We assessed leaf breakdown of five native riparian species from Brazilian Cerrado (Myrcia guyanensis, Ocotea sp., Miconia chartacea, Protium brasiliense, and Protium heptaphyllum), incubated in single and mixed species packs in two headwater streams with different physico-chemical properties in the Espinhaço Mountain range (Southeastern Brazil). Leaves were placed in plastic litter bags (15 cm×20 cm, 10 mm mesh size) and the experiments were carried out during the dry seasons of 2003 and 2004. Leaf nitrogen and phosphorus contents were similar in all species, but polyphenolic contents were different (P<0.001). M. guyanensis showed higher polyphenolics content (8.48% g−1 dry mass) and leaf toughness. Individually, higher breakdown rates were found in M. guyanensis at Indaiá stream (k=0.0063±0.0005 d−1) and in Ocotea sp. at Garcia stream (k=0.0088±0.0006 d−1). However, P. brasiliense and P. heptaphyllum showed lower breakdown rates at Indaiá and Garcia streams (Indaiá: k=0.0020±0.0002 and 0.0019±0.0001 d−1; Garcia: k=0.0042±0.0001 and 0.0040±0.0002 d−1). Single and mixed breakdown processes of each species were not statistically different on both streams. However, all species showed higher breakdown rates at Garcia stream (P<0.01). These results suggest that leaf breakdown is not altered when litter benthic patches are composed by a mixture of species in the same proportions that they occur on riparian leaf falls.  相似文献

Several previous studies have recognized paleochannels as the most typical geomorphologic features imprinted in the modern landscape of Marajó Island, northern Brazil. A characterization of these paleochannels by detailed mapping has not yet been accomplished, despite their great potential for helping reconstructing the succession of events responsible for the origin and evolution of the drainage system at the mouth of the Amazon River during the Quaternary. The present study aims to provide a detailed mapping and characterization of these paleochannels using remote sensing (i.e., SRTM, Landsat 5-TM, and Landsat 7-ETM+), integrated with sedimentological and radiocarbon data obtained from outcrops and cores. The mapped paleochannels allowed for the first time correlation of the channel-like morphologies with fining-upward sedimentary successions, typical of channel deposits. The study focuses on the Lake Arari area located in the northeast of Marajó Island, where a complex fluvial network dominated by a funnel-shaped structure attributed to a Late Pleistocene paleoestuarine system was recognized. The inner estuary was connected to three fluvial channels that ran from the east-southeast throughout an area currently occupied by Marajó Bay, implying that this bay did not exist when the estuarine system was active. Separation of the eastern side of Marajó Island due to tectonic causes related to capture of Tocantins River by northeastward-orientated faults would have interrupted the fluvial inflow, ultimately causing the abandonment of the estuarine system. Today, the central part of the funnel-shaped structure related to the Late Pleistocene paleoestuary is occupied by Lake Arari, where sediments started to accumulate no earlier than the mid-Holocene. It is proposed that this lake might have developed from the Late Pleistocene estuary as the fluvial inflow was cut off during the detachment of Marajó Island. Marajó Island serves as an example of a very dynamic site of changing landscapes throughout the Quaternary as a result of tectonic activity.  相似文献

Summary. A swarm of earthquakes occurred in the Kintail area of NW Scotland in 1974 August with magnitudes up to ML = 4.6 and reported intensities up to VI MM. One earthquake of the series was recorded by about 60 temporary stations of the LISPB refraction experiment in addition to the permanent LOWNET network. This allowed the determination of an accurate epicentre for that event which was then used as a control event to locate other earthquakes of the Kintail series. The events of that swarm had a strikeslip focal mechanism and seemed to be associated with the Strathconon Fault.  相似文献

The Late Pleistocene and Holocene loess deposits of the SE Buenos Aires province are composed of four allostratigraphic units that represent four episodes of loess deposition. The first and the second episodes occurred in Late Pleistocene times. The second episode was followed by a soil forming interval (Early Holocene to Mid-Holocene times). The third episode took place at about 5000 yr BP, after the Holocene sea-level maximum when marine regression began. The fourth episode constitutes a historical event of only local significance.Loess shows a fairly constant granulometric and mineralogical composition. The modal fraction consists of very fine sand and coarse silt (3 to 5 phi). They are classified as sandy silts or silty sands. Three grain-size subpopulations are differentiated: coarse, medium and fine. The medium-size subpopulation, which is the most important, consists of most of the very fine sand and coarse silt. It is thought to be transported by modified saltation and short-term suspension during local dust-storms.The mineralogical composition of loess consists of a volcaniclastic assemblage derived mainly from reworked pyroclastic deposits, primary tephras and volcaniclastic sediments. The source area of these materials was located in the lower Colorado river valley about 400 km SW of the studied area. There was also a direct supply by volcanic ash falls.  相似文献

The concentration of anionic detergents, polyphosphates, ammonia, seston and dissolved oxygen have been determined in a small bay near the principal sewage discharge of the city of Rio Grande. The results show great variations in the concentrations, as a function of the time of the day. The highest concentrations in anionic detergents were observed between 09.00 and 10.00 in the morning, and from 18.00 to 21.00. The other parameters present an erratic distribution, except the dissolved oxygen, showing a net increase in the second half of the sampling period.  相似文献

Several hybrid neutral atmosphere delay models have been developed at the University of New Brunswick. In this paper we are presenting UNB3m_pack, a package with subroutines in FORTRAN and corresponding functions in MatLab which provides neutral atmospheric information estimated using the UNB3m model. The main goal of UNB3m is to provide reliable predicted neutral atmosphere delays for users of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and other transatmospheric radiometric techniques. Slant neutral atmosphere delays are the main output of the package, however, it can be used to estimate zenith delays, Niell mapping functions values, delay rates, mapping function rates, station pressure, temperature, relative humidity and the mean temperature of water vapor in the atmospheric column. The subroutines work using day of year, latitude, height and elevation angle as input values. The files of the package have a commented section at the beginning, explaining how the subroutines work and what the input and output parameters are. The subroutines are self-contained, i.e., they do not need any auxiliary files. The user has simply to add to his/her software one or more of the available files and call them in the appropriate way. The GPS Tool Box is a column dedicated to highlighting algorithms and source code utilized by GPS engineers and scientists. The Hurst phenomenon is a well-known feature of long-range persistence first observed in hydrological and geophysical time series by E. Hurst in the 1950s. It has also been found in several cases in turbulence time series measured in the wind tunnel, the atmosphere, and in rivers. Here, we conduct a systematic investigation of the value of the Hurst coefficient H in atmospheric surface-layer data, and its impact on the estimation of random errors. We show that usually \(H > 0.5\), which implies the non-existence (in the statistical sense) of the integral time scale. Since the integral time scale is present in the Lumley–Panofsky equation for the estimation of random errors, this has important practical consequences. We estimated H in two principal ways: (1) with an extension of the recently proposed filtering method to estimate the random error (\(H_p\)), and (2) with the classical rescaled range introduced by Hurst (\(H_R\)). Other estimators were tried but were found less able to capture the statistical behaviour of the large scales of turbulence. Using data from three micrometeorological campaigns we found that both first- and second-order turbulence statistics display the Hurst phenomenon. Usually, \(H_R\) is larger than \(H_p\) for the same dataset, raising the question that one, or even both, of these estimators, may be biased. For the relative error, we found that the errors estimated with the approach adopted by us, that we call the relaxed filtering method, and that takes into account the occurrence of the Hurst phenomenon, are larger than both the filtering method and the classical Lumley–Panofsky estimates. Finally, we found that there is no apparent relationship between H and the Obukhov stability parameter. The relative errors, however, do show stability dependence, particularly in the case of the error of the kinematic momentum flux in unstable conditions, and that of the kinematic sensible heat flux in stable conditions.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates the predictive capabilities of a numerical model based on continuum mechanics for the simulation of run-out processes during landslides. It assesses a particle-based method that takes advantage of a double Lagrangian-Eulerian discretization and known as the material point method (MPM). Attention is given to the post-failure behaviour and, in particular, to the computation of important quantities such as run-out distance, maximum velocity and energy release. The MPM is a step forward in computational solid mechanics and has the potential to simulate large deformations such as those occurring during landslides. A validation is conducted based on simulations of two case studies of different scales, namely the Tokai-Hokuriku expressway failure in Japan and the Vajont landslide in Italy. The results show a very good agreement with field and other numerical observations.  相似文献

A predictive model for impact assessment of shrimp (Farfantepenaeus paulensis) culture in pen enclosures was developed. Experiments were carried out at Saco da Mangueira, a small embayment at the Patos Lagoon estuarine area (southern Brazil). Nitrogen budget was assessed considering inputs and outputs from the culture system. The measured parameters were water flow, shrimp density, pen mesh size and clogging effect, artificial diet quality, and food conversion rates. Shrimp excretion was estimated from literature available. A N-NT concentration of 0.07 mg L−1 of was assumed as a conservative critical reference value to assess environmental impact and water deterioration. Trials showed that for Saco da Mangueira conditions, a total number of 70 pen enclosures of 0.3 ha (i.e., a total production of 32.2 ton) is recommended as a maximal number. This model is a useful tool for impact assessment and coastal management and may be applied to other estuarine areas.  相似文献
