developed for calculating the relative volume concentration for the modes of various size
classes from FSDs provided by the LISST 100X (Sequoia Scientific Inc.). It was found that all FSDs comprised four modes identified
as particles/flocculi, fine and coarse microflocs, and macroflocs. Under the influence of the instantaneous turbulent kinetic
energy, their proportions varied but without significant modification of their median diameters. In particular, when the turbulence
level corresponded to a Kolmogorov microscale of less than ∼235 μm, a major breakup of flocs resulted in the formation of
particles/flocculi and fine microflocs. Fluctuations in turbulence level were governed by seasonal variations in freshwater
discharge and by the tidal cycle. During the wet season, strong freshwater input induced a high turbulent energy level that
tended to generate sediment transfer from the coarser size classes (macroflocs, coarse microflocs) to finer ones (particles/flocculi
and fine microflocs), and to promote a transport of sediment seawards. During the dry season, the influence of tides predominated.
The turbulent energy level was then only episodically sufficiently high to generate transfer of sediment between floc size
classes. At low turbulent energy, modifications in the proportions of floc size classes were due to differential settling.
Tidal pumping produced a net upstream transport of sediment. Associated with the settling of sediment trapped in a near-bed
layer at low turbulent energy, this causes the silting up of the waterways leading to the harbour of Haiphong. 相似文献

We analyze the relationship between the dynamics of the coronal mass ejection (CME) of 15 May 2001 and the energy release in the associated flare. The flare took place behind the east limb and was disclosed by a growing system of hot soft X-ray (SXR) loops that appeared from behind the limb around the onset of the rapid acceleration of the CME. The highly correlated behavior of the SXR light-curve derivative and the time profile of the CME acceleration reveals an intrinsic relationship between the CME dynamics and the flare energy release. Furthermore, we found that the CME acceleration peak occurs simultaneously with the fastest growth (100 km s-1) of X-ray loops, indicating that the reconnection plays an essential role in the eruption. Inspecting the CME/flare morphology we recognized in the Yohkoh-SXT images an oval feature that formed within the rising structure at the onset of the rapid acceleration phase, simultaneously with the appearance of the X-ray loops. The eruptive prominence was imbedded within the lower half of the oval, suggestive of a flux-rope/prominence magnetic configuration. We interpret the observed morphological evolution in terms of a reconnection process in the current sheet that presumably formed below the erupting flux-rope at the onset of the CME acceleration. Measurements of the tip-height of the cusped X-ray loop system and the height of the lower edge of the oval, enable us to trace the stretching of the current sheet. The initial distance between the oval and the loops amounted to 35 – 40 Mm. In about 1 h the inferred length of the current sheet increased to 150 – 200 Mm, which corresponds to a mean elongation speed of 35 – 45 km s-1. The results are discussed in the framework of CME models that include the magnetic reconnection below the erupting flux-rope. 相似文献

We analyze the relationship between the acceleration of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and the energy release in associated
flares, employing a sample of 22 events in which the CME kinematics were measured from the pre-eruption stage up to the post-acceleration
phase. The data show a distinct correlation between the duration of the acceleration phase and the duration of the associated
soft X-ray (SXR) burst rise, whereas the CME peak acceleration and velocity are related to the SXR peak flux. In the majority
of events the acceleration started earlier than the SXR burst, and it is usually prolonged after the SXR burst maximum. In
about one half of the events the acceleration phase is very closely synchronized with the fastest growth of the SXR burst.
An additional one quarter of the events may be still considered as relatively well-synchronized, whereas in the remaining
quarter of the events there is a considerable mismatch. The results are interpreted in terms of the feedback relationship
between the CME dynamics and the reconnection process in the wake of the CME. 相似文献

Accurate determination of the tufa growth rate (TGR) is required to answer the fundamental geomorphological question of tufa evolution. The TGR has been measured by various direct and indirect methods. One of the most popular direct methods uses modified micro-erosion meter (MEM), which has several drawbacks. Here, we present for the first time a coordinate measuring macro-photogrammetry device (CMD) for monitoring the TGR in a contactless manner. The CMD was applied on 28 limestone plates at 14 locations within the Skradinski buk area, Croatia, and measurements were performed in the laboratory. The TGR was derived from digital tufa high-resolution models (DTHRMs). The accuracy of the device was evaluated using state-of-the-art three-dimensional (3D) scanners and error calculation at checkpoints. Moreover, the precision was evaluated with the split test (n = 5). A total of 74 DTHRMs with a spatial resolution of 0.0236 mm were created. The TGR ranged from 0.327 to 19.302 mm a−1, with an average of 5.771 mm a−1. A higher TGR was observed on the limestone plates near mosses, located in fast and turbulent water rather than in stagnant water. We found that specific micro-environmental factors (e.g. proximity to moss) positively affected tufa growth. Erosion events were observed, as well as the presence of aquatic insect larvae (Simuliidae and Chironomidae), which positively affected tufa growth. The CMD is a precise and accurate device that does not suffer from the drawbacks of the MEM method and has many other advantages. It has a high capability of tufa erosion detection, enables the identification of macroinvertebrates, and multispectral or hyperspectral cameras can be mounted on the device for spectral reflectance analysis of the tufa surface. The CMD can be applied in any study requiring a sub-millimetre data quality and involving the comparison of consecutive 3D models and derivation of various parameters of smaller objects. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Reclamation of peat bogs for agriculture changes the physical and chemical characteristics of the peat matrix, for example, drainage and tillage accelerate decomposition, altering peat porosity, pore size distribution, and hydraulic properties. This study investigated changes in near-saturated hydraulic conductivity over time after drainage of peat soil for agricultural use by conducting tension infiltrometer measurements in a mire that has been gradually drained and reclaimed for agriculture during the past 80 years (with fields drained 2, 12, 40, and 80 years before the measurements). At pore water pressure closest to saturation (pressure head −1 cm), hydraulic conductivity in the newest field was approximately nine times larger than that in the oldest field, and a decreasing trend with field age was observed. A similar (but weaker) trend was observed with −3 cm pressure head (approximately four times larger in the newest field in comparison to the oldest), but at −6 cm head, there were no significant differences. These results indicate that peat degradation reduces the amount of millimetre-sized pores in particular. They also indicate that changes in peat macroporosity continue for several decades before a new steady state is reached. 相似文献

The Cretaceous orogen of the Western Carpathians comprises fragments of the destructed northern Centrocarpathian domain, which
is defined as Infratatric unit and formed a continental margin facing the Penninic Ocean in Jurassic and Cretaceous times.
The breakup event and opening of the Penninic Ocean occurred in the Early Jurassic (Pliensbachian), which is recorded by an
abrupt deepening event from shallow-water sediments to deep-water nodular limestone in the Infratatric sediment succession.
The transformation of the passive into an active continental margin by the onset of subduction of the Penninic oceanic crust
occurred in Santonian times and is reflected by the beginning of flysch deposition in the Infratatric Belice domain, which
took the position of a forearc basin in the convergent margin setting. The forearc basin was supplied by clastic material
from the more internal part of the Infratatric unit, which experienced nappe stacking, metamorphism, and subsequent exhumation
in Late Cretaceous times. In the frontal part of the forearc basin an accretionary wedge was built up, which formed an outer-arc
ridge and delivered detrital material into the forearc basin in Maastrichtian time. Final collision between the European and
the Adriatic plate occurred in the Eocene period and is responsible for weak metamorphism in the Infratatric unit. 相似文献
