Although temporal variation in headwater stream chemistry has long been used to document baseline conditions and response to environmental drivers, less attention is paid to fine scale spatial variations that could yield clues to processes controlling stream water sources. We documented spatial and temporal variation in water composition in a headwater catchment (41 ha) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, USA. We sampled every 50 m along an ephemeral to perennial stream network as well as groundwater from seeps and 35 shallow wells across varying flow conditions. Groundwater influences on surface water in this region have not been considered to be important in past studies as relatively coarse soils were assumed to be well drained in steep catchments with flashy runoff response. However, seeps displayed perennial discharge, upslope accumulated areas (UAA) smaller than those for channel initiation sites and higher pH, Ca and Si concentrations than streams, suggesting relatively long groundwater residence time or long subsurface flow paths not bound by topographic divides. Coupled with a large range in groundwater chemistry seen in wells, these results suggest stream chemistry variation reflects the range of connectivity with, and quality of, groundwater controlled by hillslope hydropedological processes. The magnitude of variations of solute concentrations seen in the first order catchment was as broad as that seen at the fifth order Hubbard Brook Valley (3519 ha). Reduction in variation in solute concentrations with increasing UAA suggested a representative elementary area (REA) value of less than 3 ha in the first order catchment, compared with 100 ha for the fifth order basin. Thus, the REA is not necessarily an elementary catchment property. Rather, the partitioning of variation between highly variable upstream sources and relatively homogenous downstream characteristics may have different physical significance depending on the scale and complexity of the catchment under examination. Thin phytoplankton layers are common features in the coastal environment; however sampling these fine-scale optical features across broad horizontal scales remains a challenge. To investigate the horizontal spatial structure of thin phytoplankton layers, we performed an overnight survey in northern Monterey Bay, CA, USA using a SeaSciences Acrobat towed-vehicle. Physical and optical measurements were collected between the surface and near-bottom-depths along four parallel, across-shore transects. Three coherent chlorophyll features were observed: (1) a broad, sub-surface patch at the offshore end, (2) a near-surface patch at the nearshore end, and (3) a deep patch located between the nearshore and offshore patches. The offshore and nearshore patch were separated by a change in seafloor slope and a region of compressed, shoaling isopycnals. Both the offshore and nearshore features were located at the pycnocline, had similar optical properties, and were co-located with a low-salinity intrusion. The deep chlorophyll patch had associated physical and optical properties that were distinct from the patches at the pycnocline. The results from this study further underscore the heterogeneous horizontal spatial structure of thin layers and also add to the growing evidence suggesting that low-salinity intrusions may be strongly linked to the formation of thin phytoplankton layers over the northern shelf of Monterey Bay.  相似文献

The valley floor of a 33.9 km2 watershed in western Colorado experienced gradual sedimentation from before ∼ 6765 to ∼ 500 cal yr BP followed by deep incision, renewed aggradation, and secondary incision. In contrast, at least four terraces and widespread cut-and-fill architecture in the valley floor downstream indicate multiple episodes of incision and deposition occurred during the same time interval. The upper valley fill history is atypical compared to other drainages in the Colorado Plateau.One possible reason for these differences is that a bedrock canyon between the upper and lower valley prevented headward erosion from reaching the upper valley fill. Another possibility is that widespread, sand-rich, clay-poor lithologies in the upper drainage limited surface runoff and generally favored alluviation, whereas more clay-rich lithologies in the lower drainage resulted in increased surface runoff and more frequent incision. Twenty-two dates from valley fill charcoal indicate an approximate forest fire recurrence interval of several hundred years, similar to that from other studies in juniper-piñon woodlands. Results show that closely spaced vertical sampling of alluvium in headwater valleys where linkages between hillslope processes and fluvial activity are relatively direct can provide insight about the role of fires in alluvial chronologies of semi-arid watersheds.  相似文献

We report an optimized method for extracting neodymium (Nd) from fossil fish teeth with a single-stage column (125 µl stem volume; LN Resin, Eichrom Industries, Darien Illinois) for isotopic analysis by multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICMPS). Three reference materials (basalt: BCR-2, BHVO-2; phosphate: fossil bone composite) and splits of fossil fish teeth samples previously processed with existing two-stage column methods were processed using the single-stage column method. 143Nd/144Nd values of reference materials agree within error with published values, and the values for fish teeth correspond with sample splits processed with two-stage columns. Precision to ±  0.23 εNd was achieved for 30 ng Nd samples of reference materials, and Nd isotope measurements of fossil fish tooth sample replicates as small as 7 ng Nd were reproducible within long term instrumental uncertainty. We demonstrate the utility of the new method with the first high resolution Nd isotope record spanning the ~ 40.0 Ma middle Eocene Climatic Optimum, which shows an excursion of 0.65 εNd during the peak warming at the study site (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 119, Site 738; 30 kyr sample spacing from 40.3 to 39.6 Ma). LN Resin is already used in standard methods for separating Nd, and Nd isotopes are routinely measured by MC-ICPMS with high efficiency inlet systems. Our innovation is a single, small volume LN Resin column for Nd separation. The streamlined approach results in a 10× increase in sample throughput.  相似文献

Our specimen of the cultured Emiliania huxleyi strain (CCMP1742, also known as NEPCC55a) that provides the benchmark for -based paleothermometry has started producing, for reasons yet unclear, major amounts of three new alkenones identified as ω15,22-C35 methyl ketone, ω15,22-C36 ethyl ketone and ω16,23-C36 methyl ketone. Comparison of these structures with those established now by the same OsO4 derivatization method applied to the di-unsaturated C37, C38 and C39 alkenones typically found in this organism provides insight into the possible pathway for their biosynthesis. Isothermal batch culture experiments also show the content and composition of these new compounds change systematically and quite significantly in cells when subjected to environmental conditions such as nutrient depletion, variation in light availability and prolonged darkness. Alkenones of similarly unusual short-chain length are evident in suspended particulate materials from present day surface waters in the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean) and in two different Holocene time horizons (Unit I and Unit II deposits) in Black Sea sediments. However, the positions of the double bonds are different from those that we now report in our culture, implying a different biosynthetic sequence. These alkenones are most likely derived from another, as yet unknown, haptophyte species. If this other organism accounts for all documented occurrences of these compounds in natural samples, then either it has a capacity for growth over a remarkably wide salinity range or surface water salinity in the early Holocene Black Sea may not have been as low as is currently believed.  相似文献

The application of magnetic particle technology to environmental remediation has tended to focus, up to now, upon the removal of oil contamination from plumage and fur. The present research demonstrates the potential of this technology to remove oil contamination from the surface of rock. Specifically, a single treatment has been demonstrated to remove more than 80% by weight of heavy bunker oil from the surface of a common foreshore rock type. A further three treatments have been shown to result in an optimum removal of up to 94% by weight. The results are highly reproducible and offer the possibility of achieving up to 100% removal with the appropriate use of pre-conditioners.  相似文献

Top predators in the marine environment integrate chemical signals acquired from their prey that reflect both the species consumed and the regions from which the prey were taken. These chemical tracers-stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen; persistent organic pollutant (POP) concentrations, patterns and ratios; and fatty acid profiles-were measured in blubber biopsy samples from North Pacific killer whales (Orcinus orca) (n=84) and were used to provide further insight into their diet, particularly for the offshore group, about which little dietary information is available. The offshore killer whales were shown to consume prey species that were distinctly different from those of sympatric resident and transient killer whales. In addition, it was confirmed that the offshores forage as far south as California. Thus, these results provide evidence that the offshores belong to a third killer whale ecotype. Resident killer whale populations showed a gradient in stable isotope profiles from west (central Aleutians) to east (Gulf of Alaska) that, in part, can be attributed to a shift from off-shelf to continental shelf-based prey. Finally, stable isotope ratio results, supported by field observations, showed that the diet in spring and summer of eastern Aleutian Island transient killer whales is apparently not composed exclusively of Steller sea lions.  相似文献

Microbial mat communities host complex biogeochemical processes and play a role in the formation of most carbonate rocks by influencing both carbonate precipitation and dissolution. In this study, the biogeochemistry of microbial mats from the hypersaline Salt Pond, San Salvador, Bahamas are described using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, microelectrode profiling, fatty acid methyl esters, and carbon and nitrogen analyses. These microbial mats are distinctly layered both chemically and with regard to composition of microbial community, where significant (?? < 0.05) differences are noted between layers and cores. Furthermore, an oxic upper zone and an H2S-rich lower zone dominate the Salt Pond microbial mats, where H2S concentrations were measured approaching 8 mM. The high H2S concentrations along with the lacking evidence of mineral precipitation in SEM images point to the prevalence of carbonate dissolution. Moreover, the high concentrations of organics (3?C9%) reveal that the mats are self-sourcing and can provide ample fuel to sustain the highly active heterotrophic (both aerobic and anaerobic) metabolism. Seasonal differences in sulfide and oxygen concentrations in Salt Pond mats indicate that the carbonate dissolution and precipitation reactions are dynamic in this hypersaline lake.  相似文献

Massive blooms of the harmful alga Cochlodinium polykrikoides Margalef occurred in the lower Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries during the summers of 2007 and 2008. The Lafayette and Elizabeth Rivers appeared to act as initiation grounds for these blooms during both years. However, in 2008 there were also localized sites of initiation and growth of populations within the mesohaline portion of the James River. Bloom initiation appeared to be correlated with intense, highly localized rainfall events during neap tides. Subsequent spring tides increased tidal flushing and transport of C. polykrikoides from the Lafayette and Elizabeth Rivers into the lower James River where it was transported upriver by local estuarine circulation. Blooms dissipated in response to increased wind-driven mixing associated with frontal systems moving through the region. A combination of physical factors including, seasonal rainfall patterns, increased stratification, nutrient loading, spring-neap tidal modulation, and complex estuarine mixing and circulation allowed C. polykrikoides to spread and form massive blooms over large portions of the tidal James River and the lower Chesapeake Bay.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents the cartographic outcome of a 3-year collaboration with Penobscot Nation Cultural & Historic Preservation to map the traditional place names of Penobscot territory in the state of Maine. After a consideration of the challenges of mapping Indigenous place names, I describe my cartographic contribution to the project, to transform the map design using the tools of narrativity and translation. Initial insights about Penobscot place names then led to wider insights regarding Indigenous place names and traditional cartography, through a comparison to similar practices in the place name traditions of other communities. I then explain how these insights influenced the design of the map itself.  相似文献
